Dr. Yon Bremen, of New York, is a very good wing shot. Recently, in anti--ipation of a fall's shooting, he bought a promising j ointer pup, which lie began training. The doctor never makes hir.:..; if a present without re membering Mrs. Von Bremen. When he bought the pup for himself lie bought a parrot for his wife. With noiseless steps he approached within a few yards of the cage, and then jcame rigid in a beautiful pointing attitude. The parrot watched him intently for a moment, and then sang out loud and clear: "Ah there!"' The effect on tho dog was paralyzing. Il ceased pointing, dropped to a sitting peeture, and gave way to his bewilderment, "Stay there," came in gruff and command ing tones from the parrot's cage. The pup had been severely trained, and he feared to disobey. His head dropped between his forelegs, and k a attitude of utter dejec tion he awaited further commands. The doc tor had been looking on from the hallway, and when he entered the room the parrot was reviling the pup in a mixture of English and hpaiiii:h, ail the pup was groveling in the rug, but afraid to run away. Scientists have sought the cause of the remarkable warmth in arctic regions, but have left untouched other questions of equal and perhaps great importance. One can hardly contemplate the climatic conditions of that remote period without inquiring how there could be other" than a great difference of temper ature between the summers and winters of lands less than 8 deg. from the pole; and how could circumstances environ mentsso unlike as the four or five months of day of those regions, and the Jwelve-hour day of the tropics, fail to induce great specific differences in their fauna or flora. The questions sponta neously arise: Is it possible that the days and nights in high latitudes were then as they are now? Must not the climate have been warm in January as well as in July? Must not tho influ ences of the solar rays tho actinic force have been distributed through the year with at leat approximate uni formity in high as well as low latitudes? T C K . ... .!.. . 1 1 . 1 AW 13 IUKSC IJUCMIUUS, a Weil 3S IHOSO OI temperature, that I shall consider in this paper. 1 propose to study the record left by the plants ami animals which lived in those remote days. Some of their more obvious teachings are startling enough. Regions where now vegetation is of the scantiest character, where no trees exist save a few' dwarf willows, where the winters are cold al most beyond endurance, were, as late as the Miocene, covered with magnifi cent forests of magnolias, oaks, c--presses, and a hundred other, species. In more remote periods they abounded in plants and animals, whose fellows of identical species lived at the same time, or at least in the same geological period, near the equator. I'rofessor C. B.
