O there's a power to make each hour As swec as Heaven designed it ; Nor need we roam to bring it home, - Though few there be that find it. , We seek too high for things close by, And loose what Xature found ua ; For life hath here no charms so dear As home and friends around us. We oft destroy the present joy For future hopes and praise them, While flowers as sweet bloom at our feet, If we'd but stoop to raise them; For things afar still sweeter are, When youth's bright spell hath bound us; But soon we're taught the earth hath naught Like home and friends around us. The friends that speed in time of need, When hope's last reed is shaken. Do show us still, that, come what will, We are not quite forsaken. Though all were night, if but the light . From friendship's altar crowned U3, 'Twould prove the bliss of earth was this Our home and friends around us. Justice to Women. A bill has passed on to a second reading in the British Parliament, the object of which is to take away from husbands the unbounded control over the property of their wives, which they have possessed from the times of hoary antiquity, and which is worthy of those "good old times" of injustice and oppression. The old fogies object to any disturbance of this denial of jusJice, so promotive of domestic oppression; but it must go the wny of all other fetters on human rights. We hope to see the day when it will be wiped out in every State of the Union. When England is awaking to this absurd injustice and wickedness of past ages, it is time that we should bestir ourselves wherever it is in force and destroy all traces of such a degradation of one-half of our race we sav half, for if every woman is not married, she is going to be, or it will not be her fault. It is objected that it will make ''the sex" too high-minded, and that they will get entirely above themselves. This argument is absurd; for it is notorious that they already wear the breeches in every well-regulated family, and it is useless to deny the fact. Suppose, however, that they have all this power, which no gentleman should deny, would any further damage be caused were it increased? If they rule their husbands now, they can't do any more than that anyhow; and so they may a3 well have as full control over all their property as they now have over that particular chattel, the husband. Seriously speaking, however, we think that some provision should be made to secure wives and families from the trouble and want too often now the result of unfortunate marriages. How many widows would a proper enactment in regard to the property of women save from destitution, now caused by the power given by law to spend thrift and drunken husbands. Look to Your Interests! April 20, 1868 State of North Carolina, Union County. In Equity To Fall Term 1808 O. B. David N. Liles against James Kelly and wife Kexiah Kelly. - It appearing in this case, to the satisfaction of the Court, that the defendant, James Kelly and wife Keiiah, reside beyond the limits of this State so that process cannot be personally served upon them, it is therefore ordered by the Court, that publication be made, for six weeks successively, in the Western Democrat, commanding them to be and appear at the next term of this Court to be held for the county of Union, at the Court House in Monroe, on the 6th Monday after the last Monday in August, 1868, then and there to answer, plead or demur, or judgment pro confesso will be entered against them. Witness, Thomas D. Winchester, Clerk and Master cf said Court, at omoc in Monroe, the 21st day of Jane, 1868. T. D. WINCHESTER, C. M. E. 26 6w pr. adv. $ia Ignorance of Women. Dr. C. S. Lozicr, of New York, a female phy sician, thus refers to a prevalent cause of disease anion'' women : 4iI see no effectual remedy for the evil bat free discussion on the subject among women. There 13 among them a deplorable ignorance of every law of their being. A young lady, last week, fainted on the floor of her dancing school. A patient of mine being present, assisted to loosen her clothing, and tells me she found next her body, around her waist, a steel belt or girdle made to compress her form. Another lady told me, a few days since, that her family doctor ad vised her to dress her young daughter a3 tightly as she could possibly draw her corset, to cure a palpitatiou of the heart. The foolish mother be lieved and obeyed, and shortly buried her daugh ter. I know of many facts of a similar nature coming to me in my daily practice, which pro fessional etiquette forbids me to publish. I am convinced that three-fourths of cur christian women are suicides, and physically more to be pitied than the small-footed Chinese or the fiat headed Indians." Corporations have Souls. The subject of Lite Assurance is attracting the at tention of almost every man. Capitalists are avail ing themselves of the opportunities it affords for profitable investment, and poor men are seeking it as a refuge for their dependent families. While all life assurance societies are financially sound and firm, as the record of each will show, how important that a spirit of high-toned liberality and integrity should characterize the decisions c' those who, as officers and directors, control the payment ol losses! The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States shares largely in the public confidence, the names of those honored Philadelphians, George II. Stuart, Thomas A. Biddle, and Theodore Cuyler, acting directors therefor, being sufficient guarantee to all. The following instance, however, illustrates clearly the generous and noble sentiments that do and will guide its officials in the settlement of claims which arise from the death of its members: John Thompson, deceased, has resided in this city many years, doing business at Spruce street wharf, and for years has been insured in "The Equitable1' for the sum of ten thousand dollars. All his premiums were promptly paid, except the last, which fell due on Monday, October 15, 18GG. On Tuesday. October 1C, the agent of the Society called at the office of Air T., and learned that he was dangerously ill. Returning, he found the son of Mr Thompson with a check drawn by Mr T. himself on Saturday, October 13, for the amount of premium. Under these circumstances, the agent could not re ceive the premium, and thus revive the forfeited policy, without the consent of the Society, to whom the facts were at once presented, (October 18): and alter the Society had been informed of the death of Mr Thompson, J. W Alexander, Esq , replied as fol lows: "We think it best, under the circumstances, to receive the premium on Thompson's policy, and will not make the failure to pay on the day the pre mium was due a reason for declining to pay the loss We arc certainly not legally bound to receive it, but as the parties appear to have acted in good faith, we prefer to incvr the loss rather than take advantage of their neglect. Please receive the premium avd issue the receipt. Is there one individual of the large number insured by "The Equitable11 who will not npprove and ap plaud this generous action? Certainly, after such praiseworthy conduct, we cannot endorse the old saying: "Corporations have no souls." Highly commendable as the above instance of liber ality on the part of The Equitable Life Assurance Society certainly is, yet it forms by no means an ex ception to the general system of dealing with their policy-holders. This justly-popular Society ahvays pays its losses with the most honorable promptness, never having contested a claim, thereby leaving no uncer tainty whatever concerning its ability and willing ness to settle all claims of a similar character. Philadelphia Press. This Society has nearly $7,000,000 of assets, and is represented by Hutchison, Buheoi-ghs A Co., who are the General Agents. Juno 22, 1868. I take pleasure in informing the public at large that I have again mads preparation for the manufac ture, (on a scale adequate to the increased demand) of the so well and favorably known "Koopmann's Bitters," The virtues of which have become as familiar as household words, as can be attested by hundreds of families who have used it with unvarying success in all cases of Cholera LIorbii3, Dysentery, DiarrhcEa and Chills and Fevers, Ac, and by thousands of North Carolina soldiers in the late war who have found it in the different diseases contracted in camp, a safe and certain cure. This remedy is so well known that any recommen dation is deemed utterly unnecessary, although I can refer with pride to actual consumers in your midst, who are willing to testify to its efficacy. g, Wholesale and retail at my Store in Charlotte, N.
