Swito UaVmg. Tlie Scene on Mount Carmel. This mountain being situated in the wes tern part of Palestine overshadows the Med iterranean. The principal actors were Kli jnli, the chief of the Prophets, and Allah, Kttig cf Israel. The latter worshipped llaal an idol in great repute in those time!" the god of fire. And so prevalent was his example that of all Israel there were but seven thousand who did not bow the knee to that pseudo deity. In consequence of this wickedness 'Jod scourged them with a fauirie for the space of three years end six jiionths. Kpipl.any b" . : y : : . .: ; i :.. ) -, jr r:'.. !- I dwell for a while upon that which that day ! commemorates : the first few handfuls of the great harvest of the nations. Then we, who are by nature aliens from God, and strangers to the covenaut of promise, began to draw nigh to Him; for Ho who was to make both one by breaking down the par tition which was between us, was as on this day manifested forth to us " by the leading of a star." At the birth of our Lord, the two ex tremes of life nirt together, to testify to Him as the promised Messiah. His first witnesses were the humble shepherds the fir.-t messengers of these glorious tidings, uneducated men, versed in no knowledge but that which related to their calling, lint others far different from them in character and position, were to unite with them. From the distaut East came His jceoud witnesses. From that land of dim and drea my tradition, which had been the fountain of all the wisdom and philosophy of those davs. selected from the most learned class existing in that country, they were led a Ions journey by miraculous means, and all, it would seem, for the sole purpose of testi fying to the truth of Christ. Thus, poverty aud wealth, ignorance aud wisdom, united at this particular crisis. lieautiful indeed was this exhibition of faith in the Eastern Magi, and therefore the Church has held them iu remembrance by this festival, as week after week she cele brates the manifestation of Christ to the Gei.tiles. It was no ha.-ty impulse, but a calm and deliberate conviction, which could bide the test of time and the accomplish II10Ilt of a wcarisome journey. And the very fts they had prepared were interpreted by the ancient fathers as being significant lot' their faith. They offer" Him, say these early writers, increase, as their God gold, as their kin'' and mvrrh. as tvnical of a world as foolishness with God Such then was 'he Epiphany the reve lation of Chii.-t (o the Gentiles. These were the urst fruits of those countless thousands who were shortly to be cathered into the ! fold of Christ. For soon the Apostles over- f nasc.,.1 tint linrrinr vetiifli stnn r.'i f e.1 .Ti . w Jm Oontil.-, and proclaimed to the latter the Gospel hopes in all their fullness. Not only in tho cool of the evening but in the morning, at noon tide, amidst tho rush of business, as well as in the silent hours of uight, and m the sanctuary on the Sabbath. God meets men, and asks them where they are, and how they staud related to him. In his providence, and by his Word and Spirit, God asks each rational, accountable soul, hurrying on to eternity. "Where art thou!" Multitudes heed not the call. Jlut God has yet auother way of speaking. Ho will sooner or later bring every individual to a conciousness of his pure moral position and its consequences. Hear reader, have you ever heard God thus speaking to your inmost soul! And have you realized where you were as a mo ral and immortal being ? Arc you now in Christ, one with him, your sins pardoned, and your soul renewed by tho craec of God ! Or arc you still impenitent, unconverted, without God and without hope iu the world? O, think of it; God is now asking you, "Where art thou!" Perhaps you have tho witness within that you " have passed from death unto life, "and feel that you are " a new creature of Jesus Christ." Well, where ore you as a Christian?
