Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Presents Miss Jabberwock 2013-14 BY Chonna Campbell On Saturday, February 1, ten “beautiful debutantes” graced tht stage of Charles E. Jordan High School Auditorium in anticipatioi of the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Jabberwock Scholarship Gala. The 2013-14 theme of this annual event was “RENAISSANCE: Clever & Captivating Jewels”. The ten debutantes expressed their renaissance talent with a dynamic opening dance performance that revealed a modern day twist on the 20’s style dance along to ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’ by Christina Aguilera. The event continued with many memorable moments. The momenl many awaited came with the crowning of Miss Jabberwock 2013-11 Salita Greene. The Jabberwock Court consisted of 1 s ' Runner-up: Taylor Owens, 2 nd Runner-up: Joia Freeman, 3 rd Runner-up: Shawnesi Russell and 4 lh Runner-up: Ariana Johnson. Other superlative awards presented were Most Unique Style - Taylor Owens & Trae’ran: White, Most Sincere - Victoria Jackson & P. Benjamin Shaw, III. Deepest Thinker - Kayla Tate & Marvin Tillman, Jr., Best Smile - Kayla Daniels & Travis Miller, Life of the Party - Kayla Tate 4 Kelly Moore; Most Persistent - Salita Greene & Zairee Parker, Rare Jewel - Brandi Arledge & Oreyane Tate, Dancing Machine - Tayloi Owens & Jabin Bethea, Most Dedicated - Shawnesi Russell & Zaires Parker, and Mr. Personality - Kelly Moore and Miss Congeniality - Joia Freeman. Another Way Ministries Youth Program met at First Chronicles Community Church recently. The program focuses on teaching youth “another way” to live life that is positive and productive. Children are taught their “real history,” basic skills, i.e., how to cut grass, wash cars, dress for success and are assigned a mentor. Although the meeting venue is First Chronicles Community Church, 1306 Lincoln St., behind Lincoln Healthcare Center, this is city-wide program and anyone interested in participat ing as a student, volunteer, or mentor are welcome. Her escort was Trae’ranz White and she was mentored by Deloris Baker Hargow and Debra Dorsey. Joia Freeman, a Durham Academy senior, is the daughter of Rev Sterling Freeman and Michelle Graham-Freeman. Her escort was Kelly Moore and she was mentored by Sandra Lawson and Norms Petway. Salita Greene, a Jordan High School senior, is the daughter ol James and Kathy Greene. Her escort was Marvin Tillman, Jr and she was mentored by Bernadette Lewis-Langhorne and Bernadette Watts. Victoria Jackson, a Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School senior, is the daughter of Felton and Dwanna Wiggins Her escort was Phillip Robinson-Hayes and she was mentored by Maranda Leverette and Latisha Johnson. Allante’ Johnson, an Enloe High School senior, is the daughtei of John Johnson and Anthony & LaTanya Michael. Her escort was Zairee Parker and she was mentored by Mary Young and Clareths Woody. Ariana Johnson, a Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College Higl School junior, is the daughter of Glen and Grace Johnson. Her escort was Jabin Bethea and she was mentored by Harriet V. Davis and Carolyn Thornton Walker. Taylor Owens, a Hillside High School senior, is the daughter ol Lewis and Pamela Owens. Her escort was Travis Miller and she was mentored by Nina Mason and Cynthia Traynham. Shawnesi Russell, a Riverside High School junior, is the daughtei of Darryl Russell and Stephanie Williams. Her escort was P Benjamin Shaw, III and she was mentored by Remell Clemons ant Dilcy Grady Burton. Kayla Tate, a Hillside High School senior, is the daughter o: Charles Tate and Zarrida Davis. Her escort was Oreyane Tate ant she was mentored by April Pyatt and Ayana Moore. The Jabberwock was initially presented in 1925 in Boston Massachusetts. Jabberwock, a word copyrighted by Delta Signit Theta Sorority, Inc., derives from Lewis Carroll’s tale Alice it Wonderland nonsense poem “Jabberwocky,” in which it was customary for creatures from throughout the kingdom to gathei annually to present a gala event. The Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has held this annual scholarship program since 1962, awarding scholarships to Durham County residents. The Jabberwock Galan a formal event resulting from the culmination of social activities community service, educational workshops, and scholarship fundraising opportunities. The scholarships awarded to the 201- 14 debutantes Jabberwock candidate were in excess of $60,000.00 Ms. Asha Felder and NCCU Psychology Professor Dr. Jonathan Livingston were outstanding in their role as Mistress and Master o' Ceremony. Gloria McNeil - Durham Alumnae Chapter Presided Sonya Harris (2 nd Vice President and Jabberwock Chair) and Chonr- Campbell (Jabberwock Co-Chair) coordinated the event, along will Durham Alumnae Chapter members assisting in many roles to m^ the Jabberwock Gala a huge success.
