Agricultural. Rotation of Crops. -Few farmers have land that they can afford - to raise more' than two succeeding crops of corn on; and generally it would be better to raise but One crop in two years, and 8u;uetnnes one in three. Corn is a hard crop on land; not so nmch iMJCause the elements of the soil are "taken up bo largely in the crop, as because the bare soil id so unnaturally exposed to the direct rays of the sum mer eun. In the use of small grain or grass, the seed so wo does not act s a tnauure, but the ' growing crop serves as a covering for the ground at the time it is most needed, and allows nature to repair the damage done by former cultivation. In connection with the rotation of crops I will introduce a system of manuring, which may be practiced with satisfactory results, especially on clay land that has been properly undcrdraincd and subsoik-d. First, sow in wheat. In the spring sow oue Imshel of clover seed to ciht acres, ilarvett the wheat, but d not pasture the stubble. Allow all to grow until alter the first heavy frost in the fall, and then turn all under deep and subsoil. Or, if it cannot bo broken in the fall, let it lie until about placing time in the spring, when the green clover will be about knee high. Then turn old stubble, old and new clover, all under a.s deep as possible. Ilarrow, and, if need be, roll, and then plant in corn immediately. In the fall, sow again to wheat, and in the spring to clover, and proceed as before. Under this system a good crop may be raised every year, and the land in time great ly improved. The heavy crops of vegetable matter which are turned into the ground every other year, are for clay laud a nool and cheap manure. For flay toils we want veyetaUe Manures, such as stable manure, corn stalks, the refuse of straw piles, leaves and muck. If the manure has been well composted and thoroughly rotted, it can be best applied as a top-dress-ing in the fall for wheat, or iii the spring to the com in the hiiL If it is to be applied before rottiug, it should be ploughed in the fall. 1 liud that vegetable manures produce better returns when applied to ly lands than to any o'Jitr. Having the soil well cleared, thoroughly underd rained and prepared for plant ing, the next step is to select the seed; and It is of great importance to obtain ood sed. Many per sons who are ia the habit of freshening mackerel or salt fih never dream that there is a right and a wrong way to do it. Any one who has seen the process of evaporation going cn at the salt works knows that salt falls to the bottom. Just so it is in the pan where your mackerel and white fish lies soaking; and as it lies with skin side down, the salt will fall to the skin and re main there, when if placed with the flesh side down, the salt falls to the bottom of the pan, and the fish comes out freshened, as it should; in the other case it is nearly as salt as when put in. If you do not believe this, test the matter for vmmelves. Last Chance to Save Your Costs! Those who are indebted to the estate of Henry B.
