A local option breeze is brewing in this State. Elections will probably be held in Durham, Oxford and othei towns, in May next, to get the sense of the voters of the respective locali ties upon the question of granting li cense to retail spirituous liquors. In connection with this subject we quote Sec. 3113 of chapter 32, of the Code : "Itshall be the duty of the board of commissioners of any county, upon petition of one-fourth of the qualified voters of any county, town or town ship, in tbeir respective counties, to order an election to be held on the first Monday in May. in any year, to ascertain whether or not spirituous liquors maybe sold in said county, town or township." We presume that sooner or later the voters of Goldsboro will be called upon to express a ver dict upon the license question. THE KEIXOGG CONCERT. Since hearing his sermon the idea has taken possession of us that the reverend doctor is a wo man suffraffist but we shall not dis cuss that point. That our readers may enjoy somewhat of his sermon with us we give them the oenent 01 sucn or nis remarks as we could take, lie said, "God showed m the very beginning, as we read in the Bible, that He in tends woman to occupy an equal posi tion with man by the words, "I will make for the man a help-meet." God formed woman as well as man after His own image: therefore she bears the same responsibilities towards her maker as he. Man's work is to pro tect and to guide: woman's, to comfort The appearance here on Thursday, the 28th inst.? of America's most cele brated prima donna, ; Miss Clara Lotjise Kellogg, supported by a tal ented company of; artists, will be an event in our musical annals that will be long and pleasantly remembered, and it is gratifying! that present indi cations point to one of the largest and most fashionable audiences ever; gath ered in the spacious Opera Houe. Miss Kellogg needs no introduction to the r American public'. The late Richard Grant White, who had no superior in this conntry as a mufical critic, and who had heard every gre-t singer who had visited the "United States, said that Miss Kellogg was not only the foremost American singer, but she was absolutely the only gen uine prima donna thus far born in America. The Baltimore Sun, in which city Miss Kellogg appeared last week, says' "there is no concert to equal Kelloggs. The, strictest relig ionists may attendf for it is only music of a high order.". Miss Kellogg's snpport is all that could be desired by so celebrated a prima donna. At Petersburg, the Index-Appeal says they were "encored nsistingly." Our contemporary says: "Miss Montagriffo received an ovation of applause, and in response sang, 'Tell me one thing, tell me truly.' Her coquetry of style enthused the audi ence." "Of the violiniste, Miss AllieTrorbett, all things commendable deserve to be said she is a genuine artist, and was re ceived with a storm of applause and a demand for an encore. She gracious ly complied with the importunities of the audience and for an encore gave something of a waltze capriecio and fantasia. Miss Torbett's last number and classic encore were played verv beautifully and with true artist spirit. "Miss Montegriito sang 'O M10 Fer nando' for her second number. Her endition of this number, together with her naivete and coquetry, seemed to charm the audience, and when she gave 'Some Day' the audience encored intil the roof seemed in danger of coming down. "Mr. Glose's rendition ot the Pas quinade was not quite up to thestand ard, though his technique is fully equal to its trying demands. The audience was in high good humor and delighted with everthing. Encores wer3 de manded with every number on the avail , themselves of the opportunity. : The piano used in these concerts is the world renowned Chickering, and is a splendid instrument. I mention this fact in order to called the attention of the audience to its excellent tone. Mr. G. R.i Ackroyd is. traveling -t with the Kellogg Company and superintends the handling of the instrument. The Compjany is complete in every respect and the entertainments are the best that has ever visited the South. R. A SPECIAL TRAIN Will Come Up From NEW BERNE On The Evening Qf, Doq't Fail to go to M.
