Malcom Whitfield spent Sunday and Monday in Asheboro a guest of his sister Mrs. W. C. Hammond. He left Monday afternoon for his home at Lumberton. Hal S. Lewis was in Asheboro Monday and Tuesday returning from Farmer where he spent Sunday with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Lewis. Mrs. G. G. Hendricks and child ren, Joseph and Lilian, are spend ing the week at Jackson Springs. They left Monday accompanied by little Mi3S Mabel Spoon. , Elihu Mendenhall, one of the oldest and most prominent Quakers in the State, is critically ill with pnsnmonia at his home at Deep River. He is over 90 years old. f. T. Bird has moved to the dwelling house recently vacated by Mr. Rnfns Betts on Salisbury street. Mr. Betts has moved his family to Biscoe, where he has a position in a foundry and machine shops. Mrs. Hattie J. Herbert Steed, of Steeds, left this week for West Raleigh to enter the A & M College where he will this year complete the course iu that in stitution. Millard Allred, of Ramlleman has accepted a position with the Southern Railway, and arrived yes terday to enter upon his duties in the Asheboro depot. Mrs. J. P. Boroughs and children are attending the special meetings be ing conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. H. Biggs, at the Methodist Pro testant church at Why Not. Mrs, T. J. Moffitt and two child ren, Tom and Elizabeth, left last week for Texas. Mr. Moffitt is en gaged in the mercantile business at Mineral Wells, where they will make their home. Five hundred people attended the drawing for the buggy at Morris-Scarboro-Moflitt Co's. Saturday and in the entire crowd not one could be found who did not have one or more tickets in the box. Several people went to Jackson Springs Monday to spend this week, Among the number, were- Mrs. W. E. Swain aud son, Master John; Mrs. G. G. Hendricks and children-, Mr. M. C. Spoon and daughter, Mabel, and Mr. W.'A. Coffin. The Ladies' Aid Society of the M. E. church offers for sale two double arm chandeliers which were recently replaced by electric lights in the church in Asheboro. Parti culars can be had by addressing Mrs. W. H. Moring or Mrs. Annie Robins, of Asheboro. Miss Daisy Crowson the efficient dressmaker, who has been sewing at the Asheboro Department Store daring the spring and summer months, has gone home for a few weeks, for a vacation. Trinity, Aug. 10. A large crowd attended the educational rally here today. Addresses were made by prominent citizens. Congressman R. N. Page electn fied his audience with a spirited ad dress on education. The needs of the hour in education were clearly presented with convincing effect. He emphasized the need of trained men for the better and higher life and gave some convincing illustra tions. He paid a glowing tribute to the work of the school at one time and said that here was a future for it yet. At 1'30 a picnic dinner was spread on th'- long tables. This was followed by a watermelon feast. The Asheboro Nightingale Hand furnished the music. Amoug those on the rostrum were Prof. Pegram, Dr. W. G. Bradshaw, Dr. Dread Pea cock, Dr. Wood, Dr. Detwiler, Dr. Turrentine, Congressman Page, Mr. Hargett and others. Solicitor W. C. Hammer was ex pected to attend and make an address but being detainedby the special term of court at Salisbury, he sent his re grets and greeting to the school and the attendance. Reddick and Miss Norma, spent Saturday in Thomasville. The High School campus has been cleaned off and beautified pre paratory to the opening of school. The authorites are expecting a large number of students. The school has a good faculty and is in a much better linancial condition thau it has been iu several years. Success to it. After dinner the Ladies Aid Society served cream and cake on the campus aud realized a good pro fit. The young people enjoyed a game of ball late iu the afternoon. Miss Eva Hekman returned last week from an extended visit to Kioar3 Mountain and other places. She has accepted a position in the Graded schools of Durham. Mrs. E. O. Htown returned to Wilkes boro last week. Mrs.'E. P. Albea returned to Win ston after a week's visit to rela tives. Mr. E. R. Carr returned from the Springs much benefited. Miss Bessie Parker is on an extend ed visif to her aunt in Faison since the death of her grand-father, Mr. limes whose welcome visits to Trin ity will be greatly missed. He made many frieds here and in the county who will regret to learn or his death. Prof. Pegram preached an excel lent sermon bunday at 11 o clock in the absence of the pastor. Mrs. Clarke and Mrs: Whitehead and daughter, sisters of Mrs. Hund ley returned to Mississippi on Mon day, after spending some time nere. TOTAL ASSESSMENT IS $76,050-548. Corporation Issues Assessment Against . Kailroads, Telegraph and Tele phone Companies. The Nurth Carolina Corporation Commission yesterday issued to 'the various counties of the State a state ment of the total amount of the ap portion men tjto each oaunty of the general assessment against railroads, telegraph, telephone, street railway, electric lights and gas light compan- lesthese being the amounts on which thS vaiious counties are to assess taxes. The entire assessment for all the counties amounts to 70,050,548, and the aggregate of the amounts in the apportionment is about $70,000, 000, as th excess is listed in the counties. Besides this there is a piivilege tax paid directly by the railroads into the State treasury, which amounts to about $18,000. Randolph's assessment amounts to $015,Cb,).87. Cedar Falls Items.
