Turner is out after several week's confinement. Mr. M. K. Herring spent Sun day with his family in Winton. Mrs. E. M. Wooten spent Sun day with Mrs. J. A. Eley, Tunis. Mr. A. Lfigh Cobeland spent several days in Whitakers litis week. Mrs. J. W. Smith of Norfolk spent Sunday here with her hus band. Mr. Jno. E. Venn of Winton was in Ahoskie Monday on legal business. \ Mr. R. L. Phelps left Monda.v on a southern trip in interst of his shoe house. Mr. E. R. Roberts, of Suffolk, was in town Tuesday calling on our merchants. Mrs. J. N. Venn is speeding several days in the home of Mr. A. 0. Vairn near town. Miss Eulha Liverman, of Har rellsville, is spending several days with Mrs. E. C. Brittou. Messrs. Vernon Stephenson and Tom Howell of Mapleton were were visitors in town Sunday. , Miss Lizzie Flythe is visiting friends and relatives in Scotland Neck and Hamilton this week. Messrs. R. E. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Hite, of Franklin, Va. spent Sunday in the bome of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. llarrell. Mrs. ?. L. Rice and Mrs. A. J. Dunning Jr., of Aulander were in town Monday having dental work done. ? Misses Sallie Hollowell and Vivian Lassiter of Aulander spent tbe week end with Mr. and Mrs. Q. J. Newbern. Attorney W. R. Jobifson, of Windsor, spent several bours in town Tuesday. ' While here be paid the Herald office a call. At the regular cburch conference held Saturday, Jan. 23rd. tbe fol lowing additional members were selected to serve as deacons of tbe Aboekie Baptist church: G, G. Powell, Robert Holloman and C. C. Sessoms. Tbe latter having served in that capacity before, was immediately teceived as such. The other two will be ordained at a later date. ^ Union Dews Owing to the inclement weather Mr, 8. N. Watson did not fill bin regular appointment here Sunday. Mrs. W. A. Miller spent from Friday till Monday at Chowan College with her daughter, Miss Bcttie Williams Tayloe,' who has been sick. Mrs. Broad Dukes and?ebildren, Grace, Spencer . and Adelaide, of Tbelma, N. C. were guests in the home of Mr. J. J. Dukes. Mrs. Dukes was on her way to the St. Vincents hospital, Norfolk, for treatment. Mr. J. C. Brett spent several days in Norfolk last week. Mr. H. J. Brown was in Winton Monday. Mr. Sawyer, traveling salesman for "4" Grocery Co., Norfolk, was in town Tuesday. Quite a number of salesmen were on our streets the Past week. Those of our young people who gathered at the home of Miss Bertie Matthews last Friday eve ning to enjoy the main feature of the hour "candy-making" were: Misses Gladys Howell, Bernice Dunn, Kathleen Vaugban, Maggie Futrell, Cora Brown, Dorris Hor ton and Jennie Pruden. Messrs. Julian Parker, Paul, Bruce and Claude Dukes. Leigh W.vnns, Sidney Dunn, Cola and Joe Hor ton. After thoroughly enjoying the many games and good music, they ieft at the hour of 10: not only boestiag of a good teacher but of s good hostess m wtll. Chowan Club Meeting. The Chowan Club of Ahoskie meet* with Mrs. M. D^Gatlingon Tuesday the 2nd of February at 12 o'clock. Miss Landen, the Domestic Science Teacher of Chowan Col lege will be here to give lessons in herwork. She will arrive on A. M. train expecting to leave at 2:40, so therefore we urge the members to meet promptly on time. ? ? ? ? ? m m i ' Meeting of the Round Dozen On Friday evenhig of January 22nd., Miss Janie Cherry was hostess to, and quite royally enter tained the members of the Round Dozen Club. The games, or rath er the contests. engaged in were anonymous, and consisted of a series of letters which were to be rearranged so as to spell the names of famous battles of the Civil War, or of illustrious Con federate Generals, etc. In all there were four" contests. The ladies and gentlemen were divided into companies of twos, each couple working for the largest number of names in a given time, a !? s_ . a. ? - - ana cnanging partners ior everj < content. Miss Puttie Leary and Mr. Stanley Lear.v, after Mr. Leary hud tied for first honors and tlien made a lucky draw among the big numbers, were declared the win nera in the contest, and to each of them was presented a painting of thfe Confederate Flag?souvernirs < of Lee's and Jackson's birthdays. The club was next graced by the presence of Miss Sessoms and Mr. Perry, each bearing platters well loaded with delicacies of a most palatable variety. Conversation and a "fine and forfeiture" game occupied the time which remained until the coming of the hour that suggested r*|>ose. Those enjoying the genial even ing were: Mesdames, M. D. Cur tis and J. N. Vann; Misses Busker ville. Minnie Baker. Janie Cherry, Ida Henry, Pattie Leiry, Bettie Sessoms and Lucile Magette, who was a very ente'itaining visitor; Messrs. W. L. Curtis, J. O. Car ter. Stanley Leary. Lloyd Parker, J. H. Robertson, E. T. Snipes, Dr. Walker and L. C. Williams. The next meeting is invited to be held at the home of Miss Pattie Leary on Friday evening Feb ruary 5th Reported. Oyster and Ice Cream Supper. Powellaville, N. C., Jan. 25,.1915. The Oyster and Ice Cream sup per given Friday night by the ladies' Missionary Society of Powellaville Baptist church was very successful. A good crowd was present. Mrs. Honeycutt gave several , readings in her charming manner. Musical selections were also rend ered. A cake was sold wbicb brought $44.51. The whole sum realized was $80.70 > Harvey D. He was recovering from an attact of mumps, when he went in the field to chase and catch some hogs from which he received internal injuries that re sulted in his death a few days later. Harvey was a member of St. Johns Baptist Church and also the Woodmen of the World at that place. He was buried Sunday P. M. at the home Mr. E. P. Parker, his fatber-iB-law. Owing to bad1 weather the funeral servives were verv short and conducted by Key. Sullivan of Murfrreesboro. Harvey was a young man of 26 years, a good neighbor, fatSfc* and husband. He leaves a wife and 3 small children, an aged father and mother, a number of brothers and sisters and a host of friends who will miss him so much. Death ol Little Sallie Perry. Death entered the house of Mr. and Mr#. Ohmlie Perry on Satur- < I day January 23., and taken away I their baby child Sallie.
