Election day was very cold and disa greeable and the vote cast was light; the majority were in favor of an ap propriation, but as the measure did not obtain a majority of the register ed voters as required by law, it was lost. i Hickory Press: The Hickory Man: ufacturing Company have secured the contract to furnish the greater part of the mill work for the magni ficent hotel now in course of construc tion on Battery Porter at Asheville. This company is now negotiating with the constructors to furnish the doors, sash, blinds, moulding, brackets, &c, for the new hotels at Warm Springs and Haywood White bulphur bpnngs. Wayuesviile, which are being re built. Raleigh News Observer: Miss Pat- sey Baker Blount, of Washington, jN. C, died at her home in that town the morning ot January . bne was iin the 85th year of her apre, and was the last surviving child of the late John Gray Blount, and was the oldest na tive inhabitant of the town of Wash ington. She was the last of a genert ation noted in North Carolina, and was a niece of Senator Blount, of Tennessee. . Clinton Caucasian: Capt. W. L. Faison met with a very painful acci dent last Thursday, while assisting in " taking an inventory at the store of Mr. A. F. Johnson. He was on the top of a seven foot stepladder taking a list of some articles on the : top shelves, when the foot of the ladder slipped, precipating him to the floor. He fell upon his back and was ren dered insensible by the shock. We are glad to know that he sustained no senous injury. Elizabeth City Falcon: The steamer Shenandoah made her first trip after the freeze on Monday. When she ar rived here on 'Monday, Capt. South gate reported having seen an iceberg in (Jroatan sound, and described the sight as beautiful. It stood about twelve or fifteen feet out of the water and was about 75 feet in diameter When the Captain first saw it he took p f it to be an ice-bound vessel. Kane is; charged with having ciiminally assaulted a young white woman named Florence Skipper, on Sunday night last. The young woman is the daughter of Mrs. S. Skipper, a widow, who lives on Uueen between Fifth "and Sixth streets. On Sunday night last a colored man entered the house of Jjlxs. Mrs. Skipper finally secured the aid of. a policeman and returned; but as soon as the officer entered the house the .ziegrb attacked him; disabled him so that he was unable to use his pistol, and i was thus enabled to make his escape, i . , A PERICYTES POSITION, j Sailors Landed in Safety from a Sinking ;Ship. Norfolk Landmark of Wednesday. j. The high winds and thick weather which have prevailed during: the last few days are being attended by the J. At a late hour Tuesday night the life saving ; patrol of station No. 7 sighted a vessel ashore and about one mile North of hi3 station. Such action as is usual in like; cases was taken, and in & few minutes a line had been successfully shot over the vessel- In a short time the "breeches buoy' was sent out on its mission of rescue, and soon one of the crew of the iU fated vessel was safely landed. Captain Dow. and a crew of five men. The schooner was bound - from Clarke's Cove to W ilmington, N. C, with a cargo of guano. Captain Dow said that the thick weather which prevailed made it impossible to get any bearings, and that the rapid eur rent carried him. out of his course. The vessel struck at 7 P. M. during the prevalence of a heavy sea and a high northeast wind, which, with the thick weather rendered the rescue of the crew a difficult as well as a dan gerous matter. The vessel and car- S are a tal loss- HOLDING THE FORT. Col. Foulk Fortifies Himself and Defies the Sheriff. Pittsburg, Pa., January 26. Col. W. L. Foulk and his son, who have for the last few days, held possession of the premises of VV. L. Foulk, Sons j x Co., advertising agency, on Fifth avenue, against two of his sons who j claim that their father has no interest . i in the concern, were at noon to dav! surrendered by their bondsmen. The Sheriff at once proceeded to place them under arrest, but was denied ad mittance by Col. Foulk. The Sheriff then retired for the purpose of pro curing deputies, to force an entrance. The Colonel and the men in the build- ing with him, are fortified with several revolvers and are very determined and if the Sheriff attempts to take forcible possession it is predicted thero will be serious trouble. THE CHINESE MUST GO. . The Excitement in California Again Gaining Headway, ; San Francisco, January 2G. The recent murder of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse O. Wickersham, near Cloverdale, Senoma county, by their Chinese cWk, has again thoroughly aroused the anti-Chinese sentiment through out the Pacific coast. As soon as the facts of the murder were confirmed, the anti Chinese organizations were affected in many of the most import ant towns in the State, and resolu tions to boycott the Chinese were adopted, and other measures devised for getting rid of them.
