WSEIta DEMOCRAT, CHARLOTTE, UST. C. f 0 1 1 H 0 A 6 GO FOB THE RIGHT. BY W. M. MARTIN. Though beauty entice you with laughter and smiles, And strive to ensoarevo with charm and with wiles Oh, pasH then by lightly, their power deride, And ge lor the right, whatever betide. Tho' wealth may allure you with silver and gold, The strength of vonr man hood must never be sold. Jiid riches avauiit ye, with power and pride, And go lor the right, whatever betide. Tho' power oppose you with strength and with might Oh, ne'er be disheartened, tho' hard be the fight. Oh, never be conquered, nor ne'er turn aside, But go for the right, whatever betide. In archives of glory your name be enrolled, Jn song and in story your brave deeds be told, Along with t!.: heroes who fought and who died. Who went for the right, whate'er might betide. FALL FASHIONS. A New York correspondent says: The principal feature of the fall styles is the ex treme brilliance of coloring and the costliness of the materials used in this respect. A great dif ference is observed between the present and preced ing seasons. Last fall anything would do provided it "was cheap enough; now, on the contrary, our merchants find the greatest demand is for their choicest fabrics. A perfect mania appears to exist for plaids, in very hitrh colors; and plaid velvet is a principal ac cessory on nearly all fall bonnets. With the rage for plaids, another fashion has been introduced, bringing into conjunction two colors never before permitted Bide by side, but which is now consider ed the very height of hi motte. This is a brilliant shade of green and bright dark blue, alternating in square blocks. They form the "42" plaid the pet plaid of the fashionable world indicating the co lors, of course, of the 41 regiment (Scotch), after wh-.m it is named. This plaid is imported in very rich silks for dresses, cross-barred with black vel vet, ami in the form of velvet makes a supurb bor der for black velvet mantles. For winter bonnets, velvet is the only material used in Lyons, terry, spotted and imperial, and the most elegant styles are in a single, or a contrast of two solid colors. The decorations are simple but exquisite and extremely distinguished; rare coif fures and burins of lace being very much used, and the flowers or feathers only slightly added here and there, consisting of the rich tropical kinds, made with the rare delicacy of Parisian art, which almost transcends nature. Small figured black silks, with the ground very thickly covered, are considered extremely elegant; they are also imported superbly brocaded in colors. A few robes in pale lavender have been received, with flounces decorated with bouquets of flowers. brocket upon a white ground, terminating in rich fringe. A very beautiful novelty in evening dress sdks is of plain blue, green, white or straw-colored silk, with a donbl skirt, the upper one of which is covered with a rich lace pattern in velvet or broca ded satin. '1 his reaches nearly to the bottom, where it is enclosed in a splendid festooned border, which also extended at intervals up the skirt, sepa rating it info stripes. A bonier to match accom panies the tobc to trim the waist and sleeves. l'arasols and sun umbrellas are now replaced by the most charming little sun shades, in solid colors; gee li lavender, brown, and drab, ornamented with a border of swansdown or marabout, dyed the same shade as the silk. The handles are very short, and the tops round and flat, with centres ot glass or enamel. Shawls and Cloaks Tiik "Balmoral" SlIAWI.. The "mantle" shawl, with the lower cor ner rounded, is the novelty of the season, and the Balmoral is the prettiest we have seen of this style. It is composed of a new material in black and white cheek called '-basket" cloth, very soft, thick and warm. A deep double border of blight plaid velvet is attached, and terminates in a thick fringe of goats' hair. The most stylish garment for fall, especially for young ladies, is the imtomaisc, called in this style, the "Princess Frederic." It is a basquiue of very graceful and elegant shape, w hich fits every form, and imparts a certain air of dainty eoqnetrie which is wonderfully attractive. The material is dark, glossy cloth, ornamented with a border of dark, rich plaid velvet on the ample drooping sleeve and rather deep-pointed collar. Wholk Potatoes vs. Eyes fob Seed. An English paper the Ipswich Express, gives the result of an experiment lately made to ascertain what would be the difference in yield where whole potatoes were used or the ey es alone, and reports thus: "A trial has been made in the vicarage garden Coggshali, of potato eyes against whole potatoes, on perfectly equal terms, a row of each side by side a certain number of whole potatoes were sown a yard apart, the eyes of the same number of potatoes, of the same sort, were sown at the usual distance equal care taken, in all respects, that the trial might be fair. The result, as shown a few weeks back, was that the whole potatoes produced in weight more potatoes, but the excess of weight was just equal to the weight of potatoes from which the eyes had been taken, which potatoes had gone into the kitchen for dressing; so that, as far as this experiment goes nothing is g due I in sowing whole potatoes." m An Ethiopian Compliment to Woman. "Jey may rail agin women as much as dey like, but dey can't set me agin dem. I hab always in my tjfe found dem to be fust in lub, fust in a quarrel, fast in de dauce, fust in expense, fust in de ice eream saloon, and de fust best, and de last in de sick room. What would we poor debils do widout dem? Let us be born as young, as ugly, and as helpless as we please, and a woman's arm am open to receibe us. She it am who gubs us our fust dose of castor oil, and puts cloze 'pou our helplessly naked limbs, and Cttbbera up our foots and toeses in Ions flannel petticoats; and it am she, as we grow up, who fills our dinner-baskets wid doughnuts and apples as we start to school, and licks us when we tears our trotna." At a social meeting of his fellow-church members, among other things each member was relating his causes for joy and sorrow, when, Mr. said: "In my family of children I have much cause to joy, and also much to distress me. There is my son, , a good, reverent and dutiful boy; but there is my sou Hill; he is an audacious scamp." He left his poor grey-headed father many a day ago, and it has been a long time since 1 have heard from him: and when I last heard from him he was way up the Oaleners, a raftin' saw-logs, plaviu' seven up and hoss-jacing, but thank the Lord" he is mukino minify by the trip. Ain't he sister?" "Yes he is, and no mistake. A conscientious person affirms that he once in his life beheld people "minding their owu business." This remarkable occurrence happened at sea, the passengers being "toosick" to attend tu each other's concerns, i Makuyinu fob. Money. A gentleman lately inquired for a young lady of his acquaintance. "She is dead," very gravely replied the person to whom he addressed his inquires. "Is it possible? I never heard of it what was the disease?" "Vanity" returned the other; "she buried herself alive in the arms of an old fellow of seventy, with a fortune, in order to have the satisfaction ot a golden tomb." When Dr. A. and Sergeant A. were walking arm in arm. a wag observed to a friend: "Those two are just equal to one highwayman. "Why so?" was the response. "Because," rejoined the wag, "it's a lawyer and a doctor your money or your life." What is the difference between a duck with one wing and a duck with two? It is merely a difference of a pinion. A person reading the funeral services at a grave : forgot the sex of the deceased, and asked one of the mourners an Lmeralder, "is this a brother or a sister?' "Xaither, replied Pat, "ounly a cousin." "In my fertile country," said a Leicestershire man, "you could turn a horse into a field new mown, and the next morning the grass would be grown above his hoofs." "Pooh! that's nothing," O a cried a Yorkshire man. 'lou may turn a horse into a field in Yorkshire, and not be able tojind hint iti jt iiio r nut j.
