ARCHIE SMITHER Practice limited to " Examination and Diagnosis of the Eyes and the Fitting of Glasses Suite 506-8-10-12-13 National Bank Building SUFFOLK, VA. \ CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NEWS The Board of Directors met Thurs day evening, November 16th in a very interesting .session. The hotel situation was thoroughly canvassed and action taken on two propositions by outside interests, and from all indications Ahoskie will enjoy a mod ern hotel in the very near future. The Secretary was instructed to address an invitation to Mr. Frank Page to visit Ahoskie and obtain ac tual knowledge of road conditions thereabout, and also to address a similiar letter to M/ Hart, the dis trict chairman, and these matters have been attended to. Report of the Secretary on his trip to Raleigh was read and approved and the Chamber goes on record as fav oring the Ports Commission Bill. The Secretary was instructed to buy office equipment. A general meeting of the Chamber was called for Monday night, Nov ember 20th. Road Signs The Chamber of Commerce has just closed an order with the Lynch burg Sign Corporation for fifty (50) large signs reading "It pays to buy and sell in Ahoskie?-Chamber of Commerce" and at the bottom of each sign is the name of different mer chants who have talcen these signs. These signs will be placed on the five roads leading into Ahoskie and will extend as far away as 20 miles, there by covering a territory of 100 miles. Roanoke Rapids, Rocky Mount, Ral eigh, and other progressive towns of the state have identical signs which shows that Ahoskie is just as pro gressive and just as interested in building up her town. We are going to see that the fire plugs are flushed more regularly in order to have them ready in case of need. A representative of the power company is in the city now making a survey of the physical conditions of this and other plants and will submit a report to the secretary not later than Friday as to the actual cost of producing a certain amount of elec trical energy, which report will be of interest to the Chamber and in fact, every citizen of the town. A letter from the Lindsey Fisher ies Company of Southport, N. C. say ing that they have three boats, one 36 ton, one 50 ton, and one 200 ton, one of which they would like to install on the Chowan River provided a suf ficient amount of freight can be se cured to justify the running of same. That matter is being investigated by the Chamber. The Secretary was in Windsor Tuesday interviewing a number of citizens on Bertie County taking part in a two-county fair to be held at Ahoskie next year, and met with great success as they were all hearti ly in favor of a proposition of that kind, and the secretary found those good people have a very warm regard for Hertford and its citizehs, 4nd will be glad to co-operate with them. The chances are fine for a real fair' at ? Ahoskie next year. The work of cleaning up the streets is progressing very fast and as soon as they are completed, we are going to see that the vacant lots are cleaned, also the rears of all the business houses, thereby eliminating *he fire hazard. We are going to ask the ladies of the town to see that their yards are clean and the rubbish placed in the alley to be hauled away by the city, within the next two weeks. There are a number of foot bridges in the city which need re pairing and also certain ditches are to be plowed out in order to elimi nate any water standing on the streets. The Chamber of Commerce is having a competent force of men to do this work as they can do it cheaper'and more efficiently than by it being done individually; we hope the individuals will appreciate this , fact and will be sufficiently interest I ed in their town to pay the small amount apportioned them as they will only be charged for the work done on their particular premises. Th<? Chamber of Commerce is tak ing up with the city authorities the question of more efficiency at the lighting plant and the water wprks, especially in hauling coal and cinders. At present, there is a machine haul ing nothing but coal and it is the be lief of the Chamber that instead of wasting half of his trip by running light, that after dumping the coal they can load with cinders and dump those where they are needed on the streets, thereby saving the cost of another wagon or machine. A brief of the Ports Commission Bill has just been received by the Secretary and will be published as soon as possible. In the Amistice Day iootball con tests the following teams won: V? P. I. over N. C. State, Trinity over Wake Forest, University of North Carolina over V. M. I., and Elon over Guilford. NOTICE North Carolina?Hertford County: Superior Court, Before The Clerk.
