ruilfuis to fulfil, at the eailiest period,

toiy proof of which may be fouiul in ihe.
muiiber of treaties which have been held
for that j)uri)os', the quantity of laiids
which liave been actpiired, and the price
paid. In fact, such has been the solici
tude of the go\erumenl, that, but little
regard has been had to the price, when
ever il has been found possible lo obtain
a cession of lands to the slate. 'I'he
price given has far exceeded that which
lias ever been given in other purchases
fi om the Indians.
“ I feel satisfied that it may be asserted,
ilh confidence, that no opportunity of
exlingtiishing the Indian title, ‘on reii.-
sonable terms,’ has been neglected to ba
embraced by the United Stales.”
These are facts whicii recjuire no com
ment. And what do they demonslrale ?
Clearly, in the first place, the entire in-
correclness o'.‘ “ the Iiistorical sketch” giv
en by the Enqtiirer. In the second j)Iacp,
they as clearly demonstrate that the Uni
ted States have always felt the force of
the obligation arising out of the com
pact of IH02 ; and in the third place* they
demonstrate with equal clearnes.s, thut
success, to a very great extent, and at
immense and unusual cost, liave attend
ed upon their continued eflbrts tocxecule
it.
In the same spirit of solicifude to per
form their obligation in good faith, the
United States ai)pointed, during the last
winter. Commissioners to treat for the
remaining iatids owned by the Creek.s
within the limits of Georgia.* Thi.s
last eilbrt resulted in the recent faiaous
Treaty of the Indian Springs. Upon this
Trcaltj I shall say nothing. Time will dis
close every thing connected with it; and
the competent authorities will sit in just
judgment upon it. It is doubtless a mat
ter which will command the attention of
the C'ongress, a body from which the
weak and helpless, because they are so,
(if they have done notching lo ftn feil all
claims to its consideration,) can have no
thing to fear ; whilst the strong and pow
erful cannot rest any pretensiq^is to si)e-
cial I'.ivor, for being so. Whatever the
decision may be which that auf^fust body
may make upon the Treaty, the good
people of the Uniieil Slates may rest «a-
tisfied, will be according to the conncih
of wisdom and the dictates (jf justice.
It is certainly a most desirable object,
in addressing the petjple upJii subjecls
which concern their interests, and the
honor of their government, to keep enn-
itor always in view ; and where ih* jna-
