Hertford County Herald I Published Every Friday by VINSON A PARKER Owners J. ROY PARKER-- Editor JAMES S. VINSON Mum* Subscription Price One Year ... $1.50 Six Months .7$ Three Months .40 Advertising Rates Very reasonable and made known on request Entered as seeond-elass mail matter February 26, 1910, at the postofflce at Ahoalde, North Carolina, under the Act of March 8, 1878. FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1923. AHOSKIE PROVIDES GOOD TOBACCO MARKET There is an element of grati ficatidn in the announcement that Ahoskie will* offer this year a tobacco market for all tobacco raisers; that - ware houses will be conducted here by both the auction men and the Tobacco Growers' Co-oper ative Association. It is no dis paragement to proponents of auction warehouses who are in a vast majority in this tobacco area for Ahoskie interests to welcome both sales methods here. Without attempting to dis cuss the merits or demerits of either system of marketing to bacco the HERALD is frank to offer approval of the broaden ing of the local market through a continuance of the co-opera tive market. It takes the posi tion that Ahoskie is primarily interested in building up its marketing facilities, the system notwithstanding. The season 1923 should be even more successful for all in terests concerned than have any of its predcessors. More and more Ahoskie is offering additional advantages to the producer who wants to market his crop successfully. Whether he be a member of the Co-ops or the rankest sort of auction warehouse advocate, Ahoskie says to him "Bring your tobac co here." With either kind of uroPoliAiioo Vi ova oil o ? ? u*?vuuv ttvx v) Ull wuvi ?U~ vantages being equal, there is none who is not given a market ing outlet for his tobacco. That this market does afford advantages of superior kind is readily apparent to the tobacco farmer who takes time to con sider. Extensive housing space, experienced warehousemen, and an .established market of known reputation are things to be considered and those are of fered by Ahoskie. Railroad facilities mean much to the producer when he begins to market. That, too, Ahoskie has. Steady growth in freight warehouse facilities, additional car sidings, and more platform space indicate a further boon to the shipper of produce of any kind. After all, the attitude of the business interests of the market town has much to do with the tobacco farmer bringing his product. A friendly, helpful, give and take spirit, and a cor dial relationship of mutual ben efit are elements that have . drawing power in most any kind of undertaking or situa tion. It is no different with the tobacco grower and the town merchant and trader. A per sonal invitation to market to bacco in Ahoskie, extended to every grower by Ahoskie per sons, brings more of the prod uct here. Trade days, induce ments calculated to profit both seller and buyer, have been found worth while for the av erage tobacco market town. Many are the ways in which Ahoskie can offer more than its bare natural advantages to the tobacco grower. Setecrib* to th? It has become a popular pastime for the reporter on this newspaper to use big scare headlines about the prog ress of this town and community. An interview with the news writer elicited the suggestion that I devote more time to construction and less to destruction., K-A-T Perhaps, he is right; no doubt, he is. But there is in all of us that which, it seems, must be emitted with more or less of critical tendency. Oftentimes, it is not so much that an utterancd has been made but more often'the spirit in which it is said. A little frank, open, and above board criticism if not misdirected makes all of us more apt to toe the line. The CAT does not mean to me rancous towards anyone; he does feel it a duty performed to "call" sonje per sons who disregard fair pipy and jus tice. K-A-T Now,don't let the paragraph above get next to your hide with such a sting and a prick that it makes you mad. I am not today in the business of specializing or becoming personal. That was intended for ail humanity within the bounds of this newspaper's territory. K-A-T Old Man Boll Weevil makes mighty fine time-killers for some of Ahoskie's benchwarmers, the gang that is too mpch smitten with laziness to take up reel and rod and go a-flshing. I went scampering up Main street Tuesday afternoon in quest of live stuff for my column, and the Boll Weevil dis cussion was the nearest I could scare up. K-A-T And that Boll Weevil talk had lit tle of the element of excitement in it In fact, it does not have enough to generate any fear of destruction within the minds of most folks, even the farmer himself. Tlie out-of-town person