^i*“ ri)c. oiSARSorTS! •i'itksDAY, JANUARY 1. ,1828. \Vc leurn from Raleigh, that the Le- rslnturc will not, probably, adjourn be fore next Saturday. Nothing of nauch general importance has yet been done. The foreign news, in this week^s pa- ,cr, 'vill be read with great interest.— more decisive victory was never gai ned, than that achieved by the allied Reet; and although it was attended with , .rrent sacrificc of lives, yet the whole r'lristtno world will rejoice, as it secures i.e salvation of Greece. Other impor- ant consequences, too, will result from i; Lilt of these, we can only conjecture, 'he (iownfal of the Turkish Empire in ■jr.,rope, as one of them, is by no means .T.probablo. We havo received the proceedings of i tV'i'Administration Convention held in llai»'igh on the 20th ult. for the purpose of fonning an Electoral 7’icket for this St.ite ; but too late for .publication in tliis week’s paper. The meeting was highly re^pcctablc, both as to talents and numbers ; ttiirtom out of the fif- 4crn K!ect^)ral Di>lricts into which the Jtato divided, being represented.— Gaston addressed the Convention ilia n«at and appropriate speech ; and a \ fomniiltoe was appointed to prepare an to the people of this State, and have 10,000 copies of it [)rinted. The friends of the Ailniinistration in this Slate have no cause to despond.— aud zeal, combined with the jfoo j cause in which they are engaged, v.-ill ) ot enable them to triumph. Congress.—Mr. Barbour’s resolu tion, directing the Committee of Wnys ami .Means to inquire iiito the expedien- rv of selling the Slock owned by tlie Guvcrnmenl of tin’ United ^':ates in the P)ank of the U. Slate'^, was rejected in the House of Reprost-ntatives on tlie 21st ult. The vote was taken by Yeas and Na\s ; when only votrd in fa vor of the rcsolulio:i, ai.d 17j against it! ongvcsq wLicl) passed the abovcinentinncd act; and yet, at this lute day, we find i^rave se nators, anil would-be-statcsnifu denoLmcinj-- their acts an unconitilutiunal, and virtually cltai- fflnjf the framers of the constitution citht-r with delihorate perjury, or with ignorance of the ■ neaning of their own writing-! fan any thin^ be m%irc absurd! The public mind, howcv r, is becoiXinff more enhghtencd on this subject; the mists of prejudice are f. st fading’ aw ;»y ;— and we U)oic on tlie late proceedings in tlie U - gislatures of :«outh-Chrolina and I’lLorj^ia as tlie desperate, but expiring efuirts of a party, small in numlteTs, but powerful in wealth, to main tain their ascendency, at the exijense of the welfare of the people, of the vital interests of the country. This aristocracy will bo liumbled, and the causc of the country will triumjjh. From Kentucky, we learn that, on the 3d day of the session, the House of Uepresentatives was fortunate enoui^h to sucreed in making choice of a Spea ker. Of the equally divided votes on tl.e first day of the S^^ssion, our readers are apprized. On the second day, three more trials were made to elect a Speak er, with the s;»me results, lielore tlie third balloting, Mr. Ward, one of the candidates, was withdrawn, and J. S. Smith taken up in his ))laoe. On the morning of tlie third day, one or two absent members having come in, Mr. Smith was elected Speaker, having 49 votes to Mr Hlaokburn’s 4S. Mr. Smith is w ll ionuMnl)ered hero, as having been a representative in the 17th Conirress, and having inade many friends, who, without itupiiring, very particularly, whereabouts he is in the confhct of party, wish him well, and will be glad to licar of his success in life. N(i t ionnl hi telligcn cer. ar.'l no extravsg^rt Admitiislration suc- ('i*d the present, we may aniicipatc, that ,n cij>ht years more, ihe whole of our ,!nblic debt will be t'Xiinguished. We jliall then have an annua* expenditure, not exceeding; thirteen millions ; and o( ^his a{>grei;aio, as now, some millions will be applied to the purchase of real I'stute, the making; of good roads, clearing nf harbors and rivers, and the other dis- ’lursfnients referred to by the Secretary of the 'I'reusury, as those “lor which eqnivaletits remam, that for the m(jsl jiari, are of permanent value to the na lion.” It is> not prohablc that there will he any diminution of our revenue,. Our incouie, therel'ore, supposing it to be, as now, about 23 millions, will exceed (Mir annual expenditures, l)y about ten mill ions revenue wili then become a sul)jcct ol discussion, and sei-ious dinkulty. A n aiojt compi isint^ so vast, almost illimitable a territory, and so numerous u population, after surmouniing tlie dati- i^ers and expendilur. -i of two wars, a^ the ap^e of little more than half a century, outofdchl^ pursuini^ its rapid progress to ! power, and embarrassed hy a surplusage of revenue, vvUl present a political phenomenou, which the hisloi y >l mod ern times cannot pai allel. bile we see the most we:iUhy and powertul na- liotis of I'urope bending under the bur- d(Mi of public debt, and sli uggling'in vain to extricate themseivcs from its pressure, we alone shall march onward wiih alight and elastic tread, 'he envy and admira tion of the old aristocracy ol Lurope. Yet, wiih all ibis brigiitness of pro spect bctoie us, we find nicn, calling themselves statesmen, circulating gloomy ideas of our situation, talking of corrup tion and prolligate expenditures, pro- jihesying poverty and ruin, and suggest- ing parsiinotiy and niggardliness as the only preventi\t’b against premature de struction. Juitrnal. n the sfajjfs, throufjh this town, from Martlia’s Vitieyard lo Boston market, within five weeks j)ast; in additioii to which, very constihrable (jtiantiiics have been sent (o that market, during the same period, from this town and iis vi cinity.” Smlson.—.^sno further advicc has as yet been received, the account of the ariest of Sncleon near Qurhec, falls of course to the ground. Tiie VermoiU Editor who first published the report, should call up on his informant for an explanation. I’UKSIDKNT’S MKSSAGE. [From the Albany l).iily Advertiser.] This i.nuual expose of the alT.tirs of the The application' of this excess of nation appears lo have given very gener- '■ al satisfactioti.—Indeed, it is scairely possible t() conceive why it should not, foi we learn l>y it that our internal cone ei ns. are highly prosperous, and that our for eign relations were never on a lietter foot ing. Surely, as a people, we have tin most abundant cause of rejoicing, tor tin* blessings which are bcstoAcrl upon us, with an unsparing hand, atul t« thank God that our lives hav(‘)»ei n last in pleas ant places.—Yet, with all this pro'iperi- ty '.urrounding tis ; witl\ all the blesMng-', both s|)iritual and temporal, th.it are showered upon us ; if we are to believe the croaking of demagognes, we are up on the v(‘i ge of national ruin, and tlie ii i)crties which were purcha-'Cd with the blood of our fathers are about lo b*‘ swep' from us forever, unless we put downtnu present rulers, and elevate iu their places others whom they shall dictate.
