Kirta tn it history as that of Spain, The Prince de Dourbon who, in 1870, was delibe rately snot through the head in an alleged duel by his cousin, the Duke de JUontpensier, Don Enrioue was one of a large family of brothers whose histories are somewhat extraordinary. The eldest sister, Princess Isabella, eloped with a Polish nobleman, Count LrurowsKi, wno, although poor, is ex tremely popular at Paris. Theii marriage, to which the subsequent consent ot the Crown was obtained. aia not turn out to be a happy one ner extravagances, both as regards money and morals, were bevond all description, and after the biith of a daughter a seperation was arrane-ed. Ihe Princess is a kind of mad woman. wnom i nave irequently met on foot in the streets of Madrid, disgracefully dressed, looking for all the world like a disreputable old clothes merchant. All who was a charming and lovely girl died a short time ago in the utmost poverty at a little farm not tar trom the capital." Thanks to her mothers insane extravagance, and notwithstanding the liberality of the late King, the bed on which she ex pired constituted the sole furniture of the place. Another of the sisters is Princess Josefa, who contracted a most roman tic marriage with the Cuban poet and statesman, Guelley Kente. The lat ter, who died about three months ago, was favorably known in the United States as having been a great partisan in ravor of the C ortes abolishing al duties on American corn in fact, he was a kind of Spanish Cobden. When quite a young man he became attach ed to a young lady belonging to one of the principal families of Cuba. His love was returned, but the rather re fused to encourage the suit and con temptuouslv told him that he was of tar too low origin ever to dream of marrying his daughter. Enrage! Guelley Rente exclaimed that he would show people who ho was by wedding a Princess. Crossing the occean, he arrived at iviaana, and soon made a name tor himself there as poet and author, beveral poems which he dedicated to rnncess Joseta sufficed to turn her head completely They became enamored of one another and fled together. The scandal was rendered doubly great by the tact ot Guelly Rente being a most pronounced Radical. Ihe (rovernment tried unsuccessfully to get the marriage invalidated by the Pope, but the peo ple were delighted therewith. Sen tences et exile were pronounced against them, but after a while the good nature tor which .ueen Isabella is notorious prevailed, and the couple returned fo Spain with honor, the Queen receiving the popular poet as her brother-in-law. He was a most charminsr man and a distinguished author, while his speeches in the Senate and the Cortes are or histori cal interest. The Ropal family at no time had reason to regret the marriage, and his three sons are, perhaps, the most popular, and certainly the most accomplishedyoung men in Madrid. One of Princess Josera s brothers is the ex-King I rancis of Assisi, hus band of Queen Isabella, who a few days ago, at the marriage of his daughter, Princess Eulalie, found himself standing next to the man wno had murdered his brother in cold blood. Don Francis-is a little bit of a man, almost a dwarf with a squeaky voice and a spiteful character. Need less to refer to the shameful history wife, Donna! Mercedes, was very ovely, and he! was almost heart-broken when she died. Reasons of State alone induced Alfonso to contract a second marriage with Queen Christina, wno comes from the very plainest branch as the Hapsburgs, a family by no means lemarkable for its comeli ness. Although treated with the greatest courtesy by her husbaud she was frequently made to feel this, and at one time his behaviour was such that she withdrew with her two little daughters to Austria, when she could only with difficulty be persuaded to return. Ihe berson most to blame for the King's unfortunate legerate was he Duke de besto, stepfather of the present Duke i of Moray. Handsome Pepe Sesto, who, in 1850, was one of tjie most favored suitors for the hand of Eugenie of Teba. subsequently Empress of the French, occupied the post of Lord High Chamberlain and became the King's inseparable com panion. Although close upon sixty years of of age he did not deem it be neath his dignity to act the part of Cupid m the King s love affair.-, and, if the current gossip at Madrid is to be believed, he on one occasion felt all the weight of Queen Christina's hand on his cheek whiist attempting to prevent her; entering a certain little pavilion not a hundred miles from Madrid, at the). door of which he was Miscellaneous. The people do not like her, fpr although her conduct both as Queen and mother is blame less, she retains too much of the nature of an Austrian archduchess to be popular in thej country. In fact her child would stand a far better chance of eventually reigning if she were to make over theregency to the Princess Isabella of Ofrgentt, eldest sister of the late King, (and without exception the most witty, clever and popular woman in Spam. She also is a widow, her husband, a younger brother of the Ex-King of Naples, having committed suicide a few years ago. As to the his tory of her mother, Ex-(fcieen Isabella, the subject is rather a delicate oue with which to deal. Future genera tions will probably judge her with more charity than do her contempora ries. Lett it suffice if I merely men tion that she .jis remarkable for her philanthrophyi and that, like many women, she Lap more heart than head. Before concluding, I might add that another member of the Bourbon fami ly. Prince Pascal, brother of the Ex- King of Naple$ and brother in-law of the Lmpress of Austria, appeajpd a few weeks ago in the prisoners' dock of a police Court at Paris on the charge ot swindling tradespeople. He was accused of having purchased about $20,000 worthf of wine, giving three months' bills and a mortgage on his villa at Pau for the amount. In due time the bill$ were dishonored, the mortgage was discovered to be fraud ulent, since the villa was already hy pothecated to its full amount, and finally it turned out that his Royal Highness had1 sold the wine within two days ot its purchase tor cash to some merchants at St. Denis. Owing to some technical Haw in the indict ment, the Prince was acquitted as far as the criminal charge was concerned, but was condemned to pay the costs. U Over Half a Million Distributed.
