Attorney Stanley Winborne and two children of Murfreesboro were visitors in Ahoskie last Saturday. While here they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roberts Jernigan. Mr. Kader R. Curtis, Superinten dent of Kinston City schools, and fa mily arrived in Ahoskie last week to spend some time with relatives here and at othr places in this section. Mesbrs. Clarence Perry and Lee v Parker were members ?f a party at Colerain Beach Monday afternoon. The party included a number of young men and ladies from Menola. Miss Christine Meadows of Kins ton is visiting Miss Margaret Cope . land this week. They were school ma tes at the North Carolina College for Women at Greensboro last session. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stokes have returned to Ahoskie, after spending several days en the northern markets wher Mr. Stokes was buying the fall and winter goods for Hoggard and ~ Stokes. H. Newsome this week. REVIVAL SERVICES A series of revival meetings will begin at the Ahoskie Baptist church the first week in September. Rev. E. J. Isenhower, pastor of the church, will be assisted in the meetings by a visiting minister. ' ? MINSTREL SHOW HERE On another page of this edition is an advertisement of a minstrel show to be given in the high school build ing next Monday night The newly organised Woman's Club is sponsor ing the show, the proceeds of which will go to the civic improvement fund, to be used for cleaning up the city cemetery and improvements. Al bert L. Baker, of Cincinnati, Ohio, an experienced minstrel man, is direct ing the home talent and will himself j also take a leading part. CURRENT GOES OFF TJie town electric light plant sus pended operations for several hours Thursday afternoon, while linesmen repaired wires which had been bro ken down by the heavy rains, causing short circuits in the system. The tel ephone wires fell across the electric light line on Main street near the 1 Manhattan Hotel. The af ternoon session began at half past two o'clock, with Mr. W. B. Strick land, Jr., of Scotland Neck, president of the district convention presiding. Business was despatched within an hour and a half, and at 4:80 the del egates left the meeting place to look about the town, wffich had dressed itself up for the occasion. Styong resolutions of thanks were unanimously passed by the conven tion, thanking the local Magnolia Camp No. 328 for the spread given them, and thanking Ahoslde for its entertainment. John H. Hall, of Aulander, was elected president of the next conven tion bodjr; fnd Aulander was chosen as the next convention town. The W. 0. W. district convention will be held there, Thursday, April, 18, 1924. ' ' . v S .* IBS&i Mr. Lather C. Williams, mayor of Ahoskie, was married, Saturday, Au gust 17, to Miss Hettie Hargrave, of Wakefteld, Va. The ceremony took place in the Monticello Hotel at Nor. folk at six o'clock that evening. Mr. and Mrs. Williams left immediately after the wedding for Washington, and other northern points. They will soon return to Ahoskie, and will make theie home temporari ly in the Manhattan Hotel. Mrs. Williams taught school in Ahoskie during the session of 1922 192S,.and already has made many friends here, al of whom are glad to welcome her return here as one of their number. Mayor Williams, a native of Ala mance County, came to Ahoskie sev eral years ago, after completing his education at Wake Forest College and the University of North Caroli-' na. He was superintendent of the Id eal school his first year here, after which he became associated with at torney W. W. Rogers in the practice of law. He later opened a law office here and has practiced independently since that time. He served in the World War, being one of the first men of the town and county to volunteer his services. At that tipje he was mayor of the town, and he now holds the same office. Since his return from the military service he has held this office by ap pointment, and is now serving his second elective term. He has also ta ken a leading part in educational af fairs of the town and community as well as being a worker in the churcln The marriage of this popular cou ple gives Ahoskie a unique place among small towns of the State and for that matter the whole country, in the record of marriages that have drawn upon the school faculty for the brides. Of the mine single lady teachers who were members of the 1922-28 faculty, five have wedded since the close of the school year. All have married local men except one. SPECIAL EDITION GETS FAVORABLE COMMENTS The HERALD'S Special Tobacco Edition published last week has focused the attention #f tobacco raisers upon the Aboskie market and has reacted favorably, to the ideas of desirable advertising held by business persons in and out of Ahoside. Direct results of this edition hgve already taken form in three letters received at this office, two from Bertie coun ty farmers, and one from a busi ness man of Norfolk, Va. Subscriptions - to Hertford county's purely local weekly newspaper have been coming in - steadily since last week, and the remitters add a' word of com mendation for the efforts being put forth to advahce {he interest of the Aboskie market and Ahos- . kie business. v Tobacco farmers are quick to respond to proper advances made to them by the Ahoside i Chamber of Commerce, which was represented in the edition by a full page advertisement It has started a steady stream of favorable talk about the Ahos ide market; it will mean increas ed sales on tobacco marehouse floors here. We quote one letter received Tuesday morning: "You deserve the heartiest con gratulations of Hertford Coun ty's eople 'on the splendid to bacco edition which you put out, Friday, August 17. It is thinks like these whicfy are bringing Hertford County to thte front ' The edition is newsy, well writ ten, and very snappily put up." This came from a resident of Norfolk and a leading business man Of that city. METHODIST MINISTER HAS GOOD MEETINGS Rev. S. T. Barber, pastor of the Ahoskie M. E. church, returned to his charge here last Sunday and preach ed two forceful sermons, after hav ing assisted in a revival meeting at Severn. The meeting held last,week, Reverend Barber says, was a splen did one. Large congregations attend ed and there was a goodly number .of professions, with about 15 per cent increase in the original number of members. He is at Colerain this week assist ing in another series of meetings at the Methodist church. Mr. Barber says "Tie meeting started off well; much better than I had hoped for." ReV. Mr. Barber was a former con ference evangelist residing in Greens boro, and has had mapy successful experience in evangelical work. He is now in constant demand at Metho dist churches in this section of the State.
