Howell went on to say that between acts, they were trying to get sound checks without letting the audience know that. A sound check is testing audio levels for both in struments ' and vocalists to make sure everything biends correctly. She turned the crowd on with her gutsy ver- sion of "What You Won't Do For Love." " The night's other bright spot was Donald Byrd, who can do no wrong when he belts music from his silver trumpet. And then there was Patrice. Energy and stamina per sonified. She brought the whole thing together; At tributing her bftundless energy to her daily three-mile jogs, and her vegetarian diet, Ms. Rushen saysr "When you feel your best, chances are you will react accordingly, and that's crucial when you're on tour for several months straight." This has been a busy year for the 27-year-old musician and vocalist who started her show business career when she was five years old. Many of her stops during the past six' weeks have been college cam puses. According to Ms. Rushen' tour manager, William Cope, the star's ability to easily relate to college audiences is one of the reasons that so many have been on this latest tour. "In the future," he said, she' may consider doing college seminars. She is very in telligent and articulate." ' .-. But on a more practical . side, Cope concedes, the whole thing is a matter of . money. - "We need to do about four gigs (shows) a week just to pay everybody," he said. "It's just plain economics." And while the economics of performing is certainly a cen tral issue, for Ms. , Rushen, who was declared a child pro digy before she started school, the bottom line is just a little different. ; She loves it! The love affair with the piano when , a preschool teacher noticed Patrice's gift for music and suggested she be enrolled in a special program for musically gifted children at the University . of s Southern California. First, she studied musical theory, and two years later when she was five she was introduced to the piano. It was love at first note. Now, Patrice calls the piano "my life." "I got my very first piano when I was five years old," she said. "My parents got it for me so that I could practice at home. We have a very small house and that piano prac tically took up the entire living room." It all paid off about ten years ago, when Patrice signed a professional contract with Prestige Records, a division of the Fantasy label and predominantly a jazz recor ding company. r It's all been uphill since. Friday night was a good ex ample. Ms. Rushen gave the crowd of about 1000 people, mostly students, a good show, even when it came to rapping with the audience while her drummer went off stage to get it together. , , ,, s, Ws- J . 0 4.J 4t IB I y i " What Time Is It?'.! says 21 year old Morris Day of the groups The Time.
