The parade of voters being large and impressive, alarmed the carpet-baggers, several of whom called on Gen. "Gentlemen," said the General, "you are the l dest fools I ever saw, I fought these people four years to make them carry the flag, and now you nro mad because they wiidi to march under it." A gentleman who has recently arrived from South Africa, lella a story about a shipwreck near the Cape of Good Hope, which derives additional zest from tho fact that he was one of the clergymen referred to. It appears that on board of the steamer Walden stun were several clergymen from Natal, going to a synod of the Reformed Dutch Church at Cape Town, and also an English clergyman. The steamer was wrecked near Point L'Agulias, to the East of Cape Town, and the bor.ts were gotton out. One of the clergymen rushed for the first boat, but Captain Joss, the master of the ship, lifted him out of the boat saying, "You are a minister and prepared to die; the sinners must be saved first," and sure enough the clergy were compelled to stick to the ship until the sinuers had been landed. m m An old gentleman by the name of Gould late ly married a girl scarcely nineteen years of age after the wedding the juvenile bridegroom addressed to his friend Dr G. the following couplet, to inform him of the happy event : So you see, my dear 6ir, though eighty year old, A girl of nineteen falls in love with old Gould.
