When organized eight years ago, the bank had a capital of $7,500. This has been increased to $10,450 and it has accumulated a surplus equal to its capital, showing its strength <and growth. The bank fixtures are of mahog any, and the general appearance of the institution together with its at mosphere of service and helpfulness has made it one of Hertford County's greatest assets. The directors of the bank are Dr. J. A. Powell, Messrs. W. A. Perry, J. O. Askew, Jr., H. H. Taylor, B. Scull, J. Ed. Askew, R. B. Williford, R. C. Mason and M. R. Taylor. The officers are Dr. Powell, one of the most prominent physicians of this section; Mr. W. A. Perry, a leading farmer is first vice-presi dent; Mr. J. O. Some accomplish more than others but it is the spirit of the thing which counts most of all because of the example it sets for other citizens. Such a man is Mr. H. H. Taylor, one of the leading business men in Northeastern North Carolina, a lead ing citizen of Harrellsville, and a man who stands for all things which are progressive and go to aid in the development and upbuilding of the community. In addition to conducting a lead ing and well-stocked general mer chandise store at Harrellsville, Mr. Taylor is an extensive manufact urer of pine and gum lumber, is owner of a cotton gin, and also operates a' grist mill. The business was first established nineteen years ago under the firm name of Copeland & Taylor, being taken over by Mr. Taylor six years ago. The general merchandise store is completely stocked and carries a large line of staple and fancy groceries, flour, feedstuffs, etc., dry goods, notions, men's ' clothing, shoes and boots, caps, hats, gents furnishings, hardware, harness > fur niture. etc. The store is noted for1 its fair prices, and the fact that it sells honest merchandise at honest prices means much to its business as woli as increases the prestige of Har rellsville as a trading center. In his other enterprises Mr. Tay lor exercises the same ideas and principles. a His plants an modern and he operates the cotton gin and grist mill with gasoline engines. His saw mill is operated by steam. For many years Mr. Taylor used an International tractor mounted on a log ear to take the place of a steam locomotive. He recently pur chased a Fordson tractor to take Its place. Included in his equipment are 'three stationery engines and two farm tractor engines, as well as three marine engines.
