One morn ing as he was going to Lis work he passed by t door where a l'hrcuologist Lad hung up his sign, with- a notice that skeptics were not charged for the examination of their heads. This induced him to go in and have his lumps examined. The 1'hrenologist said to him, " You have the organ of sculp ture in a very eminent degree, and if you were to cultivate your talent you would be a very distinguished artist." Mills replied to him, " You Lave confirmed me iu my skepticism. I never had any confidence iu your pretended science, but if I had, your account of my own Lad would utterly de stroy it. I am, sir, a house plasterer, and know nothing about sculpture whatever," The Phrenologist replied, "I don't care for that ; you have the organ in a most wonder ful decree and should cultivate your talent." Mr. Mills said the idea that he possessed a rare and valued talent which he was not conscious of, haunted Liiu night and day. But still he never thought of trying his tal ent, for he did not know how to begin. One day he saw an Italian goin;; through the street of Charleston with a but of Napol eon in plaster, and he sld him how it was moulded. The Italian promised to show him, and did so. He caught the idea in stantly, and was enraptured with it. First he commanded a likeness in plaster of his father-in-law, who had very prominent fea tures. It was the wonder of all who saw it. He then Commenced taking busts, as he was doing when we formed Lis ac quaintance. Next he chiseled iu beautiful marble a bust of that distinguished states man, Mr. Calhoun. His friends now declar ed their willingness to send him to Rome, where he might study sculpture, and culti vate his genius. For this purpose they pro vided him with funds, and as he wan pass ing through Washington he was there en- irazed tD Wke the Lqucstraia t-iatue of; Jackson. In his poverty and obscurity in Charles ton, whilst orking at his trad? of house plasterer, be kept a bear and a dog, which he would lnake light for a fourpence. .Be tween this exhibition of his doj and bt'T, and w ith the assistance of his trowel, he I made his living iu a sort of way, and would i in all probability, have died in these humble ' pursuits, but for the Phrenologist.
