Tender aJuiey Deli Rtiast Beef Coping She’s A Domineering Baptist By Dr. Charies W. Fault,., Dear Dr. Faulkner: ick» [toil .... - lU’ most everything in common eio, for one thing — our reii? beliefs. She has been a Bapari’ of her life and she goes to Sw* school and church every SunT** have not been to church since I * * a child. I used to believe in q? but I stopped believing in thee,' .ence of a supernatural being years ago. To me, religion is? myth, a fairy tale. The probij„. that my fiancee demands that 1 ” with her to church every 8,!* and sometimes even during"S week, I refuse to go to church ^ her and she either argues wit), " about it or refuses to speak t,,?* She’s a domineering Baptist W are supposed to get maitied il! after Christmas, but I cannot co tinue to go through these chan,! with her every Sunday, when si tries to force me to accept h,' beliefs. Why won’t she accent!!! beliefs? ' Mr. P., Richmond, VA Dear Mr. P.: Many marriages survive dif. Terences between the mates in education, career goals, even fan! ily values. However, few marriagts are able to tolerate, for long dif. ferences in religious preference, es. pecially if one partner is a slaiiatli theist and the other is an agnostit or atheist. This is virtually an j. resolvable problem. What I meai by that is that you and ypur fiance, will always have problems as loag as you disagree on whether God er ists. Philosophers for hundreds of years have been unable to agree« whether God exists, so you probj. bly will not be able to do so, either, A theist believes that God is». pematural, perfect, will live foreve: and controls the future of the anj. verse. This is but one of the nunj definitions of God, Atheists ji certain that God does not exist ail is a mere myth, a fairy tale like lie one about Santa Claus. Agnosfa say that there is not enough in formation to prove that God does» does not exist, therefore, they m - just "not sure" whether to believei God or not to believe. Obviously, big problems lie ahead for two people who must live together and raise children. Will ibi children be required to atteil church and thereby accept the eiii- tence of God on faith? Or, will ite children be allowed to decide fj themselves whether to go to chuiti or not to go to church, whether li pray or not to pray, whether to fol low the words of the bible or ool follow them? This is the "sticky wickel' regarding differences in religions philosophy. In addition, your k- havior may be questioned if you do not follow the words of the bit, even though you have not adopUd the bible as your guide in life. Yoi fiancee has obviously accepted Ibi bible as providing the final won! about how one should live his lift, and has based her acceptance of Ibe bible on faith. You cannot win an argUMl against anything that is based oi faith. Most of our beliefs ate taagll to us at an age which we are too young and inexperienced to rti- sonably challenge. These ideas slaj with us for our entire lives and, ii fact, shape our lives. Few peoplt adopt new philosophies during fliB lives. It is not a matter of one peisoi being right and the other peat being wrong. It is a matter of fid ing someone with whom ond ideas are compatible and will *• someday reach up and destroy Ik relationship. Religious diffeteits have the ability to disrupt any rtk tionship. Your wise move would be tofik a mate with whom your views * initially compatible and loi conflictive. Consult a good fH marital counselor. If you would like to contact ft- Charles Faulkner, you may »n* to him at: P.O. Box 955, Washiif ton, D.C. 20044-0955. The first hospital to use amj* lances was Bellevue In New W City in 1889.
