Be a Woman. Oft I've heard a gentle mother, As the twilight hour begin, Pleading wiih a son on duty, Urging hiw to be a man. But unto her blue-eyed daughter, Though with love's words quite as ready Tobta she out the other duty "Strive my dear, to be a lady." What's a lady ? Id it something 3Iade np of hoops, and silks, and airs, L'ged to decorate the parlor, Like the fancy rings and chairs Is it one that wastes on novels Every' feeling that is human ? If 'tis this to be a lady, 'Tis not this to be a woman. Mother, then, unto your daughter, Speak of something higher far Than to be mere fashion's lady "Woman" is the brightest star. If you. in your strong affection, Urge your son to be a true man, Urge your daughter no less strongly To arise and be a woman. Tcs, a woman ' brightest model Of that high and perfect beauty, Where the mind and soul and body Blend to work out life's great duty. Be a woman ! naught is higher On the gilded list of fame; On the catalogue of virtue There's no brhjhtcr- -holier name. Be a woman ! on to duty ; Kaise the world from all that's law, Place high in the social heaven, Virtue's fair and radiant bow. Let thy influence to euch effort That shall raise our nature human; Be not fashion's gilded lady Be a brave, whole souled, true woman. Married to Save Room. At a late hour in the evening a party of young gentlemen and two young ladies arrived at a hotel in St. Paul. 1 he several individuals de sired separate rooms, though all belonged to the same party, and it did not .seem unreasonable that the two ladies should occupy one room, while the two gentlemen occupied another. On account of the crowded state of the hotel, it was found iuijK.sible to give each a separate room, and they were so informed. They then retired to the ladies' parlor, and held a counsel of war on the subject of the manner in which they were to be accommodated. After a short time, one of the young gentlemen sought an interview with the proprietor of the hotel, and said he thought the matter could be satisfactorily arranged if the proper officials could be procured. "What officials do you require, my dear sir?" was the very polite but peremptory request of the host. lie replied that either a clergyman or a jus tice of the peace would Answer. No sooner said than done ! A justice of the peace was summoned, and, in about three minutes, the young man and one of the young ladies were made (mo flesh, according to the statute in such case made and provided. This little ceremony, costing the hotel noth ing, and only involving the parties in the ex pense of the fee to the justice and the revenue stamp on the marriage certificate, saved to the hotel one room, which was soon after let to an elderly gentleman from up the country, at the rate of 8.' a day. From Life in an Oasis" we take the follov iDg sketch of a Bedouin bride: "I had the -honor of 'asaifetin' this morning at the marriage of a Bedouin lady. Strolling a little way into the desert about eight o'clock I saw three Bedouin encampments, and from the most distant there ii-sued a camel, on whose back was a huge bower, formed of plain branches and covered with red cloth. As the camel approached, the women left the nearest encampment and raised shrill cries in welcome to the bride, the men firing muskets in close proximity, which would have proved alarming to most European young ladies. The cradle was lined with Arab carpets, on which reclined a girl, dressed in the height of Arab fashion: large silver rings on her legs, silver or naments on her breast and turban, and oyer all a huge striped rug of native manufacture. The lovely Fatina for such I learned was her name deigned to glance at me as I raised my hat in salutation of the bride; but she appeared to take far greater pleasure in the musketry of her Be douin followers, who fire about her bower as if it had been a French fortress. Presently there issued from the gate of Laghouate a train of Arab women, dancing, clapping their hands and making shrill cries as fine as human voices possi bly could be to the whinny of a mare. Then the camel was stopped, the bride alighted, em braced a few of the women, joined the procession, and, followed by the camel, all proceeded to the mud hut in which Fatiua was to share for ever more the love of an Arab with two other ladies. But en twite the Bedouins chased about the pro cession at full gallop, firing their guns while at top speed; and when the bridal party had passed into the mud mansion, they followed, and 1 could hear the fm Jejoic repeated. May Fatina be happy ! Her price was not high, as she only cost her lord sixty francs, and there are some young ladies of the desert who cost two hundred Ira ties. FARMER'S HOTEL. JSfiZ. Not "Lawter .Enough, to Hurt. That moderate reputation at the bar is not regarded in tfic West as an insurmountable barrier to vi tal piety or membership in the church, has been definitely settled at F , a city of Illinois, where an interesting revival of religion has been in progress ' under the ministration of Elder B , an able minister and something of a wit. That church was a power in the city and country roundabout. A young lawyer, Hiram D , had been a regular attendant at the meet ing, had several times gone forward to the anx ious seat, yet seemed to be in no hurry to unite with the church. The sickle had been thrust in unsparingly for several weeks, and now they were gathering the sheaves. Brother Hiram was called to testify his experience and explain the difficulties in the way of his "coming out." He arose and said he felt the necessity of being a Christian, but the fact was, he was just start ing in the world, had no way of making a living but to practice law, and doubted whether a man could be a lawyer and a Christian too ! At this point, Elder B cried out, "Come along Brother Hiram, you are not lawyer enough to hurt." , ' MILLINERY AND DRY GOODS.
