elected general chairman. The Chau
tauqua will be here Friday, May 26th
and continue until the 80th.

Robert Mason, age 22, local AhoJ
kie negro, was arrested by Chief O.
W. Britton Saturday night as he was
in the act of helping himself to a load
of provisions owned by Will Garrett
also colored. Garrett, who lives on
the Winton road about three miles
from town, had his cart parked just
off Main street loaded with provisions
which he had purchased in town dur
in the day. While Garrett was absept
from, his cart, Mason was caught in
the act of making away with the toad.
Upon being arraigned before
Mayor Williams, Mason was ordered
to give bond for $75 for his appear
ance in Hertford County Superior
Court. Not being able to give the
required bond he was committed to

Parker, of Ahoskie, was solemnized
Saturday, May 5th, in the parlors of
the -Yarborough Hotel at Raleigh, N.
C., at aix o'clock In the evening. Rev.
Dr. T. W. O'Kelley, pastor of the.
First Baptist Church, of Raleigh, .of
ficiated. The parlors were beauti
fully1 decorated with pink ' floral
sprays and wax tapers.
The bride was charmingly gowped
in a navy blue traveling suit, with bat
to match, and carried a shower bqu
liesquet'of bride's roses and valley
, Mr. J. Mayon Parker, brother
of the groom, served as best man.
The bride is the attractive daughter
of Mr. and and Mrs. J. J. Buffaloe, of
Jackaon, N. C., and is a graduate of
East Carolina Teachers' College^ She
Is one of the most popular of th&
younger set in Ahoskie, having taught
in the Ahoskie High School during
the past yean The groom is a promi
nent young business man of Ahoslfie
and is well known throughout the
Roanoke-Chopra n section and the en
tire state. ' He is a,graduate of Wake
Forest College and is Ye Editor of

COMMUNITY DAY
The American Legion Community
Day, which will-be held in the City
of Suffdlk, on May 17th, bids fair to
be one of the moat delightful and aus
picious occasions which has ever been
held in Tidewater Virginia.
The festivities of the d*y. will open
at 12 o'clock by a big parade. In the
line of march will be the Suffolk mil
itary company, tKe American Legion
the Woman's Auliary of the Ameri
can Legion, school children of the
City of Suffolk, a number of attract
ive floats, and many other people and
things of interest.
The parade wil be followed by the
tournament, which will be held at
the grounds of the Four County
Fair, at 2 o'clock, at which time Gov
enor E. Lee Trinkle will deliver the
charge, to the knights, and the distin
guished guests will indlude Lieut.
Governor and Mrs. J. E. West, State
Comandex of the American Legion
and Mrs. E. E. Goodwyn, Congress
man and Mrs. J. T. Deal, Speaker of
the House ,and Mrs. R. L. Brewer,
Jr., Oeneral and Mrs. C. C. Vaughan,

Whitney P. Godwin, Master of Cere-J
monies and his pages, with the orator
of the evening, the queen of the
tournament and winning knight, the
maids and other participating
knights, Lieut. Gov. and Mrs. West,
Col and Mrs. E. E. Goodwyn, Con
gressman and Mrs. J. T. Deal, Gen
eral and Mrs. C. C. Vaughan, Mr. and
Mas. W; W. Townes, Mr. and Mrs.
C. E- Ashburner, and the Court Lad
ies and Gentlemen. After the grand
march, the cornation address will be
delivered, and the queen will be
crowned, after which the royal figure,
the quadrille and the Virginia reel
wil be danced. Then the dance will
be opened to al those desiring to par
ticipate.
The fee tor admission at the lour

men and the fee for ladies will be

nated by the American Legion for
the purpose of erecting a memorial
