THE CAROLINA TIMES—SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, 1994 North State Officers Go Beyond ‘The Call of Duty’ SPECIAL GUESTS - WIVES OF FALLEN POLICET OFFICERS (L-R) MRS. ARNETTA W. BARNES (Joseph W. Barnes) MRS. LEROY RUFFIN, JR. (Leroy Ruffin, Jr.) MRS. OVELIA D. BARNES (Walter Barnes) (Photo by Ray Trent) By Ray Trent The Triangle Chapter of the North State Officers have been in existence for the past nine years. It is an organization founded because blacks were not getting their fair share in local law enforcement. Members of the group are also community- oriented. They are very concerned about the prob lems people face daily. At Christmas, they adopt a family and make that season a little more pleasant. At Thanksgiving, they supply, cook and serve Thanksgiving dinner for the senior citizens at Henderson Towers. On January 7, the chapter held its annual fund rais ing ball at the Sheraton Imperial. To date, the ball has been the only source of funding. This year, the chap ter will sponsor a gospel event on May 14 at Durham High School. About 300 attended the ball. Eddie Hunter, vice president, and a Durham police officer, talked about people the group has helped; how those people identify officers and remember the help they’re given. Hunter also said the chapter is in the process of founding a home office and headquarters in Durham. There are yearly pledges of certain amounts of money now. Hunter said that the organization is start ing a high school GED program in public ho\ units, with the contention that educated parents better educate their children. Nobody has tinis youth, he said. Young people think they’ve made but we know better. As officers we know quickly they can fall. We have to make themi about the disadvantages of drugs and crime. Honored guests present were three widows offj officers: Mrs. Arnetta W. Barnes, widow of Of Joseph W. Barnes, Mrs. Leroy Ruffin, Jr., wid®, Leroy Ruffin, Jr. and Mrs. Ovelia D. Barnes, wi. of Officer Walter Barnes. Officers present were Garson McLeod, retired; 34 years with police, sheriff and state; ^ Saunders, chaplain. Chapel Hill Police Depart! Investigation, 20 years; Della Owens, secretary,; ham Police Department, Identification Division,^ years; Eddie Hunter, vice president, Durham organized crime division, 13 years. The Triangle Chapter of the North State Off^ work with all community groups to solve problen- the community, throughout the year. They ho^ group life membership in the NAACP and as ind^ uals, they are in virtually every organizationj works for the betterment of mankind. NOT GOOD ON ANY OTHER PROMOTIONS AVAILABLE ONLY IN STORES Vi/ITH VIDEO SHOPS It's really great when companies go out of their way for refunders! A deal I sent in was returned to me in a large envelope which contained my submission (including POPs) marked "box closed" and a bunch of other papers. While I'm sure the post office delayed my request, since my records proved I had mailed early, the company included a form for a new offer on the same product and several high-value coupons for many other products. So they will keep me as a customer/refunder! Then, I had several questions on a recent food deal offering up to $10 for a variety of product UPCs and dated tapes. It had photos of the products on the form, such as cream cheese, but didn't include the "lite" or "cholesterol-free" versions. I called the 800 number and was told that all types of each product \vere eligible. I also told them the dated tape requirement was unreasonable, since the time span for eligibility was less than a month and I had to send in 23 UPCs and tapes. The representative promised to reconsider requirements for future deals. On the other hand, another major manufacturer used to let you order up to five forms on one postcard. Now they've changed it to only one order per card. Give us a postage break! That's just a waste of money and time and certainly not very consumer friendly!
