Mr. Edwin Turnley ha* arrived from Plant City, Fla., to spend ? few days with hi* mother, Mrs. Ann* Turnley at Chowan College. Mr. Samuel Campbell of Hickory, N. C., has been a recent guest of hi* .brother, Mr. J. A. Campbell. Mr. Jack Boon* of Jackson, N. C., is spending some time in Mat frees boro where he is doing construction work. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Wynn have re turned from New York City where they purchased many attractions in the line of spring goods. Mrs. P. S. Venn and Mrs. Anna Turnley of Chowan College have re turned home from Lynchburg, Va./ where they attended the funeral of their brother, Mr. Fred Alley. Miss Naomi Wiggins returned home Wednesday of last week from Richmond and Baltimore where she bought an attractive line of spring millinery. Mr. and Mrs. Whitie Barrett who live on the road between Murfrees boro and Como, lost, by death, last week their little child, an infant son. At a recent meeting of the town commissioners, the most interesting business feature transacted was the purchase of the right to extend Elm Street through the old Fair Grounds and if possible to run the extension to connect with the\:ounty road. The right-of-way through the fair grounds property was bought from Mr. J. D. fUUt ' la Honor of Mix Knott Friday evening, February 16th, Mrs. Z. L. Davis entertained at a Valentine party given at her home, in honor of Miss Gertrude Knott of the College faculty. Many delightful features were en joyed. In two very interesting con tests, Miss Knott and Miss Paul were the prise winners, the former re ceiving a box of stationery, the latter, a bottle of perfume. Those present besides the honoree were: Misses Elizabeth Hines, Kath rine Paul, Neva Futrell, Elisabeth Watson, Mary BenthaU. Messrs. B. C. Cobb, George Campbell, Zelph Davis, Samuel Campbell of Hickory, N. C., and Jack Boone of Jackson. Mr .a ad Mrs. F. G. Hiaes Are Host. Wednesday evening, February 14, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Hines were hosts at a social given for their daughter. Miss Elizabeth Hines who entertained her friends at a pretty Valentine party in compliment to her house guest, Miss Margaret Anderson of Tarboro. About twenty-five guests were present who, at the close of the evening's diversions were served with most delightful refreshments, i B. Y. P. U. Soda] Friday evening, February 2nd the Efficiency B. Y. P. U. of Meherrin Baptist Church held their quarterly social for the first quarter of 1923, at the Baptist parsonage. The weather being warm and pleasant, all the members were pres ent except two. Under the direction of the chairman of the social com mittee, Miss Bertha Bryant, many pleasant social features were enjoyed. A very enjoyable feature of the pro gram was a contest, "Root the Peanut" in which Mr. Theo Liver man won the prise, while Mr. Gary Vinson won Dm booby. After an hour and a half of merri ment in the parlor, the boys chose (blind-folded) their parte tfrs, and proceeded to the dining room where the committee served delictus re freshments. Mrs. Paul Brett Dead Sunday morning, February 18th, Mrs. f*aul Brett of near Morfreee boro, died at the home of her parents, Mr.and Mrs. V. J. Livtnnan, Ashley's Grove. The death was the result of 1 ?a.???? ? an attack of the flu which developed into pneumonia. Besides her parents and two broth en, the deceased leaves a husband and an infant just two month old. ?? ? The rooms were attractively decorated and dur ing the evening a delKious course of jelly, whipped cream, and cake was served. Games were played for the occasion, and all enjoyed a good time. Eley left Monday of last week for Baltimore, Md., to purchase his 'spring stock of goods. From there he went to Philadelphia were he visited his son, Dr. Vernon Eley. Mr. Eley returned home Friday. Miss Bertha Parker, principal of ! the Mapelton School, spent from Fri day until Sunday as the guest of he mother, Mrs. Sallie Parker. Mr. Ruffin Benthall of Murfrees boro was a business visitor here Sat urday afternoon. Mr. J. R. Barrett of Norfolk, Va., is visiting his friend, Mr. R. B. Bret ton. . We are sorry to report that Mrs. H. G. Snipes is on the sick list at this writing. Mr. and Mrs. Archie MMtatwn and children of Union were the guests of the letter's mother, Mrs. H. U. Grif fith Sunday afternoon. Mr. Charlie Liverman and family have recently moved in our neighbor hood. We welcome them here. Mr. Liverman was formerly a citisen of Woodland. Between ten and eleven o'clock Sunday night, one of the tenant houses on Mr. Henry Brown's farm caught on fire. Screams and yells soon brought enough help together and the flames were speedily extin guished, the damage being small. Mrs. C. G. Parker and daughter, Janie of Woodland, was the guest of her mother, Mrs. H. U. Griffith Mon day afternoon. Messrs. Oscar and Dan Snipes have each purchased new Fords.
