Is this the ideal Senior? Ao' 10 be sure these qualities are essential, but an ideal senior must? more than that. The Seniors are the ones thkt are always looked to and imitated It is up to them to set the high stand ard, and to live daily so that if they are modelled after, their followers B.0t f? fmr wrong. I, the Sen iors cheat on examination, it is only toman nature if the boys and girls in the lower grade, say, "the Seniors do it, I can too." The Seniors are constantly watched because 0f the fact that they are Seniors and that makes it more neces sary that they be on guard. They should hold their standards high for Tow!1 S? This kind we are wjng to follow, to admire, to love, Wend? f?r ?Ur These are the characteristics that! can be seen outwards, but the ideal Senior has many inner virtues which ?e always admired. At heart the Senior should be ambitious and al ways strive for the highest attain ments, ambitious to rise in the world The S.wV0' the S8ke of Spring the thirst for applause, but for the aake of serving humanity in the true estand highest way. He should strive for building his character on solid foundations that it can stand the storms that come in after lfe. He should try to do the things which command the admiration and respect of his fellow students. He should forget his self-important ,irs and be considerate of the feelings of other* He should strive for the highest hon ors possible, and labor tor the best interests of his school and class and try to make the glory of his school higher and purer because of his being there. A Senior should inwardly have self-confidence, should feel sure of himself on every occasion and nev er for one moment harbor the idea of! failure but ever push forward to some gh goal, ever laboring, hoping, as piring and in the end attaining it Finally the ideal Senior should have a. true conception of life and humanity, should understand and sympathize with his co-mates, lending a helping hand when possible to his less fortunate, struggling brother, helping him when on the rocky shores of ill fortune and trouble and letting their hearts throb together in as true and genuine sympathy as ever beat in the heart of w?ap. Cowan, Junior. COLUMBIAN LITERARY SOCIETY The Columbian Literary Society held ite farewell meeting Friday af ternoon in the auditorium. Every one had endeavored to make this meeting especially successful as it was the last one. The Society was called to order by the president, and after the roll call by the secretary, the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. A short business meeting next took place. Then the following program was rendered: Devotional exercises ,'Mr. Raynor Columbian song Society Debate: Query; "Resolved that women have more influence in t?e history of the world than men."! Affirmative: Mildred King and Mabel (Teire Boggard. The debate was the most successful one we* have had this year, because the points on both sides were bettei sustained and the rejoinders were better. The judge's decision was given ir ; favor of the negative. The critic's report was very effi ciently given. The society then ad journed. We had as visitors the sixth and seventh grades and their teachers. Columbians Hold Called Meeting Monday afternoon, immediately af ter school, an important call meeting \ was held by the Columbian literary 1 Society for the purpose of electing commencement marshals. HESPERIAN LITERARY SOCIETY T e Hespeiian Literary Society held its regular meeting Friday after noon at one o'clock. . The meeting was called to order by the president after which a beautiful passage of Scripture was read by the chaplain. The Lord's prayer was then repeated by the Society. The roll was* called and minutes read by the secretary. The business of the meeting was then brought before the society. The commencement marshals from our society were elected, the chief marshal being Horace Johnson, and the assistants being Aries Isenhower and Randolph Dilday. "The good that I have derived from ' the Hesperian Literary Society" Lowell Powell. The critic's report was then given by Mr. Bain. He gave many con structive criticisms, which we will rerhember. Miss Gaddy then gave a talk ex pressing how she had^ynjoyed meet ing yith us. Mrs. Hayes stated that we had im proved very much since we organized into societies. Miss Jewell, our sponsor, gave a splendid-talk which was enjoyed by each member of the society which loves her dearly. A vote of thanks was given to Miss Jewell for her loving devotion and untiring help since she was elected sponsor Tor our society. We owe much of our succes to her, and will always remember her as a great worker and leader in our behalf. Visitors present were Mrs. Hayes, Misses Jewell and Gaddy, and Mr. Bain. This was the last meeting we will have this school term, but we hope to renew our work the the opening of next sesion. We wish to thank each teacher who helped u# in our work. We feel that without them our work would have been in vain. There being no further business the society adjourned. SCHOOL NOTES Misses Bessie Gaddy, Emily Gayle and Messrs. K. T. Raynor and T. R. Bain were the guests of Mrs. D. L. Myers Saturday evening. Candy was sold in the hall of the High School building last Tuesday, April 17th. The proceeds were de posited with the treasurer of the Co lumbian Literary Society. Miases Bessie Gaddy, Emily Gayle, Mina Holloman, and Louise Buffaloe were the guests of Mrs. Sam Vaughn at dinner Friday, April 20th. Miss Louise Buffoloe was the guest of her parents in Jackson Sunday af ternoon. ? Miases Emily Gayle, and Bessie Gaddy were the guests of Nellie Mc ? ? Keel laet Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. T. R- Bain was the guest of Mr. Columbus McKeel last Thursday night, April 19?h. We were very glad to have with us, on last Friday morning, April 20th, Mr. P. S. Vann of Chowan College to speak to the students especially the seniors, about the value of a college education. His talk was enjoyed and appreciated by all. Miss Mary Shields, Thelma Jewell and Emily Gayle were the guests of Mrs. I. Parker at dinner last Tuesday evening, April 17th. The Seniors of '28 will present their paly, "Borrowed Money" Friday ( night, April 27th at eight o'clock. ; Everyone is cordially invited to at tend. Admission twenty - Ave and I thirty-five eents. . Misses Mabel Claire and Mary Hog r gard were visitors in Aulander Sun , day afternoon. Misses Bessie Gaddy, Emily Gayle i and Mr. T. R. Bain were visitors in Harrellsville, Sunday afternoon. An eliminating contest for story ' telling, recitations and declamations was held in the school auditorium last I. Friday afternoon, April 20th. The ones winning were Bertha Coleson, Leonora Applebaum and Henry Mil ' ler Haris who will represent Ahoskie at Winton commencement during county commencement. Mr. K. T. Raynor was a guest of of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. McKeel Sun day at dinner. The singing class from the Oxford Orphanage gave a concert in the school auditorium Monday evening. RECEPTION IN HONOR OF SENIOR CLASS On Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Ernest Hayes, guests were de lightfully entertained by Alton Hayes at a reception given by him to his class mates, the Seniors of Ahoskie High School. The guests essembled at eight o'clock and were ushered into the presence of Mrs. Hayes by the host. After all had gathered, tally cards were distributed and each guest found his partner, then each one be came interested in determining which could be the most successful S-E-N I-O-R of the evening. Arthur Greene, Jr., was the fortunate mem ber at this time, and was awarded a very attractive senior hat in the class colors of lavendar and white, by the class mascot, Miss Trances Boyetee. The host then led the guests to the dining room, where a very delicious course of cream and cake was served. The room was most tastefully de corated with the class colors and flowers, tall 'white candles around the room, and four stately lavendar can dles on the table, furnished the only light, which' cast a softening glow over all. Each place was indicated by a dainty card, upon which was a tiny sweetpea, and two sweet peas were lying at each plate. Tiny purple baskets filled with mints in the class colors completed this, while the cen ter-piece, a beautiful arranged bou quet of sweetpeas, the Senior Class flower, shown in all their glory. The invited guests were as follows; Mioses Elizabeth Dilday, Carrie New some, Kate Brett, Sybil Myers, Viola Odom, Ina Mae Odom, Emma Woot en, Mary Sumner, Bessie Gaddy, Emily Gayle, Mina Holloman, spon sor ; Messrs. Thomas Baker, Arthur Greene, Jr., Cedric Leary, C. C. Ses soms, Greyson Mitchell, Spurgeon Is enhower, Lowell Powell, K. T. Ray nor, T. R. Bain. SENIOR SPONSOR ENTER. TAINS Last Friday evening at her home | on Church street, Miss Mina Hollo ? man, senior sponsor, was hostess at a beautiful reception in honor of the I members of the Senior class, and high S school faculty. The home had been elaborately decorated in lavender and ' white crepe paper, lavender and white | cathedral candles held in silver can 1 dle^tra, and baskets of violets. The ' lights were all shaded, and the glow of the candles shed a mellow radiance over the entire scene. Upon arrival each truest was met at the door by Mr. Horace Garrett, dressed in academic cap and gown, who gracefully represented the trad itional senior. The sponsor received in the parlor, and soon all were ask. ' ed to draw partners and assemble at the tables for "Progressive Senior." Mr. K. T. Raynor won first prize, a box of lavender stationery; Thomas Baker won the booby, a minature clown. { ? Next each guest was invited to si wheel of fortune whero fortunes were drawn. These were read aloud, cans ing much laughter and merriment. An appetising course of fruit salad was then served, each plate being gar nished with violets, and containing a raisin sandwich tied with lavender . ribbon, and a lavender basket filled with white mints. When each truest ? ' ; ?? .. . had been served, MUa Holloman gave a beautiful toast to the Seniors, which was warmly appreciated. Following this course came ? de licious course of cream and cake served with lavender napkiqs and decorated with violets. When each guest had been served, Thomas Bak er president of the Senior Class, arose and in a lovely poem toasted the sponsor, who is so dear to the class. At 11 o'clock the guests frose re luctantly and bade their hostess good bye, after voieing their sincere thanks for the splendid occasion. Those attending were: class mem bers; Ins Mae Odom, Mary Sumner, Emma Wooten, Sybil Myers, Eliza beth Dilday, Kate Brett, Carrie New some and Viola Odom; Thomas Bak er, Lowell Powell, Arthur Greene, Spurgeon Isenhower, Cedric Leary, C. C. Seseoms, Jr., Alton Hayes, and Grey son Mitchell. Faculty members; Misses Bessie Gaddy, and Emily Gayle, Messrs. K. T. Raynor and T. R. Bain. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION HOLDS LAST MEETING The Athletic Association of Ahos kie High School held its last meeting for this school year Tuesday of this week. Finances were discussed, bills that were due were ordered paid, and a short review of the successes of the year was taken. This is the first year we have had an athletic association and we congratulate ourselves that it has made good. We broke eyen, but just have. We wish to thank the patrons of this school and others who patronized our games, and gave do nations to our athletic fund. Ath letics have taken a decided boom in our school now, since the organiza tion of the athletic association. Hence we are proud of its success, and look forward to its organization again, when school re-open# in September. AULANDER DEFEATS AHOSKIE . In a game of baseball at Aulander Tuesday, April 17, Aulander defeat ed Ahoskie 2 to 1. The game was hard fought Ahoskie drew first blood?1 run in the sixth, on a hit by Greene, a walk presented to Burton, a stolen base by Greene, and scratch hit by Holiontan, scoring Greene. Aulander evened things up in the seventh when White was safe on a fumbwle, and a moment later he stole second. . He scored when Howard dropped a high fly. Aulander tallied the winning run in the eigth, when Herring lifted one over Leary's head, scoring White. Errors won the game for Auland er, two by Isenhower, one by Leary, and one by Howard. Aulander only made one. The pitching of Holloman was very creditable. Ordinary fielding' by his team mates would have given him a 1-0 shutout. Isenhower for Ahoskie got a double and a single out of four trips to the' j plate. Catcher Sessoms, of Ahoskie, was struck on the head two successive times by Dunning's bat. He was forced,to leave the game, medical at tention hieing necessary Ray Bur ton, Aulander local player, replaced him.
