James’ Com mander Adam Dalgliesh (Roy Marsden) and Inspector Morse (John Thaw). Marten fans are having their turn now, as he stars in the current "Unruttural Causes," concluding this week, and then ap pears with Jeremy Brett in "Sherlock Holmes: The Last Vampyre," a two-part adventure set to begin Jan. 27. But Morse fans, have no fear, the beer-drink ing, opera-loving Oxford detective returns with four new cases, begin ning Feb. 24. LeMay, who starred in the “Friday the 13th” TV show, and Allison Smith (“Kate & Allie”) appear. ** {R and unrated versions: ASyP,GV) “SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH" (Triboro, $89.95): Elizabeth Taylor and Marie Harmon have two of the theater’s most classic roles in this version of the Tennessee Williams play, directed by feature-filmmaker Nicolas Roeg (“The Man Who Fell to Earth’ ’) and originally televised by me in 1991, It examines the late- 195^i«lationship between a fading movie star and a charming schemer, Valerie Petrine co-stars. *** (R: AS, P) “LAST LIGHT" (Vidmark, $92.95): Kiefer Sutherland makes his directorial debut with this drama, originally shown on Showtime, in which he dso stars as a death-rdW inmate awaifll^^xecution. Forest Whitaker—an actor-tumed-director himself, via the recent “Strapped” — plays a guard with whom the con- Hiift matches wits; Amanda Plummer also is featured. *** (R: AS, P, V) “BLOODFIST V: HUMAN TAR GET" (New Horizons, $91.50): Kickboxing star Don “The Dragon” Wilson leaps into action again in this adventure, the latest installment in one of the genre's longest-running franchises. Here, he plays an FBI agent whose efforts to smash an inter national arms operation leaves him near death after an ambush ... and though he survives, both sides of the law want to eliminate him. ** (R: AS, P,V) HELD OVER: “HOT SHOTS! PART DEUX" {Fo\, $96.83): Those who enjoyed the initial spoof are bound to get a big kick out of its equally funny sequel, which trades in “Top Gun” for the “Rambo” series as its main target of parody ..: with' Ricl^dCreniueyenshowinguphere.' ■ ■ . Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) is en listed fora rescue mission, with Lloyd Bridges making a zany U.S. presi dent; Valeria Golino also returns. *** {PG-13: A5. P, V) “HOCUS POCUS" (Disney, $96.03): Bette Midler turns witchy —‘ literally, along with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy (“Sister Act”)—in this comedy-fantasy about three sorceresses accidentally revived to wreak havoc in present-day Salem, Mass. It’s then up to three youngsters (Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Vinessa Shaw) and a rather unusual cat to send them back to their proper 17th- century place. ** (PG: P, V) “TRUE ROMANCE" (Warner, $95.45); Written by “Reservoir Dogs” filmmakerQuentin Tarantino, this melodrama’s title is somewhat misleading ... since the love story unfolds amid a hail of violence, as a young couple (Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette) flees an odd assort ment of very colorful characters. Among the latter are Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman and Chris topher Walken. *** (R and unrated versions: AS, N, P, GV) “BOUND AND GAGGED: A LOVE STORY" (Triboro, $89.95): Sort of a twist on ‘ ‘Three of Hearts,” this offbeat comedy casts Ginger Lynn Allen and Elizabeth Sallarelli as women who shared a close relation ship. The latter lady arranges the kid napping of the former and the subse quent trail leads them into danger; Chris Denton plays their fellow trav eler and Karen Black also appears. ** (Not rated: AS, P, V) COMING SOON: “CONEHEADS" (Paramount, Jan. 26): Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin reprise their “Saturday Night Live” roles as aliens who consume “mass quantities.” (PG) ‘ HARD TARGET’' (MCA/Univer- sal, Jan. 26): Jean-Clau(je Van Damme stars in the violent action-drama, di rected by Hong Kong’s John Woo (“The Killer”). (R) ‘ ‘KALIFORNIA'' (PolyGram, Jan. 26): Juliette Lewis and Brad Pitt play young lovers who carve a path of cross-country terror. (R and unrated versions) ‘ ‘LASTACTION HERO ’ ’ (Colum bia/Tri-Star, Jan. 26): Arnold Schwarzenegger’s film, bound to have a longer life on tape than in theaters, hits video. This comes under the heading of trivia, but I’ll tell you anyway. 