Ai).\.ms, in An son, being anxious to show their willing- Hcss to respond to the sentiments expres- .sed and published by the friends of the \VM. F. SMITH, i>a:,-tlary. Cop;jcr.—A discovery has been made in Ashe County, of a bed of Copper Ori^ a specimen of which has been sent to us, and may be examined at this ofiice. The s[)ccimcn is very rich ; and if the whole bed be of the same ()uality, it will indeed be a mine of wealth. We regret lo learn,—and the regret will be generally atul deeply felt,—that upon investig-aiion,a reported defalcation exists in th»* Treasury to the amount c;f S('!.\000 ! e cannot, however, believe that this deficiency is real—there must be some error—and we indulge tlie hoj)*' that further examinations will detect it, and remove the cloud which now, I'or the first time, hangs over the integrity of the late Treasurer. It is with reluctance we iTiention this unexpected and unpleasant development; but i!ie reported defalca tion in the Treasury has gone abroad, nd “rumor, with her hundred tongues,” will magnify Sc distort it: it is Ijest, theicfore, that the simple fact should be laid before the public, with the suggi siion, that furth er and stricter investi^aiion may set evei y thuig right. That such will be the le- sul*, we cannot but entertain a confident hope. Comptroller.—Mr. James Grant has been elected Comptroller, on the 12ih balloi- ling, beating Mr. Henderson some 12 or 13 voles. Mr. Grant is from ihe FaihI— was supported as the Eastern candidate —consequently a ciliztu of the Weiit could expect nothing less than defeat. The people of \’irginia are overcom ing tljcir jjrejudices against the encour agement aiul prourdion of Munujhciun^.
