UP AND DOWN. "
HVhen the sun of prosperity's shining,
- f Aod a man's growing richer each day
Vheo in case and co:ui'urt tliinio,
And golden success crowns Lis woy
flow friends will then flock about him,
13ut if fortune should happen to frown,
How quickly he'll get the "cold shoulder,
And be "kicked because he is down."
How kindly the world will smile on him
. l;When life with successes abound;
How cordially, blandly, 'twill greet him
As in pleasure he's riding around;
Uat then let reverse o'ertako him,
And his friends both in country and town,
Have not a kind sentence to cheer him,
Unt will "kick him as soon aa he's down."
Xet a man get position or wealth,
Matters not if by intrigue or fraud
The world nod approvingly at him,
And his acta it will loudly applaud.
What though he may be a great villain !
: With the simple, tho wise and the closvn,
While he's up. he's a "tip-top fellow."
liut they'll kick him if ever he's down.
When a man has plenty of "greenbacks,"
And he's "healthy and "festive and guy,"
He'a countod a "bully good chom," then,
And the crowd approves all he may say.
Hut just let him lose all his treasures,
Perchance, too, his health may be gone,
JQe'U get to be nobody quickly,
And sure to be "kicked when bo's down."
Oh! when will mankind bo less solfbh?
I wonder if 'twill evor bo thus:
That we'll love to do to each other
- As we would have them do to ru-?
And if in adversity's ocean,
We are sinking and ready to drovrn,
"Thrice blensed be the friend whoso devotion
Will help a man up when he'.s down.

Journal of Medicine publishes the following re
ceipts for preserving tbe colors of muslin and
calicoes, when washed, which may -te of use to
Uie ladies : -
' A large handful of bran, added to tho waters
in which muslins are washed, will assist in fasten
ing their colors. It renders the water , soft, and
the addition of soda is not necessary.
Those of our readers who purchase calicoes of
lad colors; that is, colors that will not hold, can
easily remedy tho matter by soaking the goods
in boiling water, strongly impregnated th com
mon salt. Let the preparation be two or three
pints of water to two or thteo gills of salt, and
while at white heat, soak your calico. The ex
periment cost? nothing, and works like a charm.
