HE NEVER HAD A HOME. On tliy h.trp. Oh! lonely wanderer, Thou tifclat wake a strain of home, And its echo ever lingers, In the hearts of those who roam. Oh! met h inks thy soul was pining, When thou breathed that strain of light, For a home where love was twining Round the walls its roses bright. Thou didst see a cottage lowly, Nestling 'mid the forest trees. O'er it climbs sweet flowers holy, Rocked bv summer's penile breeze. And the wind's low voice came Stealing, From the cottage flowery de.ll, And across thy heart was sweeping On its string?; a tear-drop fell. And thaf mournful tear was falling, For a home that ne'er was thine; While thy lonely heart was sighing "Oh! sweet home, that thou wort mine." When other hearts its scenes are leaving. Widely on the earth to rove; Each successive step is weaving Links within the coil of love." For affection's chains extending, Ever as thev onward roam: But no chain of love was wending W ith thy heart from happy home. "Home, sweet home," what pathos lingers, j Round that soul-inspiring strain: Wanderer, ne'er shall earth's dominions, Echo notes like thine agaiu. ODE BY IIOWAIUJ IL CALOWJEIX. Prepared for and sung at the Masonic J Banquet in Columbia on Saturday evening 27th ult, I Far in the twilight of old Time, Fair Mason rv her life beran: And saintly deeds and rites sublime In even? age, in every clime, Thro' her were given to man.
