- I '?? MURFREESBORO NEWS Mrs. Fannie Jernigan spent a few days of laat week with Mrs. Stanley Winborne, returning home on Sun daq. Mr. Starkey Jernigan of Nor folk waa also in Murfreeaboro last week. Mr. H. D. Joyner, Sr., has returned home after a visit with relatives and friends in Ahoslde and St. Johns. Mr. E. G. Evans of Franklin, Vs., is spending some time in Murfreea boro on business. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McGlohon were in Cofleld Sunday. Mr. Stanley Winborne was in Roanoke Rapids on business last Sat urday. Mr. O. A. Chetty was in Norfolk on business Sunday. Miss Mollis Taylor and Miss Howell from Como were here shop ping last Saturday. Mrs. L. F. Parker, near Severn, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Horne and little daughter, Margarette; Mr. and Mrs. 0. L. Horne and daughter, Rosaline of Pendleton, and Mrs. E. P. Benthall and daughter, Olive, of near Ahos kie were guests on Saturday of Mrs. Carolyn Horne and Mrs. J. A. Boy ette. Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Chetty and children and Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Futrell motored to Cofteld Sunday afternoon. Mrs. F. G. Hines is visiting her brother in Goldsboro. Mrs. Uriah Watson, Misses Eliza beth and Mildred Watson, Elizabeth Hines and brothers, Theron and Ber nis, were in Ahoslde Wednesday even ing of last week. Mr. H- D. Joyner, Jr., of Ashley's Grove, was a caller in town Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Short and Julia Short have returned from an auto mobile trip of about 200 mlies. While away they visited Mr. Short's sister, Mrs. Brooks in Bath and in Wash ington they visited relatives and friends. J. T. Benthall of Suffolk who visi tad relatives in this county last weak was in Murfreesboro Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Bailey Barnes of Ahoakie were guests of the letter's mother Sunday. Mr. Maynard Everette of Windsor was here last week on business. Mrs. E. B. Hill and Mrs. J. W. Hill went to Wiuton Monday to enter ex hibits for the fair. The graded school teachers motor ed to Winton Monday to enter stud ent's work for the fair. Mrs. E. B. Hill entertained Wed nesday evening, November 8th at her home in honor of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Chambers who have left to attend the Raleigh Conference. Hope Grove School opened on Monday, November 6th- with a large enrollment and an increase in the new pupils. The faculty consists of three teachers. Misses Hattie Boone, Ber that Bryant and Velma Chatty. MENOLA LOCALS Mr. Berry Lee White of Norfolk, Va., spent the week-end in the home of Mrs. Margaret Brown. He was accompanied home by Mrs. White who spent the past week as the guest of her mother. Mr. Clarence Perry of Ahoakie was a visitor in town Sunday afternoon. Miss Elizabeth Brown, a member of the Franklinton High School fac ulty, Frankiinton, N. C., was the guest of her mother, Mrs. Mary Brown, Sat urday and Sunday. ' Rev. John F. Cale of Roxobel filled his regular appointments here Satur day and Sunday. While here he din ed in the homes of Mr. J. T. Chitty and Mr. Joe F. Cowan. Mrs. Ella Brown of Woodland was the house guest of Mrs. Margaret Brown Saturday and Sunday. M{. and Mrs. "Bill" Griffin and little daughter, Mary Catherine of Woodland, spent Sunday with their daunt, Mrs. J. T. Chitty. Misa Bertha Parker, principal of the Mapleton School, spent the week end at home. Mr. Lee Parker of the Southern Commercial Company at Durham, vis ited in town Sunday afternoon and evening. Messrs. J. T. Chitty and H. U. Grif fith attended the meeting concerning the 76 Million Campaign at'Ahoskie last Tuesday. Mrs. Thomas Walter Bickett, wife of North Carolina's late war gover nor, will address the ladies of Menola on next Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 21 at 2 o'clock in the school auditorium. We wish to urge all the ladies of this community especially, to be present at this meeting. Miss Myrtle Swindell, Home Dem onstrator, spent last Wednesday with the ladies of the Betterment She assisted them in basketry. Mr. H. G. Snipes spent Saturday and Sunday at the Sarah Leigh Leigh hospital, visiting his wife. We have not been able to learn the condition of Mrs. Snipes since Mr. Snipes re turn. Mrs. H. U. DO IT NOW?SUBSCRIBE TO THE HERALD-$1.50 per yew MEETING OF BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS The Board of County Commissioners of Hertford County met on the 6th day of November, 1922. Present: J. M. Eley, Chairman, J. C. Taylor, E. W. Whitley, E. H. Eure, J. O. Askew, Jr., and F. G. Tayloe. ? Proceedings of last meeting read and approved. The following committees were continued, to-wit: Committee to repair Court House in *Maneys Neck Township. Committee on error in listing town lot in Ahoskie to Mrs. Hyatt. The matter of amount due the county by the State Highway Com mission is continued. Committee to build boat for Hills Ferry. Committee to secure stair strip for Court house. Committee to purchase electric motor for pump. Committee to underpin water closet. r __ W. T. Pace having appeared and made satisfactory explanation as to the waterworks; the same was accepted by the Board. The Clerk of the Board is instructed to write Wilson and Co., Suffolk to. ascertain when they expect to start installation of the heating plant 'for Court House and jail. The following bonds of Tax Collectors were presented and unani mously approved by the Board for the year 1922. Bond of T. T. Parker, Tax Collector Murfreesboro township. Bond of W. H. Vinson, Tax Collector St Johns Township. Bond of J. L. Smith, Tax Collector Harrellsville Township. W. J. Hill, Tax Collector Maneys Neck Township presented receipt from American Surety Co., showing premium paid for 1922 and his bond being in force same was approved by the Board. The Board of Health of the County appeared before the Board and requested that the Board of Commissioners appropriate a sum equal to 60 per cent of the salary of a whole time health officer for the County, and after discussing the matter, it was upon motion and carried, ordered that said request be granted and the board votes to pay 50 per cent of such expense. The Board realizing that the Road Commissioners are in need of im mediate funds to meet pay rolls and that November payment on Bonds is not payable until the 16th of November, instructed the Clerk to communi cate with Bray Brothers Co., at once to endeavor to have November note paid at once so as to have necesory funds in hands of said Commissioners. On motion and carried the Board orders that T. T. Parker, Tax Collector be given credit for $2'.00 on account of advertising W. E. Jenkins property. The Clerk is requested to communicate with the Hertford Observor and secure the rates of that paper,for publishing all county proceedings and to report to the Board. The Board votes to give S. E. Vaughan, Tax Collector Ahoskie Town ship authority to advertise and sell the real estate of Rufus Lassiter and Marshall Lassiter for taxes for year 1921 on the first Monday In December, 1922. The Board, upon motion and carried instructs the Clerk to allow S. E. Vaughan, Tax Collector, credit on 1921 settlement for taxes of Helen Benthall and Newsome and Lassiter, bankrupts, and to charge the same to his account for 1922. Upon motion and carried the Register of Deeds is given authority to take the list of J. Roy Parker for 1922 and to compute taxes on same and place in hands of Tax Collector.
