STATK 5EWS. The Week's, Gleanings from Out . Exchanges ;.;4-l i j. Items of Interest the State Over. Charlotte Observer: The Charlotte nera House seats 1.000 people.- irh dath on the farm of Dr. Ed Cald well, near tlald well's Station, on 4. T. & O. road; on Monday last. the j Fayetteville News:, Mr. Henry Lilly s estate, according to -the records on file, shows actual collections to the amount of $128,000, and there is more to come yet that is good. All will be glad to know that the estate of such a noble man is tuining out so well. Lincoln Press: Our friend, Mr. J. W. McLeod, writes us from Crouse's under date of January 27, thaton that day Mrs. Sallie Weaver celebrated her one hundreth birthday. Mr. McLeod also writes us that Mrs. Weaver has a sister, Mrs. Toutherow aged 98 years, and a brother, Joseph Plonk, aged 96. Wilmington Review: Train No. 40, which is the fast mail train, made an ayerage running time last Sunday night from Richmofid to this city of forty-six and three-quarter miles per hour for the entire distance. Mr. W, S. Taylor was the engineer. This we believe, i the fastest time over this line that has ever been made. Fayetteville News: The Durham Reporter with which Mr. H. I. Mc Duffie has been', connected as editor and proprietor, has passed into the hands of a; syndicate composed j of the If ading business men of the pro gressive town of Durham. Mr. Mc Duffie having resigned the position to return to Fayetteville, Col. W. S. Pearson, of Morganton, N. C. has befen elected editor of the paper. New Bern Journal: The newspa pers in North Carolina are now pay ing their respects to one W. H. Page, who has won the title, "The Great Original." Kinston dots; We saw the largest turnip of the season yester day, raised by W. O. Pelletier near here. It measured 31 inches in cir cumference and weitrhed 11 pounds. - We reerret to learn that hos chol era is raging seriously in some por tions of our county. Ashville Advance: There is no defi nite informationfayetbeen received as j to when trains will begin running be L tween Asheville and Henderson ville. I The road has been completed for sev ! eral weeks, but the old reliable hack I 'line is the means of transportation in ! that direction. It has been announced, j unofficially, that a regular schedule will not be in operation between the two points mentioned before the first I or middle of April. Tarboro Southerner: The town com I missioners mean, if possible, to put a I stop to incerdiansm. In another column will be found an advertisement offering $100 reward for the convictic n or nre Dugs' it these tires do not cease, Judge Lynch may hold court here. Mr. Walter H. Page, since he proved an utter failure as a North Carolina journalist, nas spoKen ver er contemptuously of the State press. No one is troubled but Pasre. and his dis ease is'sour grapes. I The new Battery Porter Hotel at Ashville, is now being rapidly con structed. The Advance says: The building which June 1st, is to will be completed bv be four stories high above the ground, with a tower story nigner tnan tne otner parts or the structure. The house will contain 139 sleeping rooms, and in all about 1C0 rooms, with 300 windows, T. shape. The dining room will be 100 feet long, and the building will show 200 feet front from either side. Charlotte Democrat: A yoting man named Page (who considers himself a i 1 ... ,, , -trainea -journalist witnout eyer having learned the printing business or any other business) tried tojab- hsh a newspaper in this Statbut failed, and then went North to engage in writing letters misrepresenting and ucmcvmiis nunu vcnuima XiUltors andour public men generally. "Train ed journalists" like Mr. Page have yet much to learn in the way of com mon sense if not in journalism. Norfolk Virginian: Col. A. J. Har rell, of the firm of Harrell Brothers, died at the Purcell House - yesterday afternoon at 1.30 of pneumonia. Col. Harrell has been sick only about a week, and his death was a sudden shock to all who kuew him. The de ceased was a native of North Caro lina, but for many years had conduct- u iub cuuuu commission ousiness in this city. Col. Harrell leaves a widow and a number of relatives to mourn their loss. He was highly respected by all who knew him. The Wilson Advance has the follow ing relative