From tin Ckrittiun Athocate and Journal. Ktnmrkable Answer to Prayer. The fallowing circumstance vrnt related to roe by t ho lute brother P., who was one of the uioat deeply pious men I ever know, and for many years a class-leader in ono of the Methodist Churches in Philadelphia. This brother nnd myself were conversing one day on God's dealing toward his chil dren, and how far wo might expect the in terposition of Divine Providence, in answer to prayer, when with tears of joy rolling down hit checks, ho related to me the fol lowing :- After I had served out my !;tno and bad married, which was about thirty-five years ago, I moved with my family to Wilming ton, about thirty miles below Philadelphia, and opened a small jewelry store, which was my business, trusting in God to pros per mo. But for several years, business was dull, and frequently for weeks I would not take in enough to keep my family in bread. This state of things continued so long that I began to be discouraged, and to look round tor mine way of escape, but none appeared to ofiVr. To mako my dif ficulties worse, if possible, a very deep snow had fallen; it was nii'l-v. inter, and, with the exception of a watch or two to repair I bad taken nothing in for many days. Tlio wants of myself and family were pressing upon nie, and two notes were coming due in Philadelphia in a few days for over 5 lull. I was almost beido myself. I tried to bor row of my friends; but thoso who would baTe gladly assisted me wcrciu consequence cf the .stringency of the times, unable to do j. I :!icn tried ti got the notes renewed, but this was ruiMtiiulv refused ; o that ap parently, uiy little all in a few days would be fold out by the sheriff. Iu this cuier- j pency I resolved to lay my case before the ! Lord, nnd, in order to do this, I pet apart a ! day for fasting and prayer. This was on j Friday; the next Mouday the payment of the cotcs fill due, and my creditors told; iie plainly if they wercnot paid they would icrrcdiately proceed ajaiuit inc. l ii'ier th.-se discouraging circmn-t nn-i"; I aro vcrv early on the morning which I l.ait devoted to prayer nnd fasting, and, locking myself into my room commenced to pray. All day I staid there ; now reading some encouraging chapter iu God's blessed b.)ok, tl.eu earnestly pressing my case at n throne of graco. Having thus passed tin day, in tl.e twilight of the ccuin I rectir cd hat I believed to be a clear evidence lliit the Lord had heard my prayer, and that deliverance was at hand. On Monday mornin; I aro-e three ho.irs before day. It had bi'eii snotting, and every thing outward was dreary. I fill on my knees, and at tempted to lay my earn before the Lord iighin, when, with such power that I was thrown Hat on my face on the floor, the ev idence was again renewed, deliverance is at kaiid. I went to my store, made a fire aoi at down behind the counter. It wax tiow nearly day light. I ou!d hero st-i.: that in ry window theru hung, a a show 4ct, au r-otm'iatcd set of .-ilrer-ware. of Kn .&x iMike, very heavy, having the Kngli-h coat of anil engraved on it. It had been owned by my last employer for some twen ty years, and by n e for several. No tne ever asked iti prioc ; it was simply iu the wiudoT for a show. A tli day began O !awu I beard the creaV of a wagon and looking out I pcreeived an old-fashioned pig drive up and stop, when a tall and ven erable lookm? man who-e locks were almost as hito as the snow that lay on the ground, topped down, and, after looking in my window for a moment cutcred the store, and immediately aked the price of tho ilver set in the window. I told Lint with a fil tering voice five hundred dollars. Ild a-k-td me, with a benevolent look, if I had a box that would hold it? and on my answer ing in the allirmative, be told me be would tike it. In a few minutes it was aafi-ly box od and put into bis gig, the money in gold p lid down, aud he, with a smile drove ulf. So ono was ever able to t.-ll from wheuee be came, or whither he ent ; nor have I ever been able to tell to this day. Suffice it to say, f procured a good horse, mounted him. mi l a tew minutes before tnree o'clock was iu Philadelphia, paid my notes, and re turned tha next day to my family, strong iu faith, giving glory to God. fc " b .1. II. I.. (The above extraordinary c.ne is commu nicated by one wiiuse vcratity i unimpeach able. tn ii i: j.ii ; u us con v i: r s at i on. A pastor sat down by the side of a sick bed, not long agi, and opened the subject of personal religion. The patient a lady of ll.C :no t retiring and .lelicatd t-tjirit Kccinei at once surprised anil delighted with the 'iietiou Vhieh he a-ki d and at the free dom of communion whieh a!mo-t iuimedi fttely resulted. At length U- asked him with great earnestness. ' Why is it that Uhrisli ms o i-bloni talk about tliesg tilings ' I have beeu a profes sor of religion for fifteen yitarf, arid never have