MRS. JOSEPHINE WHITEHEAD GODWIN On Tuesday afternoon, May 9, 1922, our community waa saddened to leant of the death of Mrs. Jose phine Godwin who passed away at ette o'clock in the 79th year of her afe. She had been a great sufferer and her death had been expected for some time but hope lingers as long as there is life, and her loving children and friends were hoping that she would revive and mmain with them a while longer. However, on Sunday morning iff was seen that rite was sinking fast and on Monday her lov ed onto realised that she was suely slipping away to that beautiful shore where there are no more tears, neither sorrow or weeping. She suffered in tensely but no one ever heard her murmur, although at times it seemed - as if she could hardly bear her pain. Just before she fell asleep in Jesus, she remarked that she hated to leave her children but she would be glad at times to get relief. Her body was so racked with pain that she could not rest in any position and many times at the midnight hour has she been found sitting up in bed holding sweet communion with her dear Lord whom she loved so. Mrs. Godwin was born in Carteret county near Beaufort on December 12, 1843. She was the daughter ofj John Stanley and Sianey Whitehead. All. of her young life and until her marriage was spent on her father's term. She was married in August, 1864 to James Levainia Godwin of Hetford county who preceded her to' the grave 22 years ago. They came to the present Godwin home place ?ear Ahoskie in the summer of 1865 and where she has resided until a few years ago when she became too feeble to keep house. Since then she has Hved with her children. She was a consistent member of Bethlehem Baptist church for 30 years and as long as she was able, took pleasure in her church duties. We have suffered a great loss and are heart-broken, yet we know that God doeth all things well. She is sow free from suffering and resting in the Saviour's loving arms. It was hard to give you up dear grandmother but we are praying to meet you on that Golden Shore where there will be no more parting. Mrs. Godwin leaves to mourn her lees; six children who are Mrs. A. G. Basemore, Mrs. Mattie Hyatt, Mrs. T. E. Parker, and John W. Godwin, all at Ahoskie; James I Godwin of Suffolk, Va., Joseph B. Godwin of Macon, Ga.; 16 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, besides a host of ether relatives and friends. POPULATION STILL IN THE COUNTRY A census of school teachers in America shows that there are 800,000 and that MORE THAN FIFTY PER CENT of them are located in com munities of 6,000 population or lees. School teachers are where popul iation is and the foregoing are more proof that there's nothing in the asertion that something over half the population of the United States is in the cities. Moreover, if you will include country, towns..up 0,000 popula tion, we venture to say that more than sixty P*r cent of the teachersj are in rural sections. ? 0 Two Doge "Luxujy" In Berlin. A quintet of talented vocalists compose this company and their three-part program will offer ade quate scope to their abilities. In the first part they will feature a group of English motion songs, in the second, a potpourri of the hits from the popular and light operatic , successes or "not so long ago," in the third, -they tjdll present that well-known ana perhaps best-loved of the short operas, "Cavellet"' J Rusticana." Prospective ticket buyers will need to note that a special price of $1.00 is scheduled for this event and, if they buy season tickets, this extra tax will be avoided. An other event for the last day Is a "real honest-to-goodness Punch and Judy show," by Professor Will i H. Smith, who has delighted liter ally tens of thousands of people by the antics of his puppets. Both in this country, and abroad (where he entertained Royalty by special command) he enjoys a reputation made excellent by his forty years experience. Of course a most important event of the last day and also of the week (in the Children's opinion anyway) is the Junior Chautauqua pageant, which takes place the last afternoon. A Specially written | pageant, "Conquests of Peace" has been chosen by the various Chau- i tauquas in the country as the best submitted, and will be given here. ? \ jTlred| I relates lira.