to the Toisnot fire: Sat urday evening at one o'clock, fire was discovered ri the barber shop of GMW. Gaston the building formerly used as the office 6f the Sunny Home which was quickly! consumed as was the warehouse of Jl D. Wells and the store of E. H. Vick. The loss is es timated at between five and seven thousand dollars.' of which Mr. J. D. Wells is thegreatfcst loser. He had fifty tons of Kainit destroyed in his warehouse, and the building in which the fire broke outA was also his. Mr!. Vick's entire stock was saved, though of course, much damaged. The goods of J. D. Wells- were moved out and damaged thereby, and he lost a lot of plow stock. Mrs. Doles lost some by damage in moving her stock of-millii-nery. The fire "originated from a defective flue. The store of Mr. J. TX Y ells was very near the buildincand was in great danger. Wilmington Star: The -electric light will soon, be in working order? It isthe intention, we understand, to put eignt or ten lights along Front, ZatZJ . 1 iioard ot Audit and i? inances yester day ratified the contract made by the Fire Committee with the Gamewell Fire Alarm Comoanv. which notion insures J to our city the eamewell system ion and after April 1st. NOW FOR A DUEL. , 1 One Ex-Confeclerate Officer Calls Another a Liar. Richmond, February 9. For some time past Gen. Thomas L. Rosser and Col. T. T! Munford, both ex-confederate officers, have been . engaged in a newspaper discussion in reference to the part they took in certain i opera tions during the war. The discussion has waxed warmer and waririer and this evening the following was sent here by Gen. Rosser for publication: Colonel T. T. Munford, Oakland Planta iionf Uniontown. Ala: Colonel I expected, and I believe I had a right to expect, a different reply from yori from the one contain ed in The titeoi the 6th instant over your signature. I do not feel that my reputation requires vindication from your feeble assaults, but I can not repress my indignation at your deliberate falshood, when I know that malice and a deep desire to injure me are only incentives. You deliberate ly, willfully and basely state an un truth and mark it with quotation marks as the language of General Early. This is baseness which I believe no gentleman could be guilty of, and, holding this opinion of you, I cannot take further notice of you through the press. rSiernedl Thomas L. Rosser. Rugby, Albemarle county, Va. THE ELECTION IN NOVEM BER. Next November, elections are to be held in this State for Congressmen, SupFeme Court Judges, six Superior Court Judges, Solicitors, members of the Legislature and Sheriff.; The Charlotte Democrat makes the following appropriate and wise suggestion which we hope to see acted upon : We suggest to our friend, R. H. Battle; Esq., the chairman of the State Democratic Executive Commit tee, that he begin to think about or ganizing and preparing for the con test. A letter from a. prominent gen tleman repeats the truthful saying that "a house divided against itself cannot stand," and sucre'ested that it - is about time to unite and close uo the - " - - Democratic ranks and prepare to face a common enemy. It is right to point out defects in Democratic manage ment as well as Republican manage ment,' but when If comes to a choice of rulers and officers, we do not hesi tate to say, let us all stand bv the srood old Democratic party and its honest representatives. Mr. Battle knows how to begin operations for another successful campaign, and we only mean to suggest an early start. sv FLOOD IN BALTIMORE. water Four Feet Deep in Harri son Street. One leak on nearly every farm may be found in the neglect of the agri cultural implements. In traveling oyer the country, it is no unusual sight to see plows, harrows, wagons, sleds, reapers, and mowers, etc., piled in the fence corners, in tho ApM i i , ' , : : lanes, Darnyards and Dublic hie'h- ways. Whenever - . f you see things piled around in this wav. von o it down that there is at least one leak on that farm. An excuse might be found for some farmers, of limited means, that they are not able to build Stielter tor thfiir mn omonfc TWO x . - nna tne same leak on farms where they count their acres by the hun dreds and the dollars by the thou sand. And or course the larger the farm, the greater the leak.
