GASOLINE STATION TO NAME THE TOWN Bill Brewer who operates a gas ! eliae filling station on the side of the State Highway near the high school building has already grown tired of telling folks who stop at his place of business "this is Ahos Ide." The through motorists who pass his way are forever asking what town they are passing, since the State Highway signs along the route fail to mention Ahoskie. Brewer was growling about be ing bothered so much when one of the Chamber of Commerce di rectors overheard him.. The mat ter wo* reported to the directors of the Chamber at their regular meeting Monday night, and n mo tion was immediately passed to erect a large sign on top of the filling station, painting on both sides something like thisi "This Is i AHOSKJE". the thing was or tiered done and the sign will be in place within a few days. LOCAL BANKS DO ) HEAVY BUSINESS One of the bast karoautin of the ri*e and fall of prosperity ia found ia the banlu of aay commu nity; and for that roaaoa folk* usually consider the bankers esti mate of business conditions as aaar correct as it can bo safely arrived at. la Ahoslde and vicinity, tbe bankers say, tbere is more casb money now than in 1919, when the coin and its substitute paper cur rency was bulging out of every man's pockets. Last Saturday was tbe biggest day in tka history .of one of the local banks in tbe mat ter of deposits, the total being not far bo low a round hundred thous and dollars. There was a waiting line at the bank windows rar-t all day long; and those wait'ag did not leavo all the money ia the bank many of them taking the cash off with the m, to "salt" it away or to pay off existing debts. The month of October was like wise the biggest month in depos its at this bank. In fact, so gr at was the increase that it was actual ly necessary for the bank offiters to install a brand now filing sys tem for deposit slips. The old one would not bold them. Even .that never happened in 1919, when we were all young Henry Fords. STAMP FOR LITERATURE For weeks be had been illHin the hospital.
