Five outstanding women will receive the “Women of Vision Awards of Excellence”. The “Women of Vision Awards of Excellence” (WOVE) recognizes individual women who have made great impacts on the Durham Community and beyond. Nominees must have demonstrated high degree of vision, innovation, and initiative in the pursuit of success in their chosen fields; be a member or product of the Durham Community (including the Research Triangle Park, Raleigh and Chapel Hill); must have worked to excel in her area while proactively serving as a role model for women and girls, embrace sisterhood and must be a representation of the ideals taught at Bennett College (even if she is not an alumna). John Perkins to Speak in Durham On Saturday, November 5, Dr. John M. Perkins, civil rights leader and founder of the Christian Community Development Association, will be giving a series of talks in Durham, NC. Dr. Perkins grew up in a sharecropping family in rural Missis sippi, where he was later active in the Civil Rights Movement. As a minister, Perkins has started churches, youth programs, a day-care center, a cooperative farm, health centers, a low-income housing de velopment and many other ministries, including the Christian Com munity Development Association. Along with his wife Dr. Vera Mae, he currently leads the John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation in Jack son, Mississippi. Perkins has been recognized for his work with 13 honorary doc torates. Three universities have established John Perkins centers. He is an international speaker and teacher on reconciliation, leadership, and the philosophy of ministry known as Christian Community De velopment. Dr. Perkins will be speaking at 8:30am at the DurhamCares break- fast fundraiser about his vision for restoration in our communities. The mission of DurhamCares is to mobilize Durham residents and institutions to love their neighbors, and attendees will learn how Dur hamCares is carrying on the work that Dr. Perkins began. At 10am Duke Chapel will be hosting a talk titled “Persevering in Pursuit of the Beloved Community” about how to sustain community development work for the long haul. This talk is being held in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Duke Chapel Pathways House and Duke Chapel’s year of celebration in honor of reopening the Chapel after a year of restoration work. Herrera — a poet, photographer, anthropologist, cartoonist and multimedia artist — was selected as the nation’s 21st poet laureate in June 2015. He is the first Mexican-American and Latino to hold the position. Herrera’s publications include 14 collections of poetry, prose, short stories, a young adult novel and picture books for chil dren with 21 books in total in the last decade.
