Horse Talk. Bots IN Horses. It is a prevalent inipres-. ion that bot3 often cause the death of hoises. This conclusion is discredited by lr Stewart, iu the "American .Fanners' iiurse Book." lits opinion is that the true character of the but aud iu influence ou the health of the horse have been misunderstood very generally; that the uo.s is hereditary with the tioite, aud iuuud attached I I J I by the tail to the coutiugoi tne ttouiacu ui iuo colt in the shape of a small parasite. Iu this normal conditiou the bot causes no iujury to the horse; has no relationship to the grub or worm, the last being the vhspnug ol' the gad fly, which deposits its eggs upon the hair oi the horse and are bitten oil aud swallowed by the animal. ThpsA Wf-linf into worms in time; pass ofi with the excrement, burrow in the grouud, where a Cnrysalis is iormeu, anu iu mm; ou-w rad fliVs i the result. Thisjriub, unlike the bot, never attaches itself to the coating of the stomach, but amid the food the same as worms in the stomach of a child. Xhose worms may cause much uneasiness to the horse but never death. As to the bot and his operations, Dr Stewart adds: '-'lhe euiicular coating of the stomach to which the bot lasteus himself by means of two little bearded hooks, is nearly, if not wholly, insensible, haviug uo more i'eeiiug apparently than the animals hoots. Wheu the liuiao is in health it is hard, rigid, impenetrable, and the bot, it ever o much disposed to do so, would attack, it in vain;, but wheu death seizes him this catiDg becomes .relaxed and soft, and begins rapidly to decompose, 'lhen only is it that the bot can or ever di.es work, his way thiough it. Another fact still more strongly corroborative of the above proposition, .i this: that of any number of horses killed while in perfect health, and opened an hmir nr two .afterward, there will be found not, one whose stomach is not 'riddled by the bot.' Dissection has revealed the existence of this con dition in hundreds of instances of sudden death frnm accident. This riddling of the stomach is a consequence, not the cause, of the death of the horse, accord in? to the theory here presented. AY hen the animal dips from the eflects of disease or from accidental causes, the instinct of the bot teaches it that decomposition of its home, the stomach of the horse, must readily take place, involving its own death, hence its prompt eflorts to escape from its testenn!? prison. Jt is tne same instinct which induces rats to attempt escape from a scut tied shin or from a building treatcned with des trnri.mn hv fire Jor submersion bv water. If t his ia a true solution of the bot question, the care ol the horse will be considerably simplified and ailing animals relieved iioin many disagreeable drenchiugs designed to expel from their stomachs what has been generally regarded as a mortal enemy. Those well posted in regard to the horse, his enemies and diseases, will doubtless give the theory of Dr Stewart, in reference to the bot, proper consideration. Cure for Founder. The Rural World proposes to cure founder in horsvs in this way : Take the horfcc into a brook or stream of water, deep enough to nearly reach his body, and fasten him there with his head so high that he cannot drink. If the weather is warm keep hiiu there several hours, lhen remove him and rub his legs thoroughly to promote circulation. ll still lame repeat the process two or thivo timos and a cure will be attected In the winter twenty minutes will be long enough t keep the horsj in the water, when he should bo taken out and rubbed as in the other case -repeating the op eration if necessary. This is s iid to cure ail cases of founder, when not of long sl-.in hng. S. B. HSACHAM. Tryon St., Sign of tlio Brass Boot.
