Church South. , Richmond, January 24. The Qen eral Conference of the Methbdist Episcopal Church South will meet in this city early in May next. The; last time the Conference assembled mUhis State was in Petersburg in 1847. That assemblage was a very small one com pared to that which meets in May. The latter will be composed of about twonundfed and eighty clerical and lay delegates. Among the latter; will be some of the most : prominent imen in the South, including Secretary of the Interior Lamar, Governor Col quitt, of Georgia. ex-Judge Foraker, ef Louisiana, and many other names well known in the Methodist church. The conference will remain in session three or four weeks. The sessions are expected to be unusually interest ing. When asked by the Sun corres-- pondent what prominent men would be present as delegates, a prominent diviner laughingly remarked: Oh, well, you know in the South politi cians never take any very prominent place in our church affairs like they do in the North. Politics and religion are not allowed to be mixed up with us. There will, of coursje, be gentle men in theConference next May who are prominent in the affairs of their States, but such positions do not in crease their influence in church af fairs." Among the clerical delegates to the conference will be some of the ablest ministers in the South. It has not yet been fully decided, but it is likely that this body will hold its ses sion in the Broad street Methodist church, at the coroner of Tenth;and Broad streets. DOWN AN EMBANKMENT. A Train Hurled from the Track One Man Killed and Sev eral Injured. St.. Joseph, January 21. A disas trous wreck occurred last night on the St. Joseph and Des Moines branch of the Chicasro. Burlinsrton and Ouincev svstem, about four miles east of Alv bany. The passenger tram bound for St. Joseph encountered a broken rail, when the whole train except the en gine was thrown from the track down an embankment fifteen feet. There were fifteen passengers on the train, and none escaped injury. An old man named Miller, from Palmyra, Iowa, was instantly killed, his neck being broken, j The. seriously injured are : Oscar Lehman, of Burlington, Iowa, injuries supposed to be fatal; Frank Chambers, of Burlington, Iowa; Clara M. Schaeffer, of Edgar, Neb., and two children; J. L. Ramey, of Albany ; Jas. A. Daner, of Oftumwa, Iowa; Charles A. Henry; Jos. Budd, conduc tor. Several others received painful injuries. "Fizzled Out." This js what a once prosperous mer chant ssnd of himself, the other day. His business jhad faded out, credit was gone, and the sheriff had sold his goods. The trouble fe proceeded from a prolonged; at tack of dyspepsia, which prostrated and unsettled, him so that he could not attend to his affairs. Pity he hadn't thouglit of Browns Iron Bitters, which would have saved him. Mr. A. J. Lawler, 172 S. Broadway, Baltimore, says, "Malaria; and dyspepsia troubled, me for nine years. Brown's Iron Bitters gave me relief."; TO PREVENT PNEUMONIA. As pneumonia is essentially a con gestivo dJsease the best preventive measures are those which avoid the j causes of congestive. Pulmonary con gestion is ravored by too heavy cloth mg worn in winter weatner. A sen ous error is the supposition that a double! set of flannels worn next the skin affords double protection. The fact in such a case the inner flannel absorbs all secretion and perspiration. which are there retained by the outer y-a . . T flannel. An almost poultice-like ac tion is:thus brought about, softening ine sKin and rendering it mghly sus ccptiable to the slightest exposure. Gver-heated, ill-ventilated rooms, and tne sudden transition from these to the sharp outer air, are other avoida ble preidisposing causes of the disease. He who uses a cold sponge bathe with brisk rubbing every morning, who wears tne lignest clothing consis tent with comfortable protection, and keeps his living room well ventilated and at a mean temperature of G8 de grees, is employingthe best preventive treatment of pneumonia known to sanitary science.
