DEMOCRATS WILL HAVE FULL COUNTY TICKETS Ballot* For County Are Being Printed?'Must Register This Week The Democratic Party has added tpro new candidates for county offices. The eounty executive committee has named A. T. Newsome of Winton can didate for surveyor, and Dr. J* M. Futrell of Murfreesboro, candidate for Coroner. For several years Hert ford County has had neither survey or nor coroner, there being little work for either officer to do. However, when the Republicans as sembled in Ahoslde some time ago they decided to nominate a full county ticket, and included in their list of nominees candidates for the two offices which have been neglected. This action on their part gave rise to thoughts of semi-Republican admin istration in the Copnty, something unheard of in late years. The Demo cratic executive Committee has re moved all probability of any Repub lican being elected to an office in Hertford County by naming the two candidates. The registration books will close next Saturday at sundown, and reg istrars are urging that all voters reg ister in time to qualify for the elec tion on November 7th. E. J. Gerock, chairman of the county board of elections,-has placed the order for ballets, and expects to distribute them to the six polling places the first of the coming week. In addition to the senatorial, Judicial, county and township offices to be fill ed at the election, there will be a test vote in this county on the appoint ment of a commissioner from Maneys Neck Township to serve during the next term of office. The two tickets, Democrat and Republican, to be voted on, Novem ber 7th, are as follows: STATE DEMOCRATIC TICKET For Solicitor Third Judici.1 DUtrict GARLAND E. Johns Township Republican Ticket For Road Commissioner H. C. HOLLOMAN TAXPAYER BELIEVES COMMISSION WRONG Ahoskie, N. C., October 22, 1922. Editor Hertford County Herald, Dear Sir?I have seen so much .about roods of late, I want to ask for space in your paper to say just a few words lor the taxpayers to look oyer. In the beginning, I will say I did not vote for the road bonds, but now we have them, I think it is up to the people to get what roads we can for the money, and I have decided a bond issue is the only way we will ever get them. But I want to ask "who is responsible for the recent clash be tween the Road Commissioners and tile' road superintendent?" I have heard all the commissioners except the man at Harrellsville say they did not believe they could get a man in North Carolina to fill Hines place. But all at once one Commissioner calls two other Commissioners aiftl tells them we are to havei a special meeting on Wednesday?very impor tant This same Commissioner takes his automobile, drives nine miles to get another Commissioner and these two drive twenty-four miles to ask the' Chairman to call a meeting. The meeting was called. The Secretary Wis instructed to tell Hines to step out without a hearing at a meeting ht the Grand Jury room behind dosed doors. The Board's attorney was asked if such a meeting was lawful. His an swer was that it was his opinion that certain circumstances would justify a secret meeting. This is Hr. Boone's opinion. What about the opinion of 95 per cent Of the taxpayers of the County? What is their opinion? Public opinion is law written or un written. Even though every charge they had against Hines had been true,'it would have been the same, every member of that Board signed a contract giving Hines absolute control of all roads and all equipment that they had any jurisdietfoi over, If there is any thing to a contract, Hines has a right to move every mule, man, and his camp to any township he may wish and keep them as long as he wishes. Three Commissioners say he is spending too much money. It's strange they waited a year and a half to And it out and he would have spent ten thousand more if he could have gotten the cars to have hauled the gravel that this Board instracted him to use. No they have not got the money to spend but I see they bought a car load of steel bridges and passed an order for Hines to have them put in at once?all to be built with concrete, abutments and piers. That is right? just the thing to do; but before he can get the bridge at Liverman's Mill, there will be danger of concrete freesing. .If this concrete freetes, will Hines be to blame for this? The bridges cost around two thousand dol lars; the cement will cost about twice as much. The steel is to* be delivered in 30 and 60 days. What I want to know is, is Hines spending the money or is it this Board? No matter who it is spending it, Hines was entitled to a hearing. I hear they held this job open four months to get him. He gave up a position where he was giving satisfaction and they were so anxious for him they never even put any limit on the time they hired him. Just for a term of years. This same board wanted to pass an order to have the chairman and secretary sign a lot of checks that be might have expense money from one pay day to the next This order was not passed for the reason that Hinee refused to take the signed check, saying he might not decide to steal ten or fifteen thousand dollars, but he might lose the checks and the fellow who found them might need money. If they wanted to have a Secret meeting, why did they not keep it secret from all the state papers as well as those out of the state? I hear of lots of damage suite but if this is not a chance for a damage suit I don't know the reason. Again I ask the taxpayers of Hertford County "who is responsible for this controversy and disgrace to any county-^-the Road Commissioners or the Road Superintendent?" Respectfully yours, ^ ' A TAX PAYER. NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATORS Having qualified before the Clerk of the Superior Court of Hertford County aa Administrators of the es tate of J. A.
