A iitMINE TiUEND OF TtMI'KHANl. L. J-Oll THE NOHTH CAROLINA WMIil. THE SClKHif. UF MISS JiltANDON' AND Mil. LEE. Mil. Kl'lTOR : Knowing that the readers ot your interesting and valuable Journal are not merely willing but quite foln itous to I hear of the advancement of the caue of female education. I am fally assured ou i will freely permit me to oeeujy a brief l space in showing the importance of the sub ject and calling attention to a good and sue ; cessful institution established, for that pur ' pose, in the southern section of the county, j No longer can it be maintained that it is ' entirely unnecessary to bostow as much care and means in training daughters as on the education of som. Those days of ignor- n nml nrAimlii-A btva r,,.iil nr. plrcr,ts tavc COuinic.,1Ced to realize that if tlieir Jauiltl..r3 be not thoroughly e.l ueaied they cannot be prepared tocxert their power ful and extensive influence for the promo tion of the best interests of the r ce. Hav ing observed that young persons usually receive first impressions and early instruc tion from maternal counsels and example aud also that the ideas acquired and habits of thomlit and action formed iu infancy will be tenaciously retained and closely fob lowed during subsequent life, we have rea sonably concluded that if preference should be shown in the education of vouth, it should be eiven to the tlati-htri s. 'Yhrii occupy the most prominent and important ! position in society. They are destined to : wield the ii.o-t potetit influence. How phil ' nt.thropic and proper is it that the best and p most laudable etlorts be made to secure i tiieir influence (since it will certainly be ex ' erted) iu favor of intt-Iliciice refinement and every thing lovely and of good report, j The mind must be cultivated and developed, j Knowledge tnu.-t be acquired. The man- hers should be properly formed. The ta-tc : should be refined. The style mu.-t be itn ' proved by frequent composition. The best models should be studied. Although it is : a-serted that one tongue is enough fjr a i lady, yet wc see no valid reason hy she I may not be acquainted with Latin, (.reek' i and some of the modern languages. Music ; and painting should not be neglected. An! I aequaintanee with the rules of etiquette and ! customs of polished society is indispensable. A modest, gcnt.-el and polite young lady i will excite admiration and attract attention. SldOVItNEV. FOR TIIK Nontll-CARI.INA WHIO. Mr. Alitor, There ar. some reports in circulation about llavidsotCollege, iu which the whole community are reply interested, iu reference to which I (Wire information, and know not to whom I 'an apply niote cppropriately than to your:lt. It is said that the Convation which met last month in your town retsed by a deci ded majority to accept tin resignation 01 the l'rofessors, tendered t the Hoard of Trustees in August, and cferrcd to the Convention for decision; an yet proceeded to the election of two additiual l'rofessors. Have the additions to thcitfuuds justified such a measure ! Have the' buildings pre pared for their aecoimnodaion ? Are the prospects of the College so encouraging as to invite so great an incrase of expendi ture ? lo give us if you pease, Mr. Editor, some items from the rcpor. of Treasurer or Agents. Their action imieates an onward move which will cheer the heart of every friend of Education in Wctcru Carolina. I do hope it will check those ill-oiuetied croakers, who have beeu singing out " loss of l'ublic Coufidcuct," " dying!" and such like strains. V Jt' ..J' mUiw- fl(fvet 1uiW-.jiUiiilatin? support five l'rofessors aud a President uu- icsa they saw their way clear. It gratified me much to learn that the Hoard had sent a Committee to request l'rotessor Johnston to withhold his resigna tion, and that he had conditionally consent ed so to do. It is not at all surprising that they are unwilling to lose the services ot such an experienced and able l'rofcssor. He has been connected with the institution almost from the beginning ; and has aUay enjoyed the entire personal esteem and pro fessional contideuce of every individual, every President of the Hoard, every uiem ler at any time in the Faculty, every stu dent even to the humblest individual on the College hill. Indeed I do not think he ha ft personal enemy in the world. His deep piety, strict principle, manifest sincerity, simplicity and dignity of manners ; his gene ral scholarship ; his accurate and profound acquaintance with the subjects on which he gives instruction j thorough mode of drilling on preliminary principles ; bis easiness of access at all times aud patience in repeatini: and simplifying until all who will mu-t ap prehend, are traits not often to be found. The manner in which his classes have ac quitted themselves at their examinations, has (while I disparage no oth. rs) done cred it to themselves and their faithful, eoii-cien-tious aud successful instructor. 1 rejoice sir, that the Trustees have not permitted him to leave th.in, and feel when I express that joy, that the sentiment finds an echo not only among the Trustees, but through out the length and breadth of that commu nity w hom he has so long and so faithfully served, and many a heart cherishes the hope that he may be persuaded to remain at his post of laborious usefulness. All who know the man, aud he is cxten-ively known, regard his removal as a public loss, and tho severest blow that could befall the College. He is, Mr. Editor, a very modest man, who shows no foppish airs, handles no goll-eu-firaile'l enio-, wears neither silk nor kid gloves ; but lays " his shoulder to the wheel" of every work most cheerfully and efficiently. He has labored for the College faithfullv and unweariedlv, and with a lib eral hand seconded every effort to advance it. With very little property, he has con tributed more than any individual ixeept Mr. Car-on and W. L. Lia.id.-on, E-q. The sums given may be told in ilmusnmh. He is habituated to laboring aud giving to the College as a favorite .hild, and I hope he may be permitted to labor and give to its ever-recurring wants 'even down to old age." Nor have his benefactions stopped icre ; I met him one evening returning from a bitter cold walk of a mile and a half 'o see if a jioor aged widow had a supply of food and wood. Other instances are known in which he had clad the orphan and made I the widow's heart to rejoice, by ministering to their necessities not " once and again," , but ottcn; even i eotim tell more, much U.ore otl this topic, but he does not talk of sueh matters aud I fear I may offend his , delicacy. I may be much behind the times, Mr. Editor. My ta-te still reverses and cherishes the old fashioned virtues and pa triarchal simplicity 01 manners,! love to have such an example before the young i men of our College. .Such I am sure is the i wish of the great mas of the natrons of the Institution. The effort of the Tru-tees shows their judgement and I hope they will spare no exertion to retain I'mf. John-ton. The College cannot afford to give him up. and the Community will hold the Jioard re-poti-ibh'. if every effort is not seasonably j I f.l ..C , ,1 ' mane ior me attainment ot so ucsiranie an end. .So Jitdgts a Fiirixl tn M'nlrst Wort It.
