Sharpen those nebulous neurons with another thought-provoking season of NOVA, premiering with "The NOVA Quiz" on Tuesday, October 5, at 8 p.m. on PBS (WUNC locally). "The NOVA Quiz" gives viewers a chance to join some of NOVA’s most ardent fans to test their wits over general science questions. (Classical languages not required.) Among the contestants, who were selected from a cross-section of NOVA N'iewers from airound the country, are a graphic artist, a high school principal, an event planner and a cattle rancher. Their broad science knowledge proves that science education is alive .ind well in front of the TV screen on Tuesday nights. Later in the season, science fan Bill Cosby joins the 20th anniversary celebration when he hosts "Great Moments from NOVA," a 90-minute feast of unforgettable footage from exploding volcanoes to "singing" chimps airing Tuesday, December 7 at 8 p.m. In early 1994, NOVA goes back to basics in a big way with "Human Origins" (working title), a three-part special on the evolutionary lineage of the hum^n species, hosted by noted anthropologist Don Johanson. "Human Origins" airs on three successive nights: Monday, February 28: Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, at 8 p.m. Other offerings during the 20th anniversary include desperadoes, psychics, medical miracles, thrills, spills, and dinosaurs! On Tuesday, October 12 at 8 p.m., viewers may think they’ve tuned-in to a horse opera. Nope. It’s Clyde Snow, the forensic cowboy, hot on the trail of the mortal remains of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, on "Wanted: Butch and Sundance." On Tuesday, October 19 at 8 p.m., a detective of a different sort-magician James "The Amazing" Randi-sleuths the truth behind claims of paranormal powers on "Secrets of the Psychics." On Tuesday, October 26 at 8 p.m., three people with terminal lung disease await the most complex of all organ transplants, a new lung, on "Dying to Breathe." On Tuesday, November 2 at 8 p.m., the magnificent, endangered condor soars over California, where it is rapidly disappearing, and over the Andes, where it thankfully still flourishes, on "Shadow of the Cord or." On Tuesday, November 9 at 8 p.m., the movie "Jurassic Park" gets peer reviewed as experts try to figure out how dinosaurs could be brought back to life, on "The Real Jurassic Park." On Tuesday, November 16 at 8 p.m., viewers go for the ride of their lives ^ they explore the science in which Newtonian mechanics and primal fear overlap, on "Roller Coaster!" On Tuesday, November 30 at 8 p.m., investigators puzzle over the wreckage of a passenger jet that inexplicably went down in Panama, on "Mysterious Crash of Flight 201." On Tuesday, December 21 at 8 p.m., the late teacher, genius and eccentric physicist Richard Feynman is profiled, on "The Best Mind Since Einstein." On Tuesday, December 28 at 8 p.m., viewers meet two men with a puzzling condition, called visual agnosia, which prevents them from recognizing faces and familiar objects, on "Stranger in the Mirror." In 1994, NOVA will air programs on dinosaurs in China, cryptography, experimental aircraft, hit Kilimanjaro aircraft carriers and the scourge of tobacco smoking in China. Last year, NOVA garnered several major broadcast and film awards including two Emmys (for "Suicide Mission to Chernobyl" and "The Russian Right Stuff," an AAAS Westinghouse Science Journalism Award (for Eclipse of the Century) and an American Heart Associaiion Howard W. Blakcslee Award (for "Avoiding the Surgeon’s Knirc"j. Earlier this year, the WGBH Science Unit, which' produces NOVA, was honored with an Ohio State Award and a George Foster Peabody Award for the mini-series "The Machine That Changed the World." MacKeihan said it took the better part of the century for Southern women writers to find the will to tell their own stories, and to say to those who would dominate them, "I am not who you say I She believes that William Faulkner’s portrayal of fragile and weak-minded Southern women is no longer an appropriate literary model. Instead, she presents Lee Smith’s "Fair and Tender Ladies" and Alice Walker’s "The Color Purple" as examples of contemporary Southern writers whose characters honor their roots, lay claim to the future, and find new ways to voice the Southern woman’s experience. "Daughters of Time" is being used as a textbook supplement by a public school system in Texas and at the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy to highlight the literary and historic' contributions of Southern women writers. MacKethan is serving as ? consultant for a National Public Radio play that is based on her account of Harriet Jacobs, stories. The program, scheduled to air in the fall, is supported by the North Carolina Humanities Council.
