It seldom happens that the hopes we cherish ol the future are realized. The path of life, in the pros pect, appears smooth and level enough, but when we come to travel it we hnd it all up hill, and generally rough enough. The journey is a laborious on»', whether poor or wealthy, bigb or low, we shall lind it so, to our disappointment, iftv»> have built on any other calculation. 'I'u endure what is to be endured with as much cheerfulness as possible—and tu elbow our way as easily as we can through the great crowd, hoping for lit tle, yet striving for much, is perhaps the true |)Ian. But, Don't be discouraged, if occasion liy you slip down by the way, and your neigh bors tread over you a little ; in other words, don’t let a failure or two dishear ten you—accidents haj)pen, miscalcula tions will sometimes be made; things will often turn out differently from our expectations, and we may he sufferers.— It is Worth while to remember that for tune is like the skies in April, some times cloudy and sometimes clear and fa vorable ; sometimes those who have long stood before the world are very rotten al the core. From sources such as these you may be unexpectedly deceived; and you will naturally feel sore under such d( ceptioiis ; but to these you must be- (ome used; if you fare as most of the people do, they will lose their novelty be- ibif you grow grey, and you w ill learn to trust men cautiously. It would be folly to despair of again seeing the sun, be cause lo-day is stormy, so it is unwise to sink into despondency when fortune frowns, since, in the common course of hings, she may be surely expected to smile again. And again— Don*t be discouragtd, if you are deceived in the people of the world. It often hap pens that men wear borrowed characters; as well as borrowed clothes. Examine them closely, before you allow them great opportuuiiv to injure you. Don't be discouraged under any circum- stcuces. tio steadily forward. Rather i (insult your own touscieiii'y, than tl^e ojiiiiions of men, though the last is not to be disregarded. Be industrious, be fru- t;a!, t)e honest; deal in perfect kiitdnei,s with all that come in your way, exercis ing a neighborly and obliging spirit in your whole intercourse, and if you do not prosper us rapidly as any d‘ vour neighbors, depend upon it you will be We have been requested to notice the proposals of James Thacfier, M. Denoon, his foreman. It is said, that they dined togelher >es- terday, in the upper room of IVl’Naught’s. house ; the ap[)rentices in the shop then ditied ; and M’N. who had retired alone into another room, contiguous to the di ning room, sent for Daniel Denoon (his foreman.) and as soon as he had entereti the room, it is said that M’N. shot hini in the abdcinen with a |)isiol ; aiui it is also said that M’N. discharged another pistol, which grazed his own eiuek, and drew blood. When the persons, alarmed by the discharge of the pistols, entered th-e room, tliey were both found lying on Iheiloor; the unfortunate Denoon mor tally wounded, and M’Naugbt not seri ously hurt. Denoon lingered for sever al hours, anil died, last evening, about 4 o’clock : before his dissolution, he was iu the most excruciating agony, but gave, as it is said, a statement like the above. 'Ve understand, that M’Naught describes it to have been a duel between them, in which he was wounded and D. fell. Young Dtyioon was raised as an ap[)renti. e by M’Naught: he was an accomplished workman, and was al)out to se» up in bus iness for himself. Dili'eteni motives are assigned for the act ; this among others, that M’N. was averse to have so skilful a competitor in the same line of business with nimself. The impulse is as extra ordinary, as the act attriljuted lo .\1’N» is deplorable.
