Griffith and (Jbar lie Parker and daughter Minnie Louise, spent Thursday in Union with Mrs. Archie Brown. On account of the bad roads, Miss Myrtle Swindell has been unable to meet with the ladies of the Better ment Society since January. We were glad to have her meet with us again last Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Amelia Cowan of Norfolk, Va. spent the week-end in the home of Mr. Joe Cowan. Mr. James Robert Brown is on the sick list at this writing. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Griffin and daughter Mary Catherine of Wood land, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Chitty. Mrs. Charlie Parker spent Monday i and Tuesday in Norfolk, Va^" shop ping. Mr. and Mrs. Zebb Chitty and children spent Sunday in Aulander visiting relatives. Messrs. Johnnie Snipes and Stan ley Brown spent a few hours in Wood land Wednesday afternoon. Miss Lois Cole of Roxobel spent the week-end with her friends Misses Elsie Cowan and id^ Belle Baker at this place. The teachers of St. John's town ship met at the Menola school build ing last Saturday and held their final teachers' meeting. Mr. Ephraim Parker who has been in feeble, health fqr several months, died at his home near here last Thurs day. The funeral services were con ducted at his home Friday afternoon amid a host of friends and relatives. He was buried in the family burying ground. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. ' 0 ? TRANSPLANT WEBSTER TREE t The United States Chamber of Commerce is to have a new building at Seventeenth and H Streets, in Washington. One of the buildings being torn down to make room for it is the old Corcoran house in Which lived Daniel Webster many years ago. In the yard is a boxwood tree under which Webster often sat to read. We are sorry that we will only have our fine teachers with us a few weeks longer. DEATH OF zr=n; LASS ITER One of the saddest deaths that has occurred In Ahoskie for several Tsars occurred Monday afternoon when the Death Angel visited the home of Mr. Herbert Lassiter and took his loving wife to the Greet Beyond. Mrs. Lassiter was a native of Chowan county and moved to Ahoskie about five years ago. She was a Mrs. Ward when she moved here and was married to Mr. Herbert Lassiter about one year ago. Mrs. Lassiter was known to be one of the best Christian women of the community and was a member of Myrlck. 8wamp Baptist church. She leaves a hus band, two small children by her first husband,ja baby about a week Old by her last husband, and'a"Koat of rela tives and friends to mourn the loss of a dear one. Funeral services were held at My rick Swamp Baptist Church, Chowan County, Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery.