I been spoken to about my religious feelings, by either friend or ministers, with but one excepting !'' This fact corresponds with another re ce: ily seen among the items of a religious piper; viz: that a man who had been a arel't for fifteen years m ver new the case of any minister holding a conversation with ant member of his family, directly on the nece-sity of a change of heart. J his last statement seem almost incredible ; but wc regret the inability to t it down among the impossibilities. In pleasing contrast with the foregoing facts, we lately heard of to heavenly minded ladies who called on a friend, with all the restraints ol a " reeeptiou-d ay, " uu 1 taking their turn with ft numerous train of callers, who were yet o true to their Mas ter, that they left in the house a most hal lowed Uicniory,of their visit. Although the conversation, in the cue of others, hud tak en the widest possible range out-ide the cir cle of practical religion, these ladies aome how succeeded, and apparently without de ain or consciousness of it, iu bunging the. tniiidaof the little circle to the very foot of the cross. IIvw rich the aavor of tuch a conversa tion ! what healthful influences must fol low sueh disciples ! Sueb vi-it will live in memory wbcu hundreds of thoughtless in terviewi have been forgotten. Uat why should sueh cases be exeep tions ? Will not they that love the Lord " speak often one to another V Can it be that the mouth should re I'm to convey the abundance of the heart 7 Can trtio diseiplei journey together and their hearts not burn within them 1 What a day will that be for the church, which shall see many Christians : of tlU stamp j whose conversation ii as be- oraotb. godliness ; whose lips do honor toj their heavenly hopes ! What is there likej truly religious conversation, to bind heart to heart to excite self examination to overcome temptation to cheer tlio pilgrim age to comniuuieato the aacroJ glow of piety to hallow the fireside, tho parlor and the highway aud iu short, at once to an ticipate and prepare for the couuuuuiou of the everlasting rest ! 2f. Y. Oh. THE SADBATII. I The whole universe was created iu six I days, and Oil the seventh day the Creator ' rested from His labors. This day lie call ed Sunday a holy day- which has beeu set aside as a day of rest for all His crea tures. They are commanded to keep this i day holy nnd uot work thereon, except it bo i to ' lift .'.be ox out of the ditch.' It should 1 be spent in reading good book, in taking a religious view of our conduct and in at tendance on the church of God. It is a jilay for holy devotion a day for prayer, Yet, bow often do we see it recklessly violat ed ! Some of our youth arc bold enough 'even to bunt on this sacred day. In doing this they mauifest a very little regard ci ther for (I od or man. Young men! it's a shame! and we earnestly beseech you to btop ! Remember that yon have souls that an tn live forever in rapture vr woe; that ; you are injuring your good moral character and paving the way for deeds of a still I darker hue. Remember these things, young - men, and pay that respect that is due to the ' Sabbath. A little pebble or piece of moss ! thrown in a stream, near its head, will cer tainly change its course. S.n, young men, I will your acts, while young, have a power erful influence in the formation of your cha racter and course through life. Resist the 1 first temptation to do wrong. " : It will be seen by a pcrual of the fol- lowing article fruin " 'I he North-Carolina' Farmer 'of 1" l" that we then earnestly en- ; ilcavored to impress upon our farmers the importance of making themselves aciuaint d with the science of their ait ; the tie-1 i-cssity of whieh was obvious from the dis astrous effects of the blind and reckh ss svs tcm of culture which prevailed amonj. them. A happy change has beeu wrought iu tho public u.ind since that day. The spirit uf impru',.im nt has been aroued, and is now at work all over the Mate. Much, iu some portions cf it, has been accomplish ed ; and Wc hare reason to hupe the work iil be general an 1 thorough. Kvcry one is bcfriimiii to imjuire what can be u,ne to increase tb products of his farm ; every one is act-ki tip to learn the experience of the skilful, the successful and thp thrifty ; every one is bcinnin to see that judieious a;ri cultural papers, cllecting jnd publishing what is solid and pjod iu both theory ami practice, re impoitatit and useful mediums of furnishing the information they desire ; thona who never read b'fore are b'inniiij to read, digest, and practice systematically what they learn; aud every one that thus reads finds iii reading plea-ure and profit that he nver dreamed of before. R". thrre is something; yet lackiri"'. ( lur farmers uiu-t miiiirle with each other more ; there muit be cons rt nnd energy in tbir opera tions; and these things cannot be brought about k ithout 01 