September-October Governor Hunt appointed a Commission on the Future of North Carolina to direct NC 2000 and to prepare a report of recommended actions. Also appointed were NQ 2000 county chairmen to promote and coordinate citizen participation at the local level. .October 22 The Commission on, the Future met for the first time and organized its work into four theme areas: People, Natural Resources, Community and Economy. County chairmen also met and discussed ways of building citizen interest and participation. November-March, 1982 , The Commission studied trends and projections; identified major areas Of concern for the future; and began to. solicit information and ideas from individuals and groups across the state. County chairmen and their steering committees conducted county "kick-off" meetings. In total, almost 10,000 local Readers participated in discussions on local and state concerns for the future. In March, Governor Hunt, the Commission and county committees jointly sponsored a NC 2000 questionaire, -which asked citizens about their goals for the future of the state. It also gave them the op portunity to say what they like about North Carolina and what they think needs to be improved in the futyre. Over. 1 12,000 questionnaires were completed and returned. April-June j" The Commission reviewed more than 75 technical papers from resource people in state agencies and oolleges and universities, as well as papers from public interest and business groups. Based on their fin dings, the Commission began to draft goals statements and to discuss possible recommendations. In the counties, a second rouniNof meetings directly involved thousands of North Carolinians in discussions about the future as NC 2000 committee members met with local civic, business, religious, and public interest groups. July 13-14 NC 2000.coutj.leaders met in Chapel Hill to discuss common concerns for the future and regional differences. A report on the local perspective on the future is being prepared and will be presented to the Commission in August. July 22 Governor Hunt and Commission Chairman William C.