'Dead on Time ’ is the first one and the actress is Joanna David. She was in ‘R^h^cca, ’playingJeremy Brett’s wife. In ‘Happy Families ’ is Anna Massey, who played Mrs. Danvers in ‘Rebecca ’ and is Jeremy Brett’s real ex-wife. ‘Who Killed Harry Field? ’ has Geraldine James from ‘The Jewel in the Crown ’ and ‘She's BeenAway.' ‘GreeksBearingGifts’ has James Faulkner, who you will remember from ‘Devices and De sires ' and ‘The Blackheath Poison ings.' I like him a lot; he’s a smoothie. For those in the audience who have been devotees, these ac tors crop up.” If it sounds like Eaton (who also is the executive producer of ‘ ‘Masterpiece Theatre ’ ’) enjoys her job, there’s a reason for that: “Wouldn’t you like this job? Taylor found evidence that put her on the baby’s trail. Opal was thrilled to see Palmer and Dixie rec oncile their differences. Hayley and Charlie, whose relationship began heating up again, learned about Alec’s ex-girlfriend, Janine, from Alec’s parents. Alec became suspicious when questioned by Adam about Hayley and Charlie’s investigation. Coming: Tad questions Brooke’s condition. Another World: Cass found Kyle’s body at KBAY, and Ryan questioned the likely suspects. Inter est focused on Donna when Ryan and Vicky caught her in a lie about her whereabouts on the date in question. Meanwhile, Loma packed her suit case and left her apartment. Paulina and Jake were thrown together while searching for Rachel in New York. Kelsey grew uncomfortable when John began talking about having a child with her. Coming: Grant makes further inroads. As The World Turns: Holden res cued Lily from a snowdrift and brought her back to the farmhouse, leading to further conflict with Damian. Duncan was astounded to see Shannon, alive, at the airport. After Craig unearthed a con artist posing as Royce’s twin, he went to Chicago to meet the real twin, but had no idea that Sam Markham is a woman. As Emily was telling Cal that Connor never slept with Line, Connor began to miscany. Coming: Lily gets angrier with Damian. Bold & Beautiful: Despite her self, Macy ended up having a good time with Anthony at a dinner party given by Karen and Connor. Brooke acted understanding when Ridge re sisted her charms, aware that Taylor was about to return home. Taylor helped Damon to understand why he shouldn’t blame James for Mary’s death, as father and son reconciled. Coming: A difficult homecoming. Days Of Our Lives: Tony acted understanding when Kristen couldn’t . make love to him, unaware she was recalling moments with John. Stefano decided to verify the information he discovered in Sami’s diary before using it to destroy John and the Bradys. Kate recognized Vivian as having been at the party. When the hospital nurse found Vivian in Laura’s room, they sedated her, causing Vivian to , bpcome catatonic. Coming: Bo fol- , lows a strong lead. ! General Hospital: As Kevin at tempted to get a job at General |Iospi- tal, Ryan faked a psychotic episode in reaction to Felicia’s wedding an nouncement. Bobbie’s flirtation with Damian sparked a jealous confronta tion with Tony. Lois came to the wrong conclusion when she called Ned but Brenda picked up the phone. Karen was thrilled by Jagger’s sin cere offer. Despite Edward and Ned’s attempt to blackmail him away from ELQ, Damian refused to give in. Com ing: Ned has some explaining to do. Guiding Light: Josh saved Tangie from the burning lighthouse. Alan- Michael and Gilly were stunned when Alexandra gave Nick and Mindy half of WSPR. Vanessa heard Billy lie to the police and challenged him about it. When Roger demanded that Billy give him Peter, they fought and Roger’s gun went off. Later, as Holly was getting pills from the hospital for a feverish Roger, she was caught by Eve. Nick accepted Alexandra’s of fer to move into the Spaulding man sion with Mindy, having in mind a plan of his own. Coming: Eve grills a resistant Holly. Loving: Steffi turned to food after finding confirmation of Casey’s love for Ally in his journal. Clay acted protectively toward Steffi and brought her to a hotel to get away from her mother and Casey, causing some raised eyebrows. Ava ended her en gagement to Alex upon learning he’s still married. Buck pressured Curtis into taking him on as a partner at the Rodeo Bar, then, desperate for money, called a loan shark. Coming: Steffi reaches out for approval. One Life To Live: Viki and Sloan found Dorian’s confession to murder. Blair told Dorian about Viki and Sloan’s quest for the truth. Ethel Crawford, Victor Lord’s former nurse, called Dorian, a conversation over heard from a phone tap by Viki and Sloan. Suede was killecl saving Marty from Todd. As the police closed in, Todd took Rebecca hostage, fleeing with her in a getaway car. Ty, rejected by Alex, opted to return to the Moody farm. Coming: Rebecca pleads for her life. Young & Restless: Victor asked Nikki to stay away from Hope, and from him, since their relationship is over. Victor then became Hope’s first lover. Later, Nikki phoned Victor to inform him of Victoria’s marriage to Cole. John, feeling his mortality, urged Jill to find someone her own age to love should anything happen to him.
