MR. WAY AT RANDLEMAN. Prnf Way in his Fourth of July address on fluent ion at ltundleman spoke cleurly and forcibly. Wcgive a short synopsis: Three things are necessary to sue cess: (a) Education. (b) Character. (c) Perseverance. These three are as necessary to u community or town us to individuals. hwry youth ought to have high ideals study the lives and characters of great men. It is easy for a while to make a show, but rcul solid work is per formed only bv those who have made real, solid preparation for work. You can fool all the people a part of the time and part of the people all the time, but you can t tool all the people all the time, ion tsan be what you desire to be; f a TSimrod get you a gun and pack of dogs, if a dude get you a fine suit, a cocked hat, a single eye-glass and a gold headed cane and you are ready. If your ideal is an inventor, study Edison, or McCormick, or Morse, or Hello, or Marconi. It a teacher, study Horace Mann, or David Page; if a preacher, study Luther, know how to preach, what to preaoh, and be not afraid to preach the truth; if a business man, study the lives of the most successful business men. If yon have a desire to become great yon must remember that you must know a great deal in order to gratify that desire. -truncation is a broad, practical thing, not mere book-learning. I would not give a cent to know all the mathematics there is to know if I am not going to make any calcula tions. If education is good for one youth of good character it is good for all outlis of good character, and 1 am glad that there is an order in this country having as one of its funda mental principles the upholding of the creat public school svsleui of the United states, which system of schools is the only hope for educat- ng the masses. 1'eople of the south. especially in North Carolina, may not see jus' why the Junior Order takes this stand. They seem te think that the Public School System is Bafe, but I would remind you that there is a religious body in this country that is opposed to the pub lic schools, and the members of tlm body are veiy nunieroui. Character is more necessary than education. It is misfortune for a man of bad character to be educated n less his character is improved by Nobody respects a person who has no self -respect. Your word must be your bond. Three per cent, of our Congress men, 45 per cent, of our U S Sena tors, 83 per cent of our Supreme Court Judges, and 70 per cent, of our Presidents have been college- bred. Education is not a mere accumu lation of book learning. "To make simple things simpler, to make complex things loss complex, to take up the great problems of moral ity, industry, and government, and illuminate, so that the unlearned as well as the learned mav understand and apply wisdom's ways, is educa tion." Will-iiower, energy aud well- directed enthusiasm must be added to education and character before SMCcess is achieved. Learning is of no service unless used and used for good. Men of strong will-power and limited education outstrip those of magnificent book-learning and weak ill-power. When I say use your education 1 mean use it correctly. A horse is a good thing, but not when hitched to the wrong end of a wagon. A hand saw is a good thing, but not to shave with. A carving-knife is al right, but you ought not to slash your neighbors with it. Applied nowledge is power, misdirected knowledge is harmful. Learn now to put your ideas to gether in awpractical manner xou must hav a strong will and use it for good "Happy are ye that know these things, if ye do thorn." MARRIAGES. If yon want to increase your strength you must add to and net take from the physical. In other! words, the food that vou eat must be digested, assimilated and appropriat- j ed by the nerves, blood and tissues before being expelled from the in testines.