who has seen his ravages in other cotton territorv and the farmer of another neighborhood who has actually felt the disastrous results of Mr. Weevil's visit cannot persuade the average fellow hereabouts that there is any grave danger lurking in these I parts. And, in that particular, they are no different from people in other sections who have already gone though the' Weevil period. They don't pay half as much attention to warnings as they probably Will to mending their financial fendes after ho haa rnmp. -<? ? K-A-T SALLY is full of op timism today. ?rThe "boom" mentioned on page 1 sounds mighty good to her. All cats are hereby given notice that the addition of several new homes will provide more breeding places for the rat and mouse tribe?and a few more stom achfulls for the cats and kittens. K-A-T PATICA pats his foot and says amen. She goes one better and assumes the title of Peptomist?he has al ready looked the ground over and adds recommendation to the paragraph above. Which ia to say the differ ence between an optimist and the peptomist is that the latter does it while the optimist affably suggests that "some other fellow" do it. K-A-T TOM, JR., escaped the reporter again this week. He refused to be interviewed upon any subject. He's gone Ashing, and intimates ~ - that he may have a good "fish" story next week. K-A-T No, Adeline, a Russian barber shop is not where you get a quick shave. ' ' It isn't what others may think about you that brings the worry wrinkles; its what you know of your self. Some birds arc not satisfied with just telling a He, they want to prove it as well. An optimist is one who thinks matter* might have been worse if we hadn't begun to elect senators by popular vote. A great deal of alleged golden hair is plaited. "A gentleman" defines Prank Meadows is a man who can make you hate him and treat you so nice you are ashamed to cuss him." Sam Vaughn attributes his escap ing an aviation accident to his pres ence of mind. He has consistently refused to go up. Home is just a woman's sympathy surrounded by four walls. Try 'Em With Music (Courtroom Scene) The plaintiff: "He made me what I am today." - The beautiful star witness: "People call him 'Lovin' Sam,' he's the Sheik of Alabam." The defendant: "I picked a lemon in the garden of love." ? The prosecuting attorney address es the jury: "He's a devil in his own home town." Counsel for defense addresses jury: "For he's a jolly good fellow." The jury deliberates: "We won't go home until morning." The judge passes sentence: "She Was happy till she met you and the fault was all your own." ' Behind the bars: "Alimony Blues." If you keep as busy as a bee you will never get stung. A Casualty Hare \ There was a young maiden named Flo Whom a fellow took out to a show He thought she was fast, Now his flag's at half-mast, "For sitting behind was?her beau. A kiss on the cheek is like riding on the fender, of an automobile says G. C. Britton. Free Medical Advice: "Don*# buy thermometers in the summer?they are lower in winter. No, Archipelago, mints ar^not the only Life Savers. w Another good memory test is trying to remember whether and why fa mous women have husbands. A lot of Ahoskie girls can put it on their faces so as to produce the j popular two-toned effect. Famous Words Of Famous Men "You might at least be sociable!" "How much a quart?" "Do you think you'll crash?" "Now up at the house?" "We've got to stop, and let the en ! gine cool." "Now, do you have a match?" Maw Creek Says " Pa ain't never been what you'd call a ladies' man, but ever since we've been maried I've noticed he's inclined to be a lot more charitable towards poor, sinful women than he 'is toward poor, sinful men." A Mosquito Triolet He presented his bill, And I could not evade it. In valley, on hill, ' He presented his bill, With stinging ill-will So with blood, sir, I paid it. He presented his bill, And I could not evade it. The only trouble with Mr. Ford's new method of burning coal twice thinks Charlie Conger is that it will encourage a lot of second hand coal dealers to enter the market. _____ / According to the reformers, the rising generation is sinking. Ahoskie Brooking The Pair A well-known man was riding down i Main street in his Ford with one foot hanging out over the door. A small boy, noticing this, shouted after him: "Hey" mister! Did you lose you* other roller skate?" "I've dropped on a good thing," said the tree as it fell on the preach er. Time Changetk 'A hundred years ago today a wilder ness was here; A man with powder in his gun went forth to hunt a deer, But now the times have changed somewhat along a different plan; A dear, with powder on her nose, goes forth to hunt a MAN."
