CHARLOTTE Virginia Union held off a "stubborn North Carolina Central team and won its second straight CIAA ' crown with a 33-26 vic- tory over the Eagles. The Southern .Division Champion Virginia Union Panthers (8-2) 1 face North Dakota State Saturday in the NCAA Division ;II , playoff in' Fargo, N.D. They rack ed up 248 yards rushing and passed for another 104 as the Panthers avenged an earlier 27-26 loss to Central. The Eagles were to get record setting perfor mances from Gerald Fraylon and Victor Hunter but it wasn't enough to offset the crunching rushing of the Big Red Machine. Sophomore quarter back John Johnson rush ed for one touchdown and threw for another as the Panthers bolted to a 14-0 lead after 16 minutes of play. Central got on the scoreboard at 11:30 of the second period when sophomore quarterback Gerald Fraylon threw an 8 yard pass to senior receiver Victor Hunter. He rushed another 166 times for .255 yards thus setting a season mark for total of fense plays of 400. He 1745 for another season mark. Benny Tate, who set out the championship game with an jnjury, became only the second NCCU back to reach the 1000 mark when he ac cumulated 1036 on a school record 236 car ries. He had earlier set game marks for rushes (42 against Morgan) and rushing yards (215 vs. Bowie). Benny Tate, and Hunter: Sam Washington, the All-CIAA guard, was a second team All-District selectee.
