2-THE CAROLINA TIMES - SATURDAY, JUNE 30, 2012 Durham’s Nathaniel 'Rex’Purfoy Still Performing as a Cowboy Durham native Nathaniel “Rex” Purefoy is one of only two African Americans who performs a Wild West Cowboy Act in the U.S. The other is Andre McClain, a star with Ringling Bros. Circus who was inspired by Purefoy. Purefoy left Durham in 1971 to go and perform with the 1st Black Rodeo in New York that also featured Muhammad Ali and Woody Strobe. Her continues to perform today. He has performed with The UniverSoul Circus, Bill Pickett Rodeo; at the Gene Autry Museum, Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Las Vegas Convention Center. Purefoy was a photographer for many years for this newspaper. He got his interest in becoming a cowboy while watching movies at the Regal Theatre on Pettigrew St. All Photos by Barry Anderson.
