In the community there are merchants, manufacturers and farmers, all of whom have some property. The bank helps these, people in various ways. . . At certain seasons of the year the merchant may find a large number of people owing him, and his stock of goods in need of re plenishing. Instead of crowding his customers to pay, he accepts their notes for sixty or ninety days, takes these to the bank and guarantees their payment when due by endorsing them (writing his name across the back) and asks the bank to lend him the money that he needs for the purchase of the new goods. The bank having the money that depositors have left for safe keeping until they need it lends the merchant the money he requires charging him interest for its use. The farmer is helped by the bank in the same way. In the spring he may need money to buy seeds or farming implements so he goes to the bank with his notes as security and gets the money needed for carrying on his business of farming. By the time his notes fall due he has harvested the crops and having sold a portion of sama is ready to pay his notes, having, if prices are good made the in terest on the money borrowed and a handsome profit besides. At other seasons the manufacturer is in a similar condition to the merchant. He needs to purchase raw material trom which to make the manufactured product, and also money to pay the wages of his employe, so the manufacturer goes to the bank and like the merchant giving the bank security borrows the needed funds for carrying on his business. By these means the bank helps every work ingman in the community. It puts money into circulation and makes it possible for labor to earn what it should. If it were not for the bank the manufacturer would be compelled to hire fewer men, being able to employ only such as he had money for the payment of their wages. Merchants, and how the banks may serve them For information of any kind call on or address The Wachovia I;6at.n and Trust Gompny, Seed time and harvest. How banks serve the farmer High Point.
