mm nun HfRoio. PUBLISHED WFEKLY BY W. U. Smith, Editor and Prop, at AHOSKIE. N. C. Subscription Pries: Oa* ^UUmf 'TMr In Advance Advertising Rates; Very Reasonable and made known on request. Entered ae second-class matter Feb ruary 25th, 1910, at tne poet office at Ahoekie, N. C., under the Act of Match A 1879. ? v Congress and the Legislature has adjourned, and the dailies will have to resort to more war news. The merchant who never adverr tises has been likened to the far mer who looks for a. crop where no seed is sown. A little more praise while one is alive would be much better than oceans of eulogy when one is dead. Of coarse, a shallow nature may be pufied up by praise, but the deep nature is encouraged by it. and the deep natures are more plentiful than the shsllow. Don't forget that an oui.ce of taffy is worth more than a ton of e^itaphy. Many a wounded soldier may now be able to reflect on what shakespeare says about "A scar nobly got, or a noble scar, is s good livery of honor." To many it will be about the only comfort they will get for the sacrifice made. Alt the same, there i* a wealth of truth in it that has its value. Cer tainly it is noble to suffer for one's country and there is a real pride in carrying on one's body the proof of suffering. In there days of high cost of living and increased taxation, many families are learning to economize as never before, but not unlikely the economy in some may be more apparent tban real. Cer tainly that must have been the case in the family of the woman who loudly boasted of her edotfomy and when asked on what she was economizing, replied, with pcide, "We've given ud toast for lunch." The people of a town may be considered as one family inasmuch as all have, or should have, a com mon interest in its welfare. That fact ought to make for greater co operation in those projects design ed to advance the" well-being of the communitv and to make every one jealous of its good name. Every citizen should resent any unfair criticism of his home town just as he would ene upon his own family, and he should work for its interests in the same spisit as he should work for the good of his home. *' WHY THE DIFFERENCE? - Why is it that farmers living side by side on farms of equal size and fertility get such different results! Evidently the reason must be found mostly in th? men themselves. One man takes in agricultural papers, keeps posted on farming, plans for the future, keeps his land in fine condition and farms scientifically. Another man neglects these things, loafs about in town instead of attending to his work, and fails to keep his buildings and implements in good repair. One man nhds farming pays and is happy, the other says there is no money in farming and is in a chronic state of discourage ment. Beware of Ointment for Catarrh that Contain Mercury as mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell end completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfsces. Such srticles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable physici ans, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possible thrive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney A Co.. Toledo, O.. contains no mercu ry. and is taken internally, acting dir ectly upon the blood and mucous sur faces of the system.
