r r i MI I? i I n (i m J! I! i I II It J Hi God's Day. Bun day was always to Willie Goodhue God's day. He never spoke f it in any other way. If his little sister asked, of a Sabbath morning, "What day is it, Willie?" He would ahvajs answer "with a smile, as though he were glad, "Whv, dou't you kuow, Mamy ? It is God's His older brother had gone away from home on a visit; and Willie now missed him very much, was anxiously watching for hisreturn. "Grand pa," said he, looking up from his play, '"do you think Thomas will be home by next God's day '" One Sunday, he found Mamy in a comer of the room, locking at a box of jack-straws which had been given him the day before. Willie was shocked, not because .Mamy had taken his play things, but because she had them out on Sun day. "Why, Mamy !" he exclaimed, t;did you forget it was God's day ?" I wanted to know what made the child speak in this way. I thought it was beautiful, but etrange, for a little fellow like him. So 1 called bim to my side, and asked : "Willie, why don't you say Sunday or Sabbath day as we do?" 'Because," said he, :grandpa told me once that this was G( d s own day that he kept out of the week for himself. lie gave us six days to work and play in ; but this he kept for himself: ancf granOpa said that we must never spend a moment more than we could help for our business; for, if we did.it would be stealing stealing God's hours, you know. And. so it's right ti call it God's day, isn't it ? I like to; and, besides, it ""makes me think ar.d . remember. I'm afraid I should forget sometimes, as M amy d-jes, if 1 didn't." What Willie said made me feel ashamed f myself. I couldn't help thinking how often I Lid forgotten and stolen God's precious, holy h mrs. May he forgive me. mm Commodore Uii'Dle and the Japanese Sentry Wc observe an incident that never be fore came under our notice.or ifso.had been forgot ten, that "when Commodore iMIo was paying a visit to a Japanese junk in Jeddo bay, in 16 Hi, a sentry pushed him back into his gig, as he was clambering over the bulwarks. rJ he coasnud ire's official wrath was kindled; ho returned to his ship and sent a peremptory demand i'or an f:p -logy and indemnity for the insult. The reply was returned ?s speedily' as the circumstances would admit that the sentry had acto-1 without orders, but that his head, which had been already cut off, was at the commodore's service." This was certainly manii' Sting a tnet accori modating disposition, and was all that "could be expected under the circuntntic.".?." A. W. There oft' seems a destiny urging us on To the pathways in life that we tread," A fate on whose bosom our spirits have flown, A stream whose deep waters rush on to the bourne. Where our hopes lie withered and dead. There is surely a will that is greater than ours, A spirit that we cannot restrain, A hand that oft crushes hope's smiling young flowers, A heart that will wither the sweetest love bowers. Xor bring back their beauty again. And that fate is embodied, for seldom is seen A smile on the sad, gloomy brow, Xo flowerets are there, no leaflets of green ; We sigh as we think of the joy that has been, And the misery that waits on us now. Some bright spots there are 'mid the gloom of the past, Yet little they bring us of cheer, The present is dark, to the future at last, We look for some comfort, it too has been cast , In the same leaden hue of despair. Then sick of our bondage we'd gladly give o'er The chains so unwillingly ours, And, weary of life, in death would explore Eternity's realms for a happier shore, And Heaven for its loveliest flowers.