ea!:'zali'n. County clubs must be formed ; to be interesting and pro fitable they must meet often; the members must be punctual in attending ; they must relate their expi rience, di-cus such mea sures as relate to their interest, and exciu each other to labor to xeel in ail thiiiL's competed with their pursuits ; let, then, the old county Societies whieh may have pone down, bu revived; let new ones bo esta blished; let thoe who fed an interest iu the cause, exert thrinc'ves every where in ptiitiz iiji and ki.tl'INtJ I F well organized societies in every county. Let them urpe; the importance of reading apt ieukural peri odicals, of adopting agricultural improve-' meiit", and contributing sometliinp at every Fair to encourage aud help forward the good work. Ti e following is the ixlract fru-n " The North-I'ari'lina Fanner referred to above. Farming has been reduced to science,1 and tio one now, w ho baa the ability to read and di-position to Mudy, need po blindly to work in makinp experiments on his farm. I Among those wno do wisely avail them selves of its lights, the woik of improve-, mentis rapidly advancing; ami none arc lajrgini; behind anii l-t seems of fiuitii s" toil, want and desolation, but those who wilt nut read the wilfully ignorant aud blind. j That the latter is nnncrois class in! That which was naturally good has been rendered as unproductive and unprofitable as that which was natural-1 ly bad. lias this state of thinps arisen fiom ' ignorance, from design, from necessity T lfyj whichever of these it has been immediately 1 caused, it is clear thnt the rej'iisitc decree ! of knowledge on the part of the owners of! the soil would have retarded, if not wholly prevented it." Rut. wo rejoice that the 1 means of resuscitation are w ithitf their reach. A master tpirit informs tin. 111 that " tbe same knowledge will enable them to reclaim these lands amin, and gradually re-torc them to a more fertile condition. " The same author says, " the art of culture in deed is almost entirely a chemical art. since nearly all its processes are to be explained ! only on chemical principles. If joii add ' lime or gyp'iim to your !iind,y;ii introduce! new chemical agents. If you irrigate youn meadows, you must demand a ren-ou Iromj the chemist for the abundant growth of grass which follows. o you find animal 1 manure powerful in its action, is the effect of some permanent, while that of others is speedily exhausted ? does a mixture of ani- j mat and vegetable manure prepare the land best for certain kinds of grain ? do you em ploy common salt, or gypsum, or aaltpetrej or nitrate of soda, with advantage ? In all I these jmj observe, chemical results which' yon. would be able to control and modify, did you possess tho requisite knowledge. " The greatest light has been thrown upon the art of uulture by tho researches of orgunie chemistry. " Kvcry day too ii adding to the number and value of its discoveries," and the agriculturist should endeavor to keep pace .vith the advances of this depart ment of science. Kventhu most inveterate anti-book fann er must become convinced, by examining the subject, that farming is a science, requir ing study as well as labor. He will eeo from the facta already stated, thut it will tcachl him the true nature and constituents ot the oil, how ho may ascertain the substances of whieh plants are composed, whut kind of manures best suit certain soils aud crops, the best composition: to restore worn out lands, and to enrich those that are natural ly poor. Ami, moreover, ho will learn fiom it that all organic matter, or vegetable aud animal substances, are composed chiefly of four elements, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen ; that although three of these, iu a natural state, arc aeriform, aud cannot be perceived by the senses, yet, in proper combinations, they form tho principal part of the solid matter of our own bodies aud of those w hich support them " constitute those various forms of vegetable ma'terl which is the aim and end of the uit of cul ture to raise with rnpidity, will, ceruinty, 1 and in abundance. How difT'otilt to under-' stand the intricate process by which notun: J works up these raw materials into her many i beautiful productions yet how interesting it must be to know her ways, how use ful even partially to find them out!'' It! showa how every farmer cau procure these combination! and apply them to the cfitain improvement of the land, and increase of his various crops. Even the manner of cultivating the soil ie tiovj conducted upon strictly scientiGe principles, with mrprUing I success. Then-fore, all who have the abil-1 ily ought to make themselves thoroughly acquainted nitu this science ; ami those who have it not, should at least familiarize them selves with the important discoveries nnd interesting results by which it is daily throw ing new lights upou the art of culture. l.r.-iiiK'r !
